EDDK - grey snow ?

Hi all,

just a little question. I am getting grey snow at EDDK (newest version for P3Dv4.5, but as far as I remember it was like this also with the old version) . The snow piles however are white. Is that intended or is it only on my side? Looks a bit strange to me..

thanks and best regards

Yes, please get rid of PTA. This tools made sense with FSX, but they are getting more and more obsolete, when devs use the latest technologies provided with The P3D SDK. They are causing more troubles then inmproving anything. Without PTA (or any other shader tool) EDDK looks like this.

And AFAIK with the upcoming MSFS they will be completely dead.

yes indeed, I use some PTA shaders. So you can confirm that snow should look white with original P3D shaders? Issue on my side then..

No I cannot confirm that because it depends on the shader. But they ALWAYS change the colors the artist intended for the scenery to something the shader designer preferred. So your choice is simple, see it as Lockheed and thee scenery designer intended it to be or as somebody else who rather clearly never seen snow intends it to be.

People should feel free to use 3rd party shaders. What they should not expect is that things will look as we intend it.

Thank you. That is what I wanted to know.

And NO NO, I wont get rid of PTA haha  :)))

Absolutely needed still for some areas. I actually prefer to have grey snow at EDDK over having all the other annoying "issues" when using original shaders. ( I mean I also could just adjust the shader responsable for this. But I think I am too lazy to do that)

but I know, a highly personal thing, so no further discussion needed

I do NOT expect that and I would never complain about it !! Justed wanted to confirm it IS my shaders. Nothing else :))

kind regards

Hi all,

just wanted to share an interesting finding for all 3rd party shader users  (and for 3rd party shader haters also :)))) )

The grey snow is not a shader issue. I get the same grey snow with original P3D V4.5 shaders, but I also get it at any other airport.

What causes this  (at least for me) is the cloud shadows turned on, in the case of EDDK the shadows aparently dont apply to the snow piles besides the taxiway however, therefore they look white whilst everything else looks grey.

These screenshots are made with restored org shaders and shadow off and on

Best regards and Merry Christmas to everbody !!

You really have no idea what you are talking about and you are also incorrect.

Suniram is right...

Mopperle is indeed correct and his comments are directly factual.

Please bare in mind that our moderators are also tech support specialists and they are hand picked and heavily screened for their level of knowledge and experience, which they also continue to maintain over a wide range of flight sim topics and products. They also spend a great deal of time researching and testing, as well as sharing knowledge and debating issues behind the scenes on things that most people don't see. Moreover, they are in direct touch with flight sim developers here at Aerosoft and elsewhere, which serves to bolster their knowledge.  Now, they are also human and certainly make mistakes (especially with the number of variables to contend with in our hobby), but generally speaking they don't offer advice unless they are sure about what they recommend.

Our staff are also open minded, and you are certainly welcome to share your opinion so long as your provide insight, evidence or facts.  But to jump in just to say " you're wrong", well, that doesn't do anyone any good at all.  I'll also say that if you're going to challenge what Mopperle said,  you've going loose that debate hands down and many times over.  He's absolutely, 100% correct in what he said (though he also left out a lot of other reasons why we don't recommend third party shaders).

It's your system and of course you can continue to use third party shaders if you wish (though I recommend you read some excellent threads over at AVSIM from people who have stopped using them).  But please, let's not jump in and tell our staff here that they're wrong in a hit and run fashion.  Respectful debate is fine, not the other.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year.

You might take a look at the PTA forum at Avsim and see that I am the moderator there and I also create many PTA presets ( Gerard’s All Months Preset set .. ) that have been downloaded thousands of times....

So therefore I think I know a little or two about Shaders ...

Several times I helped Matt to solve issues after again a P3Dv4 update ...

Everyone is allowed to express his opinion but if it is incorrect and also pulling down a product, then imho it might be said so.

Shader tweaking can really make your flightsim environment look much more realistic. There are some people who have made several very nice presets. As P3Dv4 progressed over time LM also improved and modified the Shaders ; sky, clouds , lighting & shadows. Expressions have been changed or replaced by new ones.   So with each update every preset has to be modified too. Using a Shader preset from a year ago might make P3Dv4 look weird.

Simply stating that these tools are causing troubles is not true. If people do not understand enough what each tweak does or use old presets than indeed the image will look not realistic.

Happy New Year for the AS team and their users .

If you enjoy PTA that's fine.  But we not only strongly advise against using ANY third party shaders (other than EVNShade) with our products, and when users report certain problems we will demand they remove third party shaders before we provide further assistance. We have our reasons backed by experience, knowledge and countless tech support cases. As Mopperle said in his post, more and more products will become like this, in fact it's already happening.  But feel free to do what you wish with your sim... that's one of the great things about our hobby, do what YOU want.  But not using third party shaders, which is coming from the people who code our software and create our graphics, will continue to be our advice to our customers.

I hope you will respect that this will have to be the final post on this subject.

My very best wishes to you.
