Runway Repairs - Ils Runway 27 Prohibited!

Ladies and Gentlemen

Monday last, August 16.th, at 21.11 local time, an Airbus A300 scheduled from Munich to Rome, made an unannounced landing at runway 27 of Andras Field airport. The landing, if it can be called a landing - a stall was more like it, hence a vertical drop, causing the Airbus´landing gear to break, and the left wing to be completely clipped off was executed without any radio communication with Andras Field Tower

The plane was a cargo version, carrying only the two pilots and three flight attendants. By a miracle noone was seriously injured, but the "dropsite" the start of runway 27 was severely damaged, as you probably know already by now. Andras Fields medical team was op to the challenge, until a Munich rescue helicopter was at Andras Field less than ½ hour after, taking the crew to hospital to be checked.

A German investigation team landed by helicopter only 1 hour and 45 minutes after the "landing", and have started an investigation of why the plane landed unannounced, and with way to low speed. No details have been let out yet, but a source close to the investigation have told me that the pilots claim to have had electrical problems causing the plane to lose power, and causing radios to fail. More on this subject when we get the info.

But runway 27 is in a condition that is too dangerous to be left alone, and therefore runway repairs have now started.

As a result, the east end of the runway is CLOSED, and will remain so for about 10 days, while the runway is being brought up to standard again. The rest of the runway is undergoing investigations to see how severe the damage is, and what is needed to be done here.

So ILS runway27 landings are prohibited for the duration of the repairs.

Visual landings can still be performed at rwy 27, as long as you make a runway overflight to gain a visual of the situation. Extreme caution is to be executed at all times

Everybody, please check your life vests. Not only will you be landing with the wind direction instead of into it, you'll be flying over the lake. I hear that lake is the home of our very own lock ness monster named Andras, the airplane eater. :D

Hi Ole,

Can you confirm that visual approaches to 27 are still authorised - is it only the ILS approach which is affected or all approaches to 27?

Regards,

Sim.

I can confirm that Simjockey. Visual approaches to 27 are still open, but overflying of the runway, using standard pattern, to gain a visual of the situation, is mandatory!
