  1. I agree and in fact, there is a 3rd party software which allows you to assign a specific controller and controller profile to an aircraft! After you set the controller/s and the profile for an aircraft, every time you select that specific aircraft, (regardless of the livery), the controller and intended profile are automatically applied to it when it opens in MSFS.

So, in my case, I have the Honeycomb Yoke & Throttle system and the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS Stick & throttle system. I also have the Crosswinds Rudder Pedals as well as the Saitek/Logitech Switchbox & Multi-panel and 2 Thrustmaster MFD panels. If I wanted to fly a twin engine, turbo-prop aircraft, (like, say the twin Otter, which is a Yoke-controlled plane), my controllers would include the Honeycomb controllers and the Crosswinds Rudder pedals.

I may also want to apply one, or both of the Thrusmaster MFD panels for additional controller buttons but whatever I decide, I would have the profile specifically set for that Twin Otter Turbo-prop. My controller levers would be set for Throttles, Props & Condition operations and there would be buttons assigned to water-rudder controls and if it's amphibious version, landing gear, (just to mention a few examples).

These settings are all created in the 3rd party's profiling software and would automatically load when the plane was selected and opened in MSFS. Now here's the bad news; I don't remember the name of that 3rd party software!!! I think I saw it in my Orbx website store and it MAY BE "SoFly", (but remember, I'm not sure about that!).

The reason I don't have it yet is because the software also does many other things regarding the organization of the planes, missions, flight-paths arrangements, etc., etc. I found myself becoming overwhelmed by all the options and at the time, (about 7 or 8 months ago), it seemed like each option had some sort of limitation or disclaimer.

In other words it appeared to try and do too much. It just seemed like I would've been spending days just trying to get the aircraft placed in the proper categories and of course, I'd have to take the time to recreate profiles for each aircraft. That's because the software didn't have the ability for the user to copy already-made custom profiles from the MSFS profiler to the new 3rd party software.

I have numerous profiles but I set them up and named them based on the kind of aircraft the profile is meant to be applied to. I have Fixed-wing and Helicopter categories. Single and multi-engine profiles, which are applied to Turbo-Prop, Gas-engine, Jet-engine and "Other-power Source". In each category, is a kind of sub-category to address Amphibious-Gear, Tundra-gear, Floats, Ski's, etc.

It did take time for me to iron-out the profiles but eventually, I wound up with about 6 or 7 'main profiles'. It seems to work well, but that's just me.

    FWIW,

    Rich

  2. It's been a while now since I've gotten the hang of creating Controller profiles for various needs and for some specific aircraft. In the process, I came to find where MSFS stores my controller profiles, which can be VERY important to know as a precautionary measure.

Here's a little tip that can pay off big if you eve have a catastrophic system crash and have to reinstall MSFS from scratch: Even if you installed MSFS in a custom location as I have, (I have it installed on a dedicated NVMe SATA drive; Drive "A"). [Please keep in mind that I have the MSFS Premium Store-bought version for PC and I don't know if this tip would work for the Steam edition or for Xbox.]

I have a yoke and throttle system, (Honeycomb Alpha & Beta), a Stick and Throttle System, (Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS), a Crosswinds Rudder Pedal system, as well as a Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Airbus additions, Thrustmaster Cougar MFD Panels, Two Saitek Throttle Quads, Saitek Yoke & Rudder Pedals, and Saitek Switchbox and Multi-panel.

Yes, everyone one of those controllers are employed at some specific time and saved in the MSFS Controller Profiler. Some profiles are for a specific aircraft ONLY, such as the control of the MSFS Pelican, (specific functions for vertical operations and then you need to activate a switch for horizontal flight. Then there's the need to use "Slew Mode" for space flight, etc., etc.)

There are the controllers and commands for Rotorcraft, Fixed-Wing, Gliders, and more. I name my various profiles to indicate that the profile is configured for Jet Engine, Turbo-Prop, or Gas-engine craft. That way, I can have control of Condition levers and Reversers or Fuel Mix levers, Slats, etc.. There are too many differences to list but that is exactly my point!

It occurred to me that all it would take was for some SNAFU to cause me to have to either "RESET" MSFS, or do a complete reinstallation, (and I came close to that just a few days ago!).

For me, that would be catastrophic! It took hours to workout some of those profiles. In addition, I am still 'tweaking' various things in my controller profiles, (recently, I made changes in the sensitivity, of the Yoke and Pedals, for example).

Plus, as I purchase new aircraft I may find a need to make some various changes in the button presses for a new included command. All this adds up to a lot of work and time if I ever had to do it all over.

So, I have a calendar scheduled to open a reminder once every month. It reminds me to backup my MSFS controller folder, which is the "WGS" folder. Regardless of whether you used the Default location when you installed MSFS or a custom location, the WGS folder will always be located here:

    C:\Users\richp\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData

If you installed your Windows O/S in the default drive, then the drive is "C". The point is that you would go to the drive that contains your Operating System and in most cases, that's drive "C".

The size of the data in that folder is surprisingly small. I save the backup in an external drive, separate from the 8 internally mounted drives that I have.

I also backup the Cameras.cfg, FlightSimulator.cfg, and UserCfg.opt files located here:

    C:\Users\richp\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

Please keep in mind that you must be able to take Full Control permission of the LocalCache folder in order to be allowed to copy and paste these files. That also may be true for the controller folder "WGS".

    Hopefully this will help someone!

  3. As I had suspected, this information is extremely helpful, SimWare!! In fact, all the information I got from you, (including the article "Hardware/Software compatibility..." was just what I needed to know. Because I'm familiar with, Thrustmaster Warthog's TARGET profiler software, I fully understand and appreciate your article's message.

For the Honeycomb Controls, (which I'm worrking with first), my plan, is to follow the steps you covered, but with one little twist.

I plan to open the Preset Manager as you instruct, but I'm going to first create a "Custom-Default" profile name like "Single Engine Yoke-Props". I'll save that and then I'll repeat the steps to create another "Custom-Default" profile name like "Twin-Engine Yoke-Props", and then again, for "Multi-Engine Yoke-Airliners", and so on.

These "Custom-Default" Profiles will have a limited number of actions saved for operation of the control surfaces, throttle quadrant configuration, and perhaps some other, common, and typically applied operations, ("Gear", Batt/Mags 1&2/Starter/fuel, etc.). Of course, the custom profile name will indicate whether it's for single or multi-engine prop planes that use a Yoke control.

Anyway, I would then open my "Custom Default profile that I wish to apply to say, a single engine Cessna. I would then name that profile to the specific plane I chose, as you instructed, and go on with setting the switches and operations as needed for that plane.

All the custom-default profile does, is make it a little faster to create the user-specific, target-aircraft profile, by already having the yoke and throttle, as well as gear and some other basic control assignments, completed. (If you follow what I mean).

Later, when I connect my Thrustmaster Warthog controls, I'll create similar "Custom Default" profiles that will have the indicator word "Stick" in the name. I won't be dealing with the Thrustmaster and TARGET settings for at least a week or more but I sense that the TM TARGET software will make short work of the basic job, and then I can 'dial it in' as needed for each plane or helicopter that I want.

There are some people who have created .tmc and .fcf files with the TARGET software and are willing to share the file with others, (though, one should always use good judgement & scan the file for viruses before installing). The TARGET file can greatly reduce the time needed for each aircraft, (... I think).

I think a lot of people benefited from your post; "How to create new controller profiles in MSFS". It's been the most important guide I've read and/or watched, (YouTube videos), in the past 2 weeks.

  4. Thanks again Simware! Yes, the additional info will be very important to me in more ways than one. In fact, when I flew FSX, (9+years), eventually, I bought the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS. I 've had it for about the last 3 or 4 years of my FSX flights. I found the TARGET software to be very helpful and I created profiles for the TM controller that included all the sensitivity, profile curves and dead-zone options.

Now I see that FS 2020 also offers a similar group of options. I haven't yet tried the Thrustmaster system and I won't for at least another week. I'm going to start with the Honeycomb and then later, I'll go to the Thrustmaster.

When the time comes for me to setup my TM controllers, I should have a pretty good understanding of the FS control system settings by then. At this point, I have the TM TARGET software installed but I may find it better to use the FS control settings rather than the TARGET.

But that concern is for another day. Right now, I'm focused on the Honeycomb controls and I just finished copying the guide that you posted "How to create new controller profiles in MSFS".

I'm also going to read this recent information "Hardware / Software compatibility: What does it REALLY mean?" that you were nice enough to post. I anxious as I am to get to the FS sim and actually fly sometime soon, (like today), I don't want to be in such a rush that I wind up spending the time trying to figure out what's going on. So, I'm going to take the time to read these additional guides so that I know what to expect when I startup FS.

  5. Thank You to all!! Very valuable info, SimWare! For as much research that I've been doing in the past week, I'm surprised that I didn't find a reference to the "How to create new controller profiles in MSFS" in the various browser options that came up as I would search. I may have simply overlooked it.

At any rate, that article is extremely important to me and I plan to print it out so I can use it as a guide while FS is open! Please consider my topic answered.

I'm planning to get this going by late this afternoon.

  6. Hi folks,

I have the Honeycomb Alpha & Bravo system and a Crosswinds Rudder pedals setup. I also have the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, but for now, I'm wondering if there is a good 'starter', or 'entry-level' configuration file available for the Honeycomb system (for FS 2020), that can be downloaded and dropped into the 'required folder' for the sim.

Basically, a configuration that would be applicable for single or twin-engine GA aircraft and work well enough to get a basic foundation arrangement. Then the user can go in and make the changes from that point. Does anyone know of such a file or possibly someone who wouldn't mind uploading their configuration for me to download?

    I have Windows 10 Pro 64bit and a custom-built desktop.

    Thank you,

    Rich

  7. I doubt that they will even do that. For Microsoft Flight was a very tiny project. Most of the managers won't care about it.They gave the whole project less than six months to prove itself. For a real tryout this period is too small, so it looks more like the shortest grace period to kill the project.

I agree, I think big biz is to a point that if the profit margin doesn't hit a 500% minimum, why bother? I don't know... Big biz is out of my league but I know that Flight Simulation programs are a multi- billion dollar endeavor. I also know that MSFSX is still at the top of the pile when it comes to all the great advanced, additional scenery, aircraft, missions, etc. but Prepar3D is beginning to see some real quality companies making 'versions' for them and that's got them on FSX's heals. Companies like Aerosoft, Orbx, FTX, GEX, REX, and UTX to name just a few.

I have at least a thousand dollars sunk into my FSX addons, (I'm afraid to get an accurate count because it's very likely to be twice that), and I haven't tried Prepar3D yet. I can safely say that I won't be moving over to P3D anytime soon. I just can't afford to re-buy another collection of add-on programs to fit P3D. Then again, I think I may have seen a few add-ons that can convert at no cost to the buyer of the FSX version.

If they all start doing that, I may reconsider but for now, I can't complain much about the FSX program. It's poorly coded and has no direct support but then, the cost of a Sandybridge mobo and an i7 2600k is rapidly dropping and coming into my reach in another month or so. As for the direct support well, I found that I needed direct support from the add-on manufacturers on occasion but not really from the main program, FSX.

Direct support to P3D may be of some value to someone just starting out but I don't think that most veteran simmers really need it. I could be wrong but it's still not the strongest argument for changing over. In the end, it's all good.

  8. Hi folks,

Apparently they just found an "under ice canyon" larger than the Grand Canyon in Antarctica. If the mile of ice that covers the canyon up should ever collapse, I hope Aerosoft is prepared to make the necessary changes :-)

What wonders lie beneath? Radar equipment is driven across Antarctic ice during field work that revealed a massive rift.

By Andrea Mustain, OurAmazingPlanet Staff Writer:

A dramatic gash in the surface of the Earth that could rival the majesty of the Grand Canyon has been discovered secreted beneath Antarctica's vast, featureless ice sheet.

Dubbed the Ferrigno Rift for the glacier that fills it, the chasm's steep walls plunge nearly a mile down (1.5 kilometers) at its deepest. It is roughly 6 miles (10 km) across and at least 62 miles (100 km) long, possibly far longer if it extends into the sea.

The rift was discovered during a grueling 1,500-mile (2,400 km) trek that, save for a few modern conveniences, hearkens back to the days of early Antarctic exploration. And it came as a total surprise, according to the man who first sensed that something incredible was literally underfoot, hidden by more than a half-mile (1 km) of ice.

  9. Incredible! I mean, what were they thinking? Were they not paying attention at all to any of the present flight Sim community that uses FSX? For years people have been speaking about how poorly coded FSX was and how much more they would enjoy it if the game wasn't so demanding on the computer's resources.

When MS Flight came out I swear I thought that it was just a small ' quickie' to hold the arcade community while they worked on the serious simulator. I don't know who's running the show over there but they were obviously oblivious to what's going on in this huge field. Some heads should roll because of this if there is any management in that department.

I mean they had to lose some money on this endeavor because I know they've been advertising MS Flight for at least a year before it came out. And now, less than a year after it comes out, it goes out the window. That had to be costly to some extent.

  10. Thank You Sasha!

    Yes, you were correct.

It just so happens that I purchased Dangerous Airports 1 yesterday, (or the day before), and when I went through the install procedure, I got to the Launcher operation and I got an alert that I didn't have the latest Launcher in place. So I installed the latest Launcher per the instructions given, and then I went into the "activation" section.

It was there that I noticed that the Antarctica X had a red notice saying that I wasn't activated. I also have Lukla X, Gibralter X, and others but they WERE activated. So, I was surprised to see that Antarctica X wasn't because I thought I had activated it when I installed it over a month ago.

Anyway, long story short, I activated Antarctica X but did not go there to fly until last night. Now it seems that I can stop at will!! So everything is fine!

    Thank You for the help!

    Rich

  11. Thank You for the quick reply Sascha!

I haven't been in the Antarctica X program for at least 3 or 4 weeks, (the sliding started getting frustrating), so I've forgotten the exact details but I will recheck some of the locations. But I know for sure that one of them was the McMurdo station where there's a lot of buildings, (relatively speaking), and at least one, if not two, snow-blowers operating.

I landed an F-14 and I also tried an F-18 and couldn't stop either. In addition, I remember being unable to keep a C17 from sliding down a runway that was at an incline, (one of those remote ones I mentioned). Also, I remember that I was barely able to keep a Pavlow Helicopter from rolling after I landed near the Penguins, (that neat little freeware add-on).

But if I understand you, I should be able to stop as easily as I would in any relatively clear airport on dry land, is that what you're saying?

Because if so, then I'm doing something wrong with the settings. I'm going to have to revisit the manual and try again using the FSX settings set to exactly what is shown. Though I thought that I did do that, it's very possible that I didn't when I went there the second or third time I opened Antarctica X. I may have left the settings in my typical positions which are usually set all to full right.(I'm speaking about the "Scenery" settings).

Anyway, if you can confirm that I understood you correctly regarding the ability to stop a plane relative to any other 'non-Antarctica X' airstrip, I'll go back and check all that information and see what I'm doing wrong here.

I appreciate the reply and I'll check on all that tonight and report what I found.

    Thanks again!

  12. Hi Folks,

Does anyone know how to adjust the braking power in the Antarctica X program or FSX itself?

(Right now, they just keep going and going)

Since Antarctica X came out, I must have read more material about that add-on than any other I have.

I can't remember if I saw how to do that in a post in the forum, or in the manual, or additional reading material on some other site but I could swear that I read it somewhere.

In addition, I think that it was mentioned 'in passing' and was not the subject of the reading material at the time which makes it that much harder to find.

So does anyone have knowledge on how to increase the braking power? I know that they probably slide around a lot out there but my planes just don't stop for miles after landing unless I cut the engines.

So I'm not interested in keeping that "reality" if it's possible to change.

    Thanks

  13. The manual installation involved is very standart:

You create a folder (like "myantartica") where you want, most people put in the fsx/addon scenery with the other extensions, but you dont have to.

You create two sub folders (texture and scenery). All addon scenery have the same structure

you copy the content of the texture folders from the 2 .zip files in the texture folder you just created (normally all the *.dds files)

you copy the content of the scenery folders from the 2 .zip files in the scenery folder you just created (normally all the *.blg files)

you declare the scenery in the scenery lib above antartica x using the scenery librairy menu inside fsx

you should see the new stuff in the simulator.

    Hope this helps.

    Etienne.

    THANK YOU Very Much Etienne!!

I'm sorry I didn't get back here sooner, (I just got back from an unexpected trip). I trully appreciate the detailed help. I completely understand and plan to try it out tonight.

    Rich

  14. well, the name is in the signature (etien). best you create a new folder like 'my antartica' , copy the content of Marble Point and Mario Zuchelli in it, and then declare it.

    Etienne

I'd be glad to do that etien but perhaps I wasn't clear. I'll use the Marble Point scenery as an example: I downloaded the folder and unzipped it. Then, when I opened that folder to its point where the two Folders titled "Scenery" and "Texture" appeared, I opened each individual folder to find the files inside.

My question is; Where do I put those files specifically? Do I place them in the 'Scenery' and 'Texture' folders in the AntarticaX folder which is located in the Aerosoft folder within FSX's main folder? (ie: Program files (86)>Microsoft Games>MSFSX>Aerosoft>AntarcticaX> Scenery or Texture, what ever the case may be)

Or do I perhaps place those files in the 'Scenery' and 'Texture' folders that are located in the main FSX folder themselves? (ie: Program files (86)>Microsoft Games>MSFSX>Scenery or Texture, what ever the case may be).

That's all I'm asking. The Penguin program had those instructions and they look very good by the way. But I'd like to see these Marble Point and others as well Just as soon as I know where to place those files. There are a lot of them and I don't want to have to find them to delete them if I place them in the wrong folder.

    Thank You

  15. Hi Folks,

I have the Penguin download that instructs where to place the files. But the other two I downloaded don't specify if the Scenery & Texture files go into the "AntarcticaX Scenery & Texture folders or if they go in the main FSX Scenery and Texture Folders. I'm speaking about the Marble Point and one other, (I forgot the name but it's the same programmer).

    Can you please specify?

    Thank You

PS: I don't know if this topic is being watched anymore so If I don't recieve a reply in the next few days, I'll assume it isn't. Therefore, 'Mr. Administrator', you may see this same post in a "New Topic" section. I hope that explains the possibility of a 'double-post'.

  16. Thank You... too bad. I know that in the name of realism there are things that can be done but are not. Sometimes it's nice to have an option for the sim pilot to choose. But I have no idea what it takes to program anything in FSX let alone something that FSX itself didn't have to start with.

I guess the the default FSX terrain has no lighting either. Come to think of it, I don't think the default terrain even has any buildings.

As for the 'Southern Lights' I'm assuming that won't happen because FSX doesn't provide an ability for it either. If it did, many other terrain addons would have done the 'Northern lights' by now.

Thank You. I have to check my user settings for this site because I didn't get a notification that you had answered.

  17. Hi Folks,

I'm about to order the Antartica X Box version and I just wanted to know if there is any night capabilities in the program? You know, for runway and building lights and such if flying at night.

I know it sounds like a strange question but I've spent an hour looking at scenery screen shots from all over the wb and I didn't see any nightime shots.

BTW Is it ever possible to see a patch for the Aurora Australis lights in the future or is that beyond FSX capability?

    Thanks
