  1. With the modified webcam that I have, I still need to work on getting my view not to move around so much while looking at the instrument panel. It's hard to use buttons when the view is moving around so much, it was sunny for parts of the day and really cloudy at other times making it even harder to setup the camera at the same time. Not sure why I haven't thought of this before, but what would happen if I use an old camcorder or camera for a webcam (not sure if this can even be done)?. I may try that later today.

  2. I'd download it myself, since I like to collect gliders for FSX. As far as the canopy goes, I don't know enough about aircraft modeling to help you out there. I've done little work on getting textures to the right transparency, but only for my liking. You could send a kind word to Wolfgang, and see if he would give you a few pointers. I would definitely look into someone doing the flight dynamics though, or at least get it as close as possible. I'm no aircraft editor, so I sure don't know enough about how it all works, but maybe you could see what kind of difference there is between Wolfgang's Discus and Duo Discus to get an idea of what the difference would be between his ASK21 and your ASK23.

Maybe Bert (bruin) and/or B21 could help you out with the flight dynamics, it sure wouldn't hurt to ask. Hope it all works out for you.

  3. The trackIR feature I found most interesting was leaning *forward* so you can see over the control column to dials that otherwise might be obscured - kinda cool.

So how long before you realize you forgot to buckle yourself back into your seat  ?! hehehe

Well, I come back with fairly good news. I think the future really looks promising for this FREEWARE software. I realized later today that my tests have kinda been inconclusive. My webcam had originally been modified for it's use with IR LED's in FreeTrack, making it hard to keep a good setup in FaceTrackNoIR with the changing sunlight outside and the light coming in through the shades. Ideally, with the setup I have at the moment, I would have no light coming in from the outside, and a better light source in the room I'm in. But I think all that will change if I get a new webcam for Christmas, maybe.

As far as a FPS loss, I found little to no difference between FreeTrackv2.2 and FaceTrackNoIR. But like I said, the webcam is an issue with getting conclusive results. One thing that I did find hard to do is press buttons on the dashboard because of the constant movement FaceTrackNoIR, but I think I have to mess around with the settings a bit more to get a reasonable view.

At the bottom is a short video of how well so far I've gotten it to work inside FSX. It shows the lag of head movement to screen movement. Also, how well it resumes after it cuts out (primarily from me moving my head too fast), as well as what happens when objects get put in front of the face (example= my coffee cup).

  4. It now supports FS2002/FS2004/FSX. Also with this release is configurable curves and other small modifications it says.

This is a face recognition type program to mimic head movement in the sim. I'll be back in a few days after I've tried it out for a short review. You can find it at http://facetracknoir...ome/default.htm .

Edit: Title has been corrected to reflect the real name, FaceTrackNoIR instead of FaceTrackNOIR.

  5. On screen capturing, I have been using Debut mostly for quite some time now. But I noticed that it may have changed to payware as of late. For freeware, I'd check VirtualDub also, I think it has screen capturing capabilities too.

  6. Dave, you have an urgent email to reply to, before you make any more changes to the surrounding SOAR Ranch area. I hadn't flown outside the airfield, so I didn't notice anything wrong until now.

Hope you get this before adding too much more.

  7. Sorry Phil, but I didn't get a PM yesterday from you or anyone. Did you mean email? I cleaned out my spam folder, but nothing caught my eye. Can you post or PM me again? From the timing of your post, I am speculating it was about maybe the servers not being up. It's a weekday so the servers don't start until around 7:00am my time usually (Mountain time which is a -7:00 zulu, and then +/- 1 hour for daylight savings time). It's 8:21am as I sign off this post.

  8. Hello Dave, check your PM's. I believe the address I gave you is the correct one for the author.

Take great care in what may be some great development, and please keep in touch with Chris Gordan through the process.

  9. Hello Dave, It's great to hear of your interest in the SOAR Ranch airfield. I for one would love to see some development to it, and I bet Don would as well. Let me do some digging tonight for an updated email address of the original author (Chris Gordan) that I had when trying to convert to FSX. He would probably even give you some ideas as to what he may have wanted seen there along the way.

  10. Yep, I hear you. And definitely we have to thank Peter for CumulusX!! But don't we need to thank you for getting ridge lift off and running? Or at least, you were the one that began the process. I still have video of when it was in beta....one of the beta's had falling Pink/Purple objects bombing the ground in front of me. I can still hear the explosions. I'll have to post that video later maybe to show people just how far this project has really come.

  11. Well, I MIGHT be sold on the idea of a new flight simulator from Microsoft. I'm really going to have to look into what Games for Windows - LIVE is all about. The thing that bothers me though, is why did Microsoft REALLY put an end to the Flight Simulator series. I have not read the forum here at Aerosoft about a 2012 flight sim, so I'm unsure of it's existence yet, but it seems as though Microsoft would have let some of it's main addon suppliers know of the existence of this new Flight experience, before someone putting in a lot of time and effort into a new flight simulator that would be placed in competition with Microsoft. I hope Microsoft knows what it's doing with this flight sim, and hope for sure that they haven't arcaded something that used to be great realistically (as far as what could be done with simulation). I've been a long time fan of the Flight Simulator series, that my heart drops just thinking about Microsoft replacing it. But it's got to be good, do you think???

  12. You should have good fun with the Discus - there's a hell of a lot of detail in it e.g. both the modelling and the panel - it pays to take your time and look around. The aircraft is complex though so you really need to brush up on the documentation. The forum is (of course) here: http://www.forum.aer...p?showforum=271 but in particular it is well worth reading the 'tutorials' in the sub-forum at the top...

I don't always get out of the SOAR Forums, just had to get a reminder that the forum base is HUGE here at Aerosoft. THANKS B21!!!

  13. I also forgot to mention an important one for modifying the lighting, like around clouds is most noticable, it really brings the sim that much closer to being "alive" inside FSX/FS2004, the ENB series graphics is FREEWARE and one of those MUST HAVES that I don't want to live without anymore.

And one more thing, hope this is the last one, but the ocean/lake colors and effects were changed a long time ago with a freeware download. I'll have to look that one up, because that may be one of the lost files from AVSIM. It was freeware, but it only stayed in effect for a few minutes for me, so I think what I had to do was copy the files that had a change to them, and then reinstall them, I really don't recall right now.

  14. Welcome back KSUpilot! Aerosoft's Discus was a little intimidating for me at first (it's my first commercial aircraft, too). I still haven't tried the motorized version yet, but you can be assured that this is a GREAT aircraft to have in your "hanger". The realism is Awesome!

  15. If I had better frame rates, I would definitely get Aerosoft's Dillingham, but I am using the default FSX version so as not to dampen frame rates too much. I have been trying out a freeware screen capturing program (Livestream Procaster) that works as a "LIVE" broadcaster in hopes that I could somehow "televise" events that I have not been able to bring about. But the program doesn't screencapture as good and as well as freeware Debut does.

I am using the freeware FreeTrack v2.2 for my head movement. The head gear that I use cost me something like $15 back then, but can be made much cheaper (or much more expensive as ones budget allows) today and the experience is priceless.

I am still using the freeware version of CumulusX!, so the towplane is controlled only through the use of buttons and controls on the flight equipment that I have using this procedure. I have since graduated to a much more intense flight system (Logitech G940) which is by no means free, but I had relatives that had really loved me and I decided that some of their generosity would go into some enjoyment in my life.

And the terrain mesh is freeware also, most of which I have gotten through Simviation's terrain mesh for FSX, and here for FS2004 / FS2002 / FS2000.

The aircraft is one of Wolfgang's many freeware found here and here, the Glaser-Dirks DG-202 (17m).
