a program like fraps but is freeware

To be frank, if you don't mind a tiny logo in your first videos, you may well use Fraps for free.

As far as I remember, the freeware limitation of this programme is (except for the logo) recording in intervals no longer that 30 seconds.

But this is absolutely enough! Although I finally bought Fraps, I almost never take shots longer that 10 seconds.

And then, in Windows Movie Maker 2 for example, you may make a great video from your raw material.

After making a few videos, if you don't like Fraps, you just don't buy it.

If you do - you won't have any doubts. As easy as that!

Best regards,

Rafal

If you have a camcorder with a s-video connection and a videocard with a s-video out, then that is all you need. Set your videocard to dual monitor and clone the screen. The camcorder becomes your second monitor and then hit the record button on the camcorder. No performance hit either (unlike fraps.)
