  1. Hi whoever is doing a good job of administering these fora... pls change the name of this forum to sim_logger, as that program has now officially replaced sim_probe.

    thanks!

    B21

Sorry to be slow in responding, have been out of town for over a week. I changed the title to reflect both programs as there will most likely still be pilots using SimProbe and will also need a place to ask questions. Could you read the blurb and re-write if you feel it needs to be explained better. Hope this is ok, if not, let me know and will work something out!

  2. Just an update on the Swiss race. :( Sorry but we have had a family emergency and Don is not going to be able to get back to the Swiss Race until mid November!

We want to thank Peter for getting something going in the meantime and apologize for all those waiting for the Swiss Race. If there are any other pilots out there that would want to do a race, fun-fly, etc. when Peter's ends using the new Aerosoft glider, please go for it!! We would appreciate any and all contributions to promote this wonderful new glider and bring more events to SOAR. :D

Will let you know more in November

  3. The new Aerosoft Glider will be released soon!! :ididit_s: Mathijs is offering all SOAR Members a special discount when it is released. :cheers_s: Please wait to purchase until we receive the info on how Aerosoft will do this! Thanks Mathijs for thinking of SOAR. :boingy_s:

:excellenttext_s: There will also be a special competition using the glider and Aerosoft will help with the publicity/advertising the event and will furnish prizes!! This is one competition that you will definitely want to participate it! Keep watching the SOAR board for more details!!

  4. :clap_s: Great News!! The CCS files will be uploaded to the new SOAR Upload/Download section of the Aerosoft forums. Please see the announcement about this new feature in this same section for a link if you have not already done so!!

The CCS files will be up as soon as possible so please be patient as there are quite a few of them! Thanks to Scott for volunteering to take this task on!

  5. Hi Scott, Sorry your post got by us. :lazy_s:

I will drop Shaun a note to see if he wants me to redirect any inappropriate posts from SOAR to another forum or if we should drop him a pm when we find one. For now, let Don or I know if you find one and where it is. Please feel to post, pm, or email either of us. Don is online and checks mail and the boards every day whereas I am not always able to. I will check out the description for SOAR and see if it can be changed - good suggestion!!

    :groupflip_s:

  6. Thanks guys for all that you have done for us!!!

Will do Karen, I'll try to get going on it soon, but I still have not had a chance to look into the way of the "Slope Data Base Tool!", I believe that this would be the way to go and it would also free up server space, but I'll try and start uploading the beginning of next week.

    Scott

Thanks Scott! That will be great, whenever you can get to it is fine! We are so glad for this opportunity to get them back online as there are still many pilots that use FS9! :boingy_s:

  7. :excellenttext_s: Aerosoft has given us more space on their servers so we can upload/download files that will only be available to members. This is a wonderful feature as the file size is up to 50 mgs per file!!! Please take advantage of this great way to make files available to other SOAR/Aerosoft members!! Aerosoft also has a similar section that is available to SOAR members for non-sailplane related!! This is wonderful feature for members - hope some of you will post a thanks to Mathijs, Shaun, and crew for this perk! :ididit_s:

here is the download link - be sure you are logged in before going to it or you will get an error!

    Uploads/Downloads

There are 6 catagories so please take care to put your upload in correct catagory. Remember not over 50mgs each file!

    1. Sailplane Related

    2. Utilities

    3. FSX Missions

    4. FS9 Flights

    5. Video Clips

    6. CCS Related

Important! When uploading a file, you are also giving SOAR permission to post your file on the main SOAR site (Download section) if we choose to do so, so please put a readme with each file including a blurb about the file, creator's name, etc.

If you do not want your file posted to the main SOAR site, please contact Don by email with your reasons before posting the file. Don's email

    ENJOY!! :cheers_s:

Scott, Please feel free to upload the CCS files whenever you can. Thanks so much for doing this for us - know it takes alot of time!! We appreciate all your help! :goodjob_s:

Peter, Please consider uploading your wench here! :cool3_s:

  8. To those of you that are not familiar with SOAR, we are made up of 2 components:

    1. SOAR site

    2. SOAR Message board

They are located in different places. Due to problems with our message board, Aerosoft offered to help us by hosting our board, but the main SOAR site still remains where it was!

A big thank you to Aerosoft!!! We are very happy with the move and wish to extend our thanks for including us on the Aerosoft Forums!!

The main SOAR site is still active and located at http://www.virtualsoaring.org

As always it contains downloads, activities, etc. We are a repository for soaring related downloads that cannot usually be found elsewhere. Please visit us!!

  9. Hi I noticed that one of the downsides of the new amalgamated site is that posts specific to Soar tend to be buried in a sea of other posts. I used to click on new posts to see what was going on in Soar but now a large amount of stuff comes up. Maybe I'm being lazy and just need to check thru it.

    Hodge

Sorry about that, but unfortunately that is one of the downsides. If you go to the main SOAR section, then click on each of the 4 sections, you will see on the right hand side the last post. That will at least show you if there has been current posting in that catagory.

Sorry, but I don't know how to get around it otherwise.......... :(

  10. As you have noticed by now, the message board has really changed! We will be moving to the Aerosoft forums in the next few days thanks to the gracious offer of Mathijs Kok to host our board at no charge! We have pruned the board quite a bit to eliminate old items that no longer receive any posts!

This move, we feel, is in the best interest of SOAR and will definitely give us more exposure and hopefully boost soaring to the general public. Don & I will still have control of the SOAR portion and will be able to add catagories as needed and will also do the moderation of the posting.

Scott brought up about losing the history and wealth of information contained in the old board. Mathijs has told us that there very possibly will be a problem with transfering the messages over, but that transfering the membership will not be a problem. I think we have a solution to losing our old posts. I am going to ask a certain SOAR member to install a free board on the SOAR site and transfer all of our posts as of 2 Mar 2009 to this "archive". We may lose a few days of posts, but at least we could save all our history. On this board, login would not be required and everyone would be able to read, but not post or upload anything. I realize this is not the perfect situation, but Don and I both feel this is the best option!

  11. Option #1 scares me just a little, but that sounds like the best solution. I would sure hate to lose the wealth of information on the board. It also lets a person see some of the history of SOAR if they wanted to, and the progress that has been made.

With Microsoft maybe not doing the Flight Simulator series anymore, will it be okay with Aerosoft if we, way way into the future, have another sim as the dominant sim talked about on the board, if it so happens?

    Scott

Yes, we are saddened at losing all the history also. We have a complete backup of the board as it existed 2 Mar 2009. We are going to see about the possiblity of importing all those posts into an "archive" board that folks would be able to read and refer to for reference and history, but not post to. This would mean doing a simple free board that would just reside on the SOAR site.

As to another simulator discussion. I don't see any problem if Microsoft does not continue with it's sim. Aerosoft itself has an airline sim. The main reason Aerosoft is helping us, I believe is because of the soaring aspect - not necessarily MS. Hopefully in the future there will be another sim - one dedicated to soaring! *grin*

  12. As you know, the SOAR board was down for a few days! Fortunately it is back again, but who knows for how long???? We have been having problems for awhile now with hackers, and having had to do all registrations manually. We no longer have an account with Invision which means we are not able to update the board anymore. For some reason they quit taking our $$ automatically and the account lapsed without our knowledge. We just cannot see paying another $150 for another license +$25 every 6 months, since this site is not commercial and we have to fund it ourselves.

This leaves us a couple of options:

    1. Aerosoft has graciously offered to host our board and it would remain the same as now except it would be on their site along with their forum. There would be a clear notice that our board is not connected to Aerosoft as they are a commercial entity, rather that they are doing this as a favor to the soaring community! They would do this at no charge and their techs would do all the transfering/maintence. This would sure eliminate us going down and our existing problems!! It would also benefit SOAR by giving us more exposure/traffic!

    2. We could install another free board and continue on. This would keep the board on our site and we would still control it. The problem so far has been finding one in which we could keep all our old posts and keep our membership intact. I do not even know if this is possible to find. If not, it would mean starting our board from scratch and losing all our old messages. This is not a situation that we want!

We welcome your comments on our options!

  13. Posted for Zorro.

What should a laptop computer specifications be for flight simulators?

I would like to know what the laptop computer specifications should be for gaming software. I am looking at a 17" Dell laptop "Alienware" running Windows Vista 64-bit. My computer specifications are listed below.

    Will 64bit work?

I intend on running flight simulators with special interest in any and all soaring software. Will this be a good machine for gaming?

Video graphics card- Dual 512 MB ATI mobility HD 3870 CrossfireX Enabled

Processor- Intel Core p8400 2.26 GHz, 3 MB Cache

Design Display- 17" Wide UXGA 1920 x1200 with Clearview Technology

    Memory- 4GB dual channel DDR3 SO-DIMM at 1066 MHz

System Drive- 160 GB 7200 rpm. I could move up to a 320 GB 7200 rpm if you think it's better?

Optical Drive- 8x Dual layer Burner DVD +-RW, CD RW

Wireless Network Card- Wireless Intel Ultimate 5300 a/b/g/ Draft -n Mini Card (450 Mbps)

Sound Card- Internal High Definition with Surround Sound

Wireless Router- D Link DGL 4500 Xtreme n Gaming Router

    Three year warranty

Total cost for the above is $2,800.00

Will this do the job? Would you change anything?

I look forward to hearing form any and all.

    Thanks,

    Zorro

  14. Yesterday we suspended the "no new registrations" at SOAR, but within 24 hours we have been hit by multiple bogus registrations. We have again had to suspend new registrations!!

We need the help of IAN or any SOAR member that has knowleged about the board and hackers. I think I have figured out what is going on, but do not know how to fix it!

I filled out a test registration, filled out the form and input the alpha-numeric code from the security image. All went well and I received a message that I would receive a verification email which I needed to click on to verify my email. I NEVER received the email, so I decided to try to log in anyway and was SUCCESSFUL!! I think someone has hacked in to this portion and the email verification is being by passed!! Can anyone help solve this??? Also, I have a question as to whether even if the security image is being by passed as the look of these registrations is similar to when bots register!

We would appreciate any help anyone can offer!

    Thanks! Don & Karen

  15. We have temporarily suspended all new registrations due to a flood of probably bogus registrations!! We have also deleted all registrations that occurred after 1 Oct, 2008.

If you registered legitimately and your membership has been deleted, please drop us an emal and we will restore your membership.

Unfortunately there has been a bunch of registrations each day with weird names and all originating from either a Russian domain or g-mail. Our normal traffic for new registrations is one or two every few days/week. We are trying to determine if this is an attack on our board or something completely innocent and just a coincidence.

Ian, could you offer your opinion and check out the board settings to see if they can be improved for more security? Thanks!

  16. Have uploaded another sailplane, cloud, sun - with the sun behind the clouds. *grin*

    Peter,

Have to make changes as a vector, not a bitmap otherwise it gets jaggies. I can send you larger one already converted to bitmap, but you will not be able to alter size as a bitmap........... Do you have Adobe Illustrator or Coral Draw?? Both are vector programs, then you export finished product to a bmp, jpg, gif, etc

Also, Ian has to be able to fit finished image into size of forum header so that is main consideration.

BTW, size of image words can also be changed, but they are also vector to avoid jaggies.

  17. Hmmm, even though the logo is a vector, when it was resized to 76 px vertical, then converted to a gif - it was a mess! The conversion made words unreadable. So, here are a couple of thoughts.

    1. I resized the components of the logo, the word SOAR, the word founded in 1999, and the sun, cloud, & sailplanes. They are uploaded to graphics/logos/soar message board project. You can play around with these and see if this might be a way to go.

    or

    2. Check out http://www.xplanefreeware.net/forums/ They have a taller header. If we went with something like that we could leave the logo intact.

What do you think?? Ian, Don, & I welcome all opinions.

  18. Ian,

Don did the logo in vector rather than bitmap so I can reduce it a bit more, if you want and see if it is readable. Then you can play with it and see how it looks. Will do it tomorrow and upload to the same folder as the other size logos.

Oh, building the site around the domain is great, but when Lenny started this, I don't even know what domain they had, if any. I remember it was on a free server until Chris became director and I started helping with the site. Then we had 2 sites, one for the main stuff and one for the races, etc. - both using free servers. We never had enough room for everything so Chris decided to pay for a site, but the domain SOAR was not available so we came up with virtualsoaring.org. It was even after this when he started a message board...........

SOAR has been around for about 9 years now, and back then the predictions were that this type of site only lasted a couple of years............... That is one reason we would like to keep it going under the original name. Just a bit of history.......... :D

  19. Please don't take this the wrong way, but virtualsoaring isn't the easiest website to use. Suggestions:

    (1) keep the 'General' forum at the top (as now), and the FSX forum SECOND (not third). I.e. demote this "SOAR Admin Related" forum set which is less interesting to most users.

    (2) add a 'MISSIONS' sub forum to the FSX forum set - it's frustrating there's so little knowledge of these in the virtualsoaring.org fraternity - we have more discussion on fsxmission.com about soaring than here because that is missing - maybe it's too late though.

Can do that - no problem

    (3) DELETE the www.virtualsoaring.org banner page that opens new windows on the two (english/french) links, and make the english home page the main homepage with a link to the french page on it.

This is a problem because whoever started the site made the main page goto.html instead of index.html so when someone just types in virtualsoaring.org, they will not go to the main page. I put the index page there to avoid renaming goto.html which has been used for years and years. Folk can bookmark goto.html and skip the intro page. I will look into renaming goto and see how much of a job it will be as far as changing links though.

    (4) the link to the forums on the homepage should NOT OPEN A NEW WINDOW, just make it an ordinary link.

The reason this opens into a new window is cause I did not want it or any of the other pages opening in frames cause they are such a pain to use, but frames were necessary on the main page to avoid having to put a nav bar on every page.............

    (5) change the invision power board logo (logo4.gif) into the virtualsoaring.org logo, and make the link take you to the virtualsoaring.org HOMEPAGE *not* the root of the bulletin boards. The current setup just breaks any web use guideline, even with the fairly poor virtualsoaring.org link under the logo.

If you want admin help, let me know.

    Ian

I am not sure how to do this so if you would like to help I would appreciate it. Also, the board needs an update, but my upload connection is so slowwwwww, I am not able to do it and have not been able to find anyone that could do it for me. Would you be interested??? We would sure appreciate it and also appreciate your suggestions! If you want to do these things write us at the director at virtualsoaring addy and I will give you a pass word to get into the admin. Thanks!

  20. I think the duplicate ccs files you are finding are the ones related to SOAR Ranch:

ccs_soar_ranch_andes_s38w072.zip is already in ccs_soar_ranch_andes_SA_4x4.zip so no need to upload it.

I don't know of any other duplicates.

Probably the fastest way of finding out the author of any of the slope files might be to email Chris Gordan and/or Tom Eagles. They both were really involved with the ccs files. If you do not have current addys, drop me a note and I will give you their current ones. :smiles:

  21. For the time being, SOAR will no longer be able to offer the CCS files for download. We are sorry for the inconvenience! confused2.gif

The files have been uploaded to Avsim. Please check there!

  22. Tom,

I want to thank you for your help and am sorry to see you leave. I appreciate all you have done for SOAR and wish you the best in the future!

    :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2:
