  1. It still works - within it's limits. I never succeeded to get the polar issue right; real polars won't work - you really need the polar from the virtual plane. Once I was able to read the polar from the fs2004 version FSX came along and everything changed again. And I got tired of writing a new program every two years...

Wolfgang last updated the LS18-8 as recently as August of this year, and it still has your gauges. I just had a quick look at the virtual cockpit today, and the CAISet is much clearer and easier to read than the FSX GPSnav.

That's because I wrote those gauges with readability in mind and MS didn't. The Aerosoft Discus has the same problem - it looks quit right but you can't read it. Both are quite useless for real virtual flying...

I have no idea what's involved in making a new one from scratch.

    You're lucky...

More seriously: all you need is a good C/C++ compiler and an awful lot of spare time. And someone to talk to - if it wouldn't have been for Chris (Gordan) I would never have finished the CAIset at all...

  2. Hi all,

it's great to see that the old SOAR message board has arrived safely at it's new home...

May it be the start of a new era and bring new heights to the virtual soaring community...

    :cheers2:

ps - LOL whatever happened to my favourite icon ?

  3. ok,

I could do with some help...

There's a new recorder to be tested - it comes with a new viewer, a new plane and some other stuff.

Let me warn you: there won't be an installer - all the stuff has to be installed manually so you should know how to move some files around - and it's FSX only...

So if you have some time to spare and love to test something new, send me a PM, I'll prepare a readme file, put a little zip together and mail you a download link - in a couple of days...

It's all still in alpha state so be prepared for a lot of bugs - even the plane isn't finished... :embaressed:

Anyone in for a little fun? :not_i:

    :cheers2:

  4. Option 1 sounds great to me - and Mathijs always loved virtual soaring - first at Lago (remember Emma Field ? - still the only scenery add-on you really need for fs2002/4... ) and now at Aerosoft (check out the Discus they are building :lightbulb: ) ...

    :cheers2:

  5. The way things are going I'll have an alpha version of the Glider Aerobatics Viewer (GAViewer) ready in a couple of weeks and we can start evaluating what needs to be done to make it all come together.

The biggest problem will be to create some realistic airfiles - plane models ain't so difficult - it's all in the airfiles. But there are some good motorized airfiles around so we might learn a trick or two of those... :lightbulb:

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Aerosoft Discus - Mathijs should be able to come up with an reasonably useful airfile... :dirol:

  6. @Don

Yes, I agree about the possible limitations of MSFS - but one can always try (LOL) - adding thermals to FS98 wasn't that easy either...

    @Scott

The challenge is just what I like (love) - it's all about finding the limits of what's possible - glider aerobatics hasn't been done - yet...

    @Hodge

Gliding aerobatics must be the most demanding form of soaring - even more demanding than it's motorized version (without an engine to save you) - it must be the purist form of flying...

btw - using aerobatics within thermal flights is a waste of energy - in thermal flight never pull up - just take the turn...

The brandnew recorder is running - 25 records per second is possible - a 3D viewer is next...

    :cheers2:

  7. Hi all,

one of the discarded old projects I found on one of my harddiscs is the Aerobatic Viewer - a way to fly and judge aerobatic sailplane flights.

The general idea at the time was to create the possibilty to fly aerobatic figures in MSFS - to display the figures to fly in the sky - how to fly them and get comments while flying them (like a real time instructor...) and to be able to judge those flights afterwards.

I'm just wondering if there would be any interest in a project like that: it would mean to design an all new 3D viewer, a library of figures to fly, a couple of special aerobatic planes (both old and new), a new recorder, special gauges, aerobatic panels, ect., ect....

The files I dug out where for FS2000 so I guess some updating is needed - the best way might be to start anew...

    Any suggestions ?

    :cheers2:

    Max.

  8. Ian,

you're absolutely right - there's a bug in the Viewer...

But it only shows when it's used in the way you're trying to use it.

The original setup of the Viewer is: you set up a task, selected from a *.dat file, the task is saved in the gps-nav.dat file to be used by the gps-nav. Once the flight is completed both the gps-nav.dat file and the soarrec.log file are loaded in the Viewer and can be saved, either as a flight.dat and flight.log or as a flight.igc file. At the time of saving the task becomes a part of the flight.igc file. That works as intended.

The option "load any *.igc" file is only there to view the logs - it never was my intention to re-save any *.igc file... <grin>. That's why the the HFDTE entry is changed to the current date - the date the file is created.

What you want is an option to create a task for a flight already flown and save it...

I'll dig out those source codes to see if it's possible to change those codes accordingly...

A small question: have you tried to add the task entries with a text editor ? It should be possible to add those lines by hand...

    :cheers2:

    Max.

  9. Ian,

a *.igc file should look like this:

    AFILUNKNOWN

    HFDTE091208

    HFFXA100

    HFSITSITE:Huizen NL

    HFPLTPILOT:Roodveldt Max

    HFGTYGLIDERTYPE:Genesis 2

    HFGIDGLIDERID:PH-9999

    HFDTM100GPSDATUM:WGS-1984

    HFCIDCOMPETITIONID:MR

    HFCCLCOMPETITIONCLASS:15M

    C091208224658091208000102

    B1403545325346N00541690EA0111301113

    B1403555325343N00541671EA0111201112

    B1403565325339N00541651EA0110901109

    B1403575325336N00541631EA0110701107

    B1403585325332N00541610EA0110401104

    B1403595325329N00541588EA0110101101

so your log file must be corrupt...

I tried to figure out what it is you're trying to achieve - correct me if I'm wrong - you're trying to add the task to the igc file so you can load the file into another program. I remember I loaded files like that into the SeeYou program and that this worked as intended. Just let me know what you exactly want and I'll look into it first thing tomorrow morning... B)

(please remember there's a lot of dust on this old stuff so it might take some time...)

    Scott,

no problem - I know Dave is doing a Genesis 2 - he asked me if he could use some code I did recently.

btw - how is your Twin ? - any progress yet ?

    Cheers,

    Max

  10. Hi,

if I remember correctly the task should be in the *.dat file - that should make it possible to show both the task and the log file...

The timestamp is quite easy - every second an entry is added to the logfile - opening the logfile with wordpad will make this clear.

When in doubt mail me the file and I will have a look...

    Cheers,

    Max.
