How to choose a computer for Microsoft Flight Simulator ?

SOME GUIDELINES AND DOWN TO EARTH FACTS

Flight Simulator is a high-demanding game in terms of graphics, processor and memory.
It therefore requires a high end computer. There is nothing to change about that.

Of course, you have some latitude between several machines and several prices
but if you cut corners too much, you simulator may just not work at all.
... now or later when a slightly more demanding update or addon will be published.

Also, preferably, do not use a laptop.
See Mathijs Kok’s detailed post about laptops here :

- 1 - COMPUTER SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

These are split in two : MINIMAL and RECOMMENDED

Altough both configurations will allow the program to start and run, keep in mind that if you opt for the minimal configuration,
you won't be able to take advantage
of the full capabilities (Graphics and FPS) of the game.
You may end-up with a very good FSX only.

- Minimum :

- OS    Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher

- Architecture            x64

- Keyboard     Yes

- Mouse          Yes

- DirectX         Version 11

- Memory        8 GB

- Video Memory        2 GB

- Processor    Intel i5-4460 | AMD Ryzen 3 1200

- Graphics      NVIDIA GTX 770 | AMD Radeon RX 570

- Recommended :

- OS    Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher

- Architecture            x64

- Keyboard     Yes

- Mouse          Yes

- DirectX         Version 11

- Memory        16 GB

- Video Memory        4 GB

- Processor    Intel i5-8400 | AMD Ryzen 5 1500X

- Graphics      NVIDIA GTX 970 | AMD Radeon RX 590

- 2 - MISCELLANEOUS REQUIREMENTS

- DVD Reader :
DVD No. 1 has to stay in the DVD reader  at any time to use the game

A permanent DVD reader is therefore required.

- Fast Internet connection

Required to install and play the game.

Even with the DVD version, there will be a fair amount of data to be downloaded at install time and every time a new update is available.
Updates are mendatory. There is no way not to install available updates.

--à Expect up to 10 hours download.

- A strong power supply

Do not spare on power supply.

The graphic card but also the USB controls and avionics will require a lot of current.
If too much current is required from a weak power supply, the voltage will drop.
If the voltage drops, some binary “1” could be detected as “0” and generate random false data. This could lead to chaotic system behavior difficult to pinpoint or even computer crash.

- Powered USB hubs

If you use more USB devices than available USB ports, use externally powered USB hubs.
Otherwise, you may pull too much current from the computer power supply due to the extra USB ports on the hubs

- 3 - HOW TO DETERMINE IF MY PROCESSOR AND GRAPHIC CARD ARE WITHIN THE SPECIFICATIONS ?

You can use the UserBenchmark online :
(This is for information only. This is not a guarantee your system will work.)

- For the graphic card :
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-770-vs-Group-/2174vs10
On the left-hand dropdown menu, the minimum required GPU is already filled in.
Simply choose yours from the right-end one and press ENTER.
The percentage comparison will appear below.

- For the main processor :

On the left-hand dropdown menu, the minimum required CPU  is already filled in.
Simply choose yours from the right-end one and press ENTER.
The percentage comparison will appear below.
