  1. Thanks Don for pinning those posts to the top of the page, also for updating the forum look. I kinda hated to see the Condor forum dismantled, but like you said, there was no activity for a long, long time. I've been thinking a ways to contact old members that used CCS2004 to see if they would get or reload FSX for another try at soaring especially with CumulusX. What do you think? Should something like that wait for the finished version of CumulusX to come out, or not?

  2. I like that idea Don. I am a member of an online racing community for NR2003 which holds a few of those a year. Only, I think it's for everone that is able to join them. So it would be like having many Chapters at the event. I've never been to one and most likely wont ever be able to, but from the pics and the conversation that results, it sure boosts morale amongst members.

  3. wormburner, I have to ask you to resend those files if you could please. Yahoo will not open them for some reason. It seems they are not going to fix whatever problem I'm having any time soon, so I just thought if you re-emailed them to me, they may open. I'm hoping anyways.

  4. I guess I was really getting my hopes up. So my presumption may be correct I guess, that it is possible for someone to already be using CumulusX in the FSX Multiplayer environment for his/her own gain. I'm totally heartbroken! Peter has a program that quite possibly has the makings of becoming one of the most downloaded programs for FSX glider pilots ever.

  5. I just got done yesterday scanning the Dillingham, HI area with 10m terrain mesh in FSX. From what you are saying, this may have been for nothing but fun flying I guess. This is going to set the program back a ways if we want it to depict as close to reality as possible, but I'm all for it if it can be done. I'd rather that, then to have something unrealistic. How unrealistic are we talking about though? Was it unrealized by Eric or was it not worth the effort to correct the problem?

Another thing to think about is, if there is a different method to come up with making the slope files, it should probably only be in a format that CumulusX! can read possibly. Because in a contest situation, a person who is less honest may feel no harm in using files created directly from CCS2004 to get an advantage then.

  6. We must be thinking alike, at the same time you made this post, I was in the process of gathering info for an email to you about a free file splitter program I had found and used with no viruses/spyware/adware. I'll check my email for the files, and Thank You for have sending them. As far as airports/gliderports in that area in real life, do you know how many there are? FSX only has two, one to the NE and one to the SW of the area.

And WOW! Getting a real glider sounds exciting.

  7. This topic will hopefully help you run old events/contests in FSX. It was started in a different thread and will continue here. Here's what has been said so far....

    Scott,

Can you also write a sticky-instruction on how to convenrt the 2002 tour the suisse files to fsx?

    Bert

I'll see what I can do Bert. But for now, just place the two files with the same name (usually: one is a .WX file and the other is a Microsoft Flight Simulator Application file) inside the ...\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files folder. Then place the gps-nav.dat (may have the same name as the other two files, and if so, rename it "gps-nav") inside the main FSX folder, assuming you have all the files you need to run it already installed to FSX.

Then run FSX and load it from the FreeFlight Load option. Depending on which FS you downloaded from, you may have to change the weather. In this case, I chose real-world weather to get a real weather file, since I'm not a weather man, I don't know how to create a realistic one. I would say if you download an event/contest that was used in CCS2004, the weather should be ideal but I cannot say for sure.

    sf4JC

I forgot to mention that after you hit 'Load', you will get an error message about a certain aircraft (whatever aircraft they were flying at the time) could not load. Then after you enter the flight, usually in pause mode, resave the flight with the aircraft you want to fly.

    sf4JC

Thanks for the explaination, but am I right that I also have to make a flightplan to get my GPS and NAV-equipment to work? And do I use the tdsmap.jpg for that?

    Bert

bruin, I'm going to start another thread for this topic so it doesn't clog up this thread.

    sf4JC

bruin, yes you would have to make some sort of flight plan probably if you are not using the Max Roodveldt's CAISET instruments. I am unsure of how to go about doing this because I've never done a flight plan for a race before in FSX.

I use the CIASET to analyse my flight afterward in the 'FSZweverView 2' application. It can convert the flight file to something a contest scoring application can read. So if there is still a future with these instruments, we could run a race with points given instead of just time I think.

You need the appropriate instruments in your aircraft for the flight recorder to work. I believe all of Wolfgang Piper's aircraft for FS2004 have these instruments. I am using his FSX aircraft with modified panel for the instruments to work.

  10. Easy way to Convert Slope .DAT Files, if not using the SlopeDataBaseTool!

    (1). Download and Install CCS2004. ( http://x-c.home.att.net/ )

(2). Place the slope .DAT file(s) inside CCS2004 'IMPORT' folder. (You can find slope files at AVSIM [ http://www.avsim.com/ ] in the 'FS2004 - Miscellaneous Files' section. Do a search for "CCS2004" and the files should come up.

(3). Start CCS2004 (Do NOT have FS2004/FSX running, for this will slow the process. It will work that way though, just not as fast.). Press 'Unscripted' or 'Scripted' mode and then the 'Exit and Launch Cross-Country Soaring' button.

(4). You will then receive a confirmation box when a file is complete. After the last one is complete, you will get a message saying that CCS2004 "...cannot link to FSUIPC. Make sure FS is running and try again.". Press the OK button and your FINISHED.

Place the .slo files as instructed by CumulusX! instructions and REALLY SOAR!!

    sf4JC

EDIT: If this process does not work for you, please state how or why, and we will try to get it fixed somehow. Thanks.

    EDITED again on 06/17/08

  11. Hey guys, I've been thinking about making a thread with basic instructions on how to convert the slope files for use with CumulusX!. I just don't want people to think it's a whole big process to make them .slo files.

I discovered something while converting more files today again, and it goes a whole lot faster. With the .DAT files in the IMPORT folder of CCS2004, start CCS2004 and press the "Exit and Launch Cross-Country Soaring" button without having FS2004/FSX running. Then just wait for the confirmation message(s) to end. The last message you see is a message saying something like CCS2004 could not connect, then close it. THAT'S IT!

Can anyone else confirm that this method works, cause it saves a LOT of time. Also just so Peter knows, and the rest of you all too, I've got a little over 3500 .slo files in the CumulusX! folder with no ill effects yet.

    sf4JC

  12. Thanks Don! The SOAR homepage looks inviting now, it feels a whole lot better. I'll see what I can do as far as singleplayer shots, I did "Tour de Suisse #10" and the scenery was just awsome.

A big THANKS to Jim451 for helping me find more races to add to my FSX folder.

    sf4JC

  13. Thanks, I first thought it had something to do with the way I was moving my head with FreeTrack v2.1, but then I didn't use it and I still saw the movement. Then I didn't now whether it started with Acceleration/SP2, and whether or not to uninstall to see if the problem went away.

    sf4JC

  14. Peter, I noticed a potential problem for the casual user. I noticed this a while back, but didn't concern me all that much, but when I hit pause, I still get verticle movement (both up and down depending on position to slope maybe. I'm also not exactly sure if it came before or after Acceleration/SP2. Can anyone varify this, or is anybody else noticing this?

    sf4JC

  15. Don and Karen, I was wondering if maybe the SOAR Home Page could be changed somewhat. I know CumulusX isn't a done program yet, but it seems to be coming along pretty good for the future of FSX.

So. . . I was just wondering if the statement made about FSX and even maybe something about FS2004 could have a bit more of a positive or "enthusiastic" approach. Maybe even say that there could be a possibility for future contests by joining FS2004 and FSX in the same session. Just a thought, cause it really makes me think a person may see the message now and quite possibly not come back. And I know the contest thing is sortof not realized yet and may not even be possible with the final program, but it could be somewhat of a "entice" or an "allure" (for lack of better words) for people to come back for updates on how things are coming.

    What do you all think?

    sf4JC

  16. Peter, I got to download and install CumulusX04 Friday morning and run for a few minutes. As expected, it loaded transparent and I liked it. BUT, it was having a huge drain on my FPS, so I had to run it minimized. Which I was okay with I guess since I know it's working, but I also liked seeing what kind of info it was reading underneath me. It really probably doesn't matter since it's mainly for debugging purposes, but I just thought I'd tell you just in case it has an impact on the final program.

Also, from the graphs above describing the differences between CumulusX and CCS2004, is there still an adaptability to have persons running Fs2004 w/CCS2004 and FSX w/CumulusX together in the same session as long as each person knows the sim the others are using as to not to get into a paralyzing situation? I mean, can a group of people be running different sims in the same multiplayer session for fun without very differing circumstances? The reason I ask is, I'd like to start using FSHost again since it allows users in FS2002/FS2004/FSX to be in the same multiplayer session. Maybe I should look into FSINN?

What does everybody here use for multiplayer sessions, FSX Multiplayer, FSINN, or FSHost? or what other free services are there?

    sf4JC

PS. What did you mean in your last post about possibly running CumulusX, CCS2004, and FSX at the same time? or Did I totally miss what you were saying? Are we to run them both with CumulusX05?

EDIT: Nevermind, I think I know now what you meant. So now, my question is, in the future, will it possibly be possible to run a contest with both sims together in the same contest? Maybe have "handicaps" or something to level the racing field.

  17. Here's video of both the Lightspeed and the other,

. The first one uses old instruments that cause FSX to tell you they are from FS98 or something like that, but you only have to answer a few times per load. It seems as though they both worked in FSX okay, but I'm unsure of how they act in FS2004 where they came from. I like the wind sound in the second aircraft, and it seems to have more sensitivities and makes the Virtual cockpit move around possibly like real. I'm just not sure if the second was made accurately in simulating the real thing.

Hope you like the video, I kinda messed up when switching aircraft to the second and naming that aircraft though. Oh well, I'm still basically new to video making.

  18. Just thought I'd chime in, I'm on XP with SP2 and FSX with SP2. I'm on the laptop right now so I cannot give my computer spec's.

Also just wanted to let you all know I'm heading out of town tomarrow for a few days, so I won't be able to test at all until I get back. I wish I could have tested CumulusX04 on my computer before I left, but it didn't happen.

This morning I thought I was getting funny readings flying in the Harris Hill NY area. I thought it was possibly due to what I was flying (FS2004 paragliders/hanggliders in FSX). My time was cut short so I didn't have time to try the glider that I normally fly to see if it had the same effects. This was with CumulusX032.

EDIT: My computer is a 2.19 GHz Athlon 3500+ (single core), 2GB RAM, 512MB ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card, on a WindowsXP SP2 system.
