SlickQ400 3
Way behind schedule ... Donny, our mechanic and major sponsor (ie Fuel) decided to change the spark-plugs and adjust the tappets on all four engines over the weekend ... took a tad longer than he anticipated ... Here he is loading our supplies - tools, large drums of Duckhams Engine Oil and several large crates of KLG spark-plugs ... not sure what else he's bringing along Please login to display this image. SlickQ400 3
A few days late but we're finally underway The plan was to fly the first legs from Heathrow to Brindisi LIBR then Port Said but we encountered a small problem while cruising over the English Channel ... a slight zapping noise from somewhere on the flight-deck ...and the Ammeter was fluctuating intermittently ... We continued on over France while George (co-pilot) and I took turns attempting to locate the source of the electrical problem. Donny (our sponsor - Donny's Discount Gas) didn't seem perturbed "Just fly on, get us over the Alps, and we'll check it out when we get to Italy" he said, as he swigged another mouthful from his thermos, then turned to look out the side window and grimaced as he swallowed his cold coffee... "I don't like this" George murmured sideways to me as he seemed to stare ahead over the dash - but I could see his unblinking eyes were still methodically scanning the gauges on the instrument panel "Right - we're diverting" Approach LFSB Please login to display this image. Our passengers (30 VIP's who've paid a princely sum to join us on this adventure) were not exactly ecstatic when we announced the diversion and the 'Mayday' but most were impressed when we arrived safely at Basel-Mulhouse LFSB and they had the opportunity to do some shopping and touring while we sort out the aircraft problem. Hoping tomorrow to be back in the air to continue onward to Port Said ... Slick 4
Our previous flight - from Brindisi to Port Said - went well ... we had some poor weather at times but the aircraft performed flawlessly and the passengers were happy. The only problem was the obvious tension between co-pilot George and our mechanic Donny ... the professional working environment deteriorated during our next leg - Port Said to Yenbo in Saudi Arabia... I feared they would actually come to blows on the flight-deck... Slick 4
Things were back to normal after a few days rest in Yenbo. I pulled George aside and asked him what his problems were with Donny - "I don't trust him" was his short reply. We were under the constant scrutiny of the Egyptian Armed Forces during our stay in Port Said, and things were no different in Saudi Arabia... Royal Saudi Land Force personnel were stationed close to where we were parked, but that didn't stop Donny from disappearing on several occasions for many hours at a time - we were not sure of his whereabouts but he eventually did return in time for our departure to Ambouli, Djibouti. George and Donny were both in good spirits for the flight to Ambouli, and I breathed a sigh of relief when we landed several hours later that there were no incidents with the crew or the aircraft... Slick 4
Arrived in Salalah, Oman for a quick refuel and check of the aircraft. Landed in the afternoon and stayed just one night. I had wanted to spend more time in Salalah - capital of Oman's southern Dhofar province ... the history of this town (not to mention the beautiful beaches) had me hoping we would be able to spend at least two or three days - but it was not to be. We're running short on time... Next leg will be to Karachi, Pakistan, and then on to Mumbai (Bombay) Donny and George were at it again - this time there was an altercation in the cockpit and I've had to make the decision to discipline Donny - although he's our volunteer mechanic and major sponsor - he's not sitting up front again. Slick 4
Barely 20 minutes after our departure from Salalah, we encountered a problem with the aircraft - a major fuel leak. I wasn't taking any chances - we diverted to Marmul, an airstrip located in an oil-drilling area pretty much in the middle of nowhere. But the airport has been upgraded in recent times and had an asphalt strip, emergency services and maintenance operations. We made it down safely without any more damage to the plane - but the look George gave me as we sat on the runway after shutting down the engines actually scared me. "you know this wasn't an accident - he's caused this... " flicking his gaze back toward the rear of the aircraft then back at me ... "we'll wait and see George ... Slick 4
Please login to display this image. Please login to display this image. Apologies for the lack of updates in the diary these last couple of weeks... The flights have been fantastic; the DC-6 is performing flawlessly (since our minor problem in Oman); the passengers have been more than happy with the service and the Company is making good money The only problem has been with our crew ... George our co-pilot went missing during our stop-over in Karachi. It seems he fell head-over-heels in love with a Pakistani waitress he met in a sheesha bar, and he didn't turn up for breakfast at our hotel the next morning. Last we heard she'd whisked him away up to her family's village in the north and he was preparing to fight against the TTP. Ain't love grand? Several days later and we had flown on to India - Bombay (Mumbai) and then Calcutta (Kolkata). This is where we lost Donny, our Mechanic and major sponsor (Donny's Discount Gas). Donny was arrested and thrown into prison for illegal smuggling - Gold, Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms... you name it, Donny was into it. Good help is hard to find! But every cloud has a silver lining ... We were able to hire a new Co-pilot in India - a female first-officer. Rani flew with us from Calcutta to Port Blair (Andamans), then two flights into Indonesia then to Vietnam and China. Last week we arrived in Hong Kong where, unfortunately, we lost Rani - to Cathay Pacific. She broke my heart ... but life goes on. Within an hour we had another suitable First Officer - Mae, who told me she had always dreamed of seeing Texas. I asked her to join us for the rest of our flights - she said "I'd love to" In the next few days we'll be heading over to Japan - one stop in the south before our stop in Yokohama / Tokyo - and then the big ones - across the Pacific, probably next weekend.
