  1. Yep, seen that before, not with the Katana but with several different high detail models in the past. It's connected to FSX using up all the video memory caused by repeatedly changing viewpoint (forcing it to re-render the scene over and over and hence filling the memory quicker) I believe. Since adding HIGHMEMFIX=1 in my cfg I haven't seen it since, and that was more than a year ago!

  2. Hi, guys,

Not strictly Katana related but I only just saw it happen with the Katana. I was on final approach, view in the VC looking straight out down the runway, when suddenly the camera panned itself down and to the right toward the engine instruments. I didn't click/press anything! I panned pack to the runway, and a few minutes later (just over the threshold) it did it again! Really off-putting when you're trying to land in strong wind!! I just use the joystick hat-switch to pan.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  3. Interesting. My sound freeze crashes (also linked to G3d.dll) uaually happened when I was interacting with FSX ATC via the menus. Makes me think the problem is some sort of thread collision - FSX being asked to do too many things at once. I agree with bliksimpie that the "too many things" involve texture loads. The fact that I was having my problems in proximity to Paine VOR leads me to wonder if there isn't some sort of texture corruption at Paine Field.

Most of my sound freeze crashes were in Orbx scenery. A couple were outside of Orbx country, in the Washington, DC area using UTX, GEX and Cloud 9 landclass. The heavy load in those cases came from weather - significant thunderstorm activity.

I've been too distracted by a string of real-life obligations to test the Katana in Orbx, but I'll try and see if I run into similar problems.

These sound freeze crashes you talk about, are they the kind where you get a Not Responding message and you have to close it with the task manager? If so, i've found that with those errors often you can wait them out (couple of minutes to a maximum of about 10) and eventually they'll disappear and the flight will carry on as normal. Happened to me when flying the PMDG 747-400 on a long haul. 2 hours in and I get a Not Responding message. I let it sit there for a few minutes and sure enough it eventually cleared on its own and the sim resumed like nothing ever happened!

  4. Me too, no CTD and no high CHT this time...;-)

Btw, is it possible, that it has also something to do with using time acceleration?

    Cheers, Stephan

Not sure, i've never used time acceleration. I think it's mostly down to graphics memory exhaustion. With high levels of autogen in OrbX, it almost pushes my PC to breaking point. The first sign is low FPS and stutters. If you push it even harder, eventually you'll run out of memory and that causes the CTD.

  5. It's still there, but I have to zoom in further to see it. Not really a huge issue because I'd never need to zoom in that far really anyway. Weirdly it only happens on the ground. Do you see it too?

    Thanks,

    Tom

  6. Hi,

Not completely Katana related as this happens with some other aircraft too including default, but just wondered if anyone else sees what I see at high levels of zoom in the virtual cockpit?

In each you can see a strip of ground texture bleeding through the cockpit!

  7. I don't think i've ever used the landing light!! On a bright and sunny VFR day you just don't need it, the flashing strobes are enough for you to be seen. The aircraft I fly have an orange anti-collision beacon on the tail too but the Katana doesn't have this fitted. The only time I would ever use the landing light is when i'm landing in limited visability or at night. The landing lights fitted to light aircraft are nowhere near as bright and effective as those fitted to airliners, in the daylight from a distance you would hardly be able to tell whether it was switched on or not!

  8. Yep i'd say you're losing engine power due to carb ice. My flying instructor is really quite hot on the use of carb heat, i've always been taught to check it every 10 minutes or so whilst cruising along and to put it on when reducing power for a descent. FSX does over-exaggerate carb icing but it's a very common source of engine failure in the real world too.

    Tom

  9. It's common practice for airline pilots to leave their landing lights on until passing 10000ft. This isn't an airliner though, so it's unnecessary to have your landing light on unless you're landing. My flying club (in R/L) gets quite annoyed at people who use the landing lights on their aircraft unneccessarily, as the bulbs tend to go quickly and they're expensive to replace!

  10. Hi,

I absolutely love this add on! It is without doubt the best GA aircraft add on I've ever bought (and I've got quite a few)! The detail and the whole concept of a 'living aircraft' that maintains it's state throughout it's life adds to a completely new and highly immersive experience for me in Flight Sim!

I have a quick question. I'm used to flying Warriors in R/L, which of course have a mixture control. The procedure for shutting down the engine is to pull the mixture back to cut off and the engine will be starved of fuel and stall. Never do we turn it off by simply turning the mag switch off. As the Katana doesn't have a mixture lever, I assume the only way to turn the engine off is to turn the key off? Am I correct?

    Kind regards,

    Tom

  11. Hi,

I've done the same and have got it to fly pretty much level with no stick movement now. Looking at the aircraft from behind, you want to bend the right aileron tab upwards slightly and the left tab downward slightly. Keep it very small - you'll notice if you look out the window at what the ailerons do when you move the stick to roll into a bank, they don't move much to give quite a fast roll rate, so make the adjustment tiny. You can only do it on the ground so you may have to do a couple of circuits to get it absolutely right!

    Tom

  12. I was wondering this too. Thanks for the info. Is the proper way to shut down one of these engines to simply turn the key off then? I ask because as a Warrior pilot this is a big no-no - you should always lean the mixture right off and starve it of fuel! :D

    Tom Wright

  13. Hi,

I bought this add on this morning and had a little fly and it's brilliant! The level of fidelity and attention to detail is amazing. After taking her for a short flight and covering the windscreen with oil as I left the oil cap off (oops!), I noticed when i'd landed and the throttle was at idle that there was a red Gen light on the panel. It went away when I increased the throttle a little. What have I done wrong or is that just an aircraft quirk (like in the Warriors I fly in RL the Vac light illuminates at very low power)?! :D

    Thanks,

    Tom Wright

  14. I had this and thought it was a conflict with JF's VFR Real Scenery, so I bought Gen X and the problem persisted. I eventually found that it is a conflict with VFR Airfields, even with LCY disabled in that. The way to get round it is to disable the London X LCY airport and use the one from VFR Airfields. The level of detail is similar. You might need to check 'disable base image' in the VFR Airfields configuration for LCY to avoid other texture problems.

    Regards,

    Tom

  15. Hi,

The London scenery is on top, with the LCY airport scenery right at the very top. VFR Real Scenery is quite far down the list. I think what i'm going to do is ditch the VFR Real Scenery and get the Horizons Gen X one, as all the colours in most addon airports and the London scenery match that one better.

    Regards,

    Tom

  16. Hi Shawn,

I've just disabled my Just Flight VFR Real Scenery for the South East and it sorted the problem. This must mean it is a conflict between the London X scenery and the JF VFRRS scenery. Whilst this technically has solved the problem for the London area, it now means I have no scenery (other than default) for the rest of the South East, which isn't really ideal. Are there any ways of making the two work together? Would it be worth picking up a cheap copy of VFR Gen X Volume 1 instead of the JF scenery, which i've seen available for under £20 somewhere?

    Regards,

    Tom

  17. Hello!

Purchased the aforementioned scenery package this morning and am having a problem with the airport textures at London City Airport, as can be seen in the following picture:

    2009-12-27_18-9-54-803.jpg

As you can see, the ground texture immediately surrounding the aircraft appears an 'earthy' colour. As the aircraft is moved, or the camera is panned, this effect moves causing a 'flickering' effect, and follows the aircraft or camera. It doesn't happen over the whole runway, only the threshold and some parts further along.

At first I thought this may be because of the ordering of the scenery in the FSX scenery library, as I also have Just Flight's VFR Real Scenery installed and UK2000's VFR Airfields, but it all appears to be set up right with the London Scenery on top, with LCY airport right at the very top. I've also disabled the UK2000 LCY airport so it doesn't conflict. I also have all the display settings set up as instructed to in the user's guide included with the product.

Any suggestions on what is otherwise a brilliant piece of scenery?

    Thanks,

    Tom
