F-14 Status Update

Sebastian,

Bio's video is great, and I'm genuinely happy you shared it. I also wouldn't call your request a "stupid video", the concept is actually appealing.

The biggest issue with the F-14 is that it's such a complex bird, there will always be more features of interest than we will actually have the capacity to implement. We have to pick and choose what efforts to pursue based on the technical resources at hand, the time available, and what we perceive will have the greatest end user impact. It's a tough balance.

Best,

John

Dear Developer(s)

i've been a huge F-14 fan since I was a little kid. Spent countless hours playing Fleet Defender, and have been dreaming of a similar experience ever since. I own both the Iris and Dino's Tomcat, but it was your baby that made my childhood dream come true.

Amazing work...the fm is very believeable, the graphics are spot on, the user interface is extremely well designed. Not to mention the Kitty Hawk scenarios.  This+tacpack+vlso, and I'm hooked on my pc again like when i was a kid.

I see that you are still devoting your time to fine tune and polish this gem. Well, my hats off to you, and thanks!!!

Just a quick question regarding the TACAN, does this mean the TACAN will be able to connect to tankers and carriers spawned by Tacpack?

@ Refelcted: Thank you for the kind words, really.

@Peter: That is correct!

looking forward to the update, thanks for working thru issues and personnel changes.

Fantastic, it i was always a little worried about losing connection to the carriers, and being somewhat dissapointed when the TACAN didn't comply.

I think this will be one of the biggest fixes for me

I especially registered for asking this question:

My mates and i are waiting since YEARS and Years, for a nice shared cockpit platform on a combat flight simulator.

So my question:

Will this update include multiplayer working RIO and Pilot seats? So the RIO actually has something to do, use radar and weapon systems, while the friend is mainly flying the plane?

KraziPilot,

The list of bugfixes/features can be found here

In addition to that the TACAN system should be functional in multiplayer now.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply Wingmate,

but me as beeing a newbie in Fighter Planes for FSX, i dont really know what that all means?

Is it possible to have full functional shared cockpit in the f14 now already?  Because i cannot read too much about it in the changelog for the new version.

As i said, for us it would be only interesting if we can go pilot / RIO in the same plane, and actually have some action, engage targets eg.

RIO should control especially radar and the advanced weapon systems, can anyone confirm this is possible now already or will be possible in new version?

Would be willing to buy this and as far as i heared also smth like tacpack would be needed, right?

p.s @wingmate:  your link in your signature picture is wrong, it leads to www.milARIsim.com  instead of www.milAIRsim.com :P

KraziPilot,

Shared cockpit functionality is not on the list. Hopefully we will see it some day, but I am much more excited for the TARPS and LANTRIN pod functionality.

If I recall correctly shared cockpit does not work because some of the gauges don't sync properly between clients.

Tacpack is required for weapons functionality and for the TCS pod to work, systems like the radar should be functional without tacpack.

Cheers

Thanks for the answer.. so i have to wait againlonger for DCS F14 from leatherneck i think :(:(

So wait, acutally this what a guy called: "jcagle" said, didnt happen?

The biggest new feature that we'll try to implement is Shared Cockpit, but it's tricky with all the custom variables, and we won't confirm it as a features until it's actually working.

Sure, but this is not official and isn't fully comprehensive. There are a couple of visual additions that haven't been added to the list, and won't until they are in place. Also, there are two big request items that will not make it into the SP, TacPack TACAN integration (described here) and Shared Cockpit. We want to state this up front so there are established expectations (good and bad).

The first part of this statement has been rectified, but shared cockpit is still off the list for the next SP.

As a slight expansion on the above. There are too many local or custom L:vars in the F-14 to be transmitted effectively in a shared cockpit environment. So we'll need to both crop certain functions (Auto-Checklist is a big candidate) and then explicitly manage the remaining variables.

When you start taking a hacksaw to 40,000 lines of code, you really want to be sure that you're done adding to the pile. All things considered, the RIO pit didn't seem ready for that. So with the next service pack, the RIO pit will come alive, and by that I mean you'll be be able to use your joystick (or buttons) as input for all four modes of RIO stick operation. Radar target selection (TID is mode 1 and DDD is mode 2), Radar steering, and TCS/LANTIRN slewing. TCS independent, slaved to the RADAR and vice versa (i.e. RADAR slaved to TCS). TARPS DI is implement along with the LANTIRN pod having both area mode (static GPS) designate and point mode (moving AI) designate. LANTIRN will also have an A/A track mode (just like the real deal), but of course you won't be able to designate in that mode.

With those features in place....now it makes sense to think about shared cockpit. And I mean think about it. I'll be in a hole and be able to offer support only for 4-6 months while finishing a degree once this SP is released.

In P3D, the LANTIRN will also have LM's Pseudo IR display, which means you'll be able to see moving tracks even in low visibility (below).

It is looking really nice John.

That pseudo IR is making want to go get tacpack for P3D.

This may be a stupid question I didn't get it explicitly answered, but will we have laser guided bomb capability?

This one jsut shows laser instead of training mode, so I am a little intrigued.

Thanks

Although the LANTIRN implementation looks really cool.

Track = LANTIRN follows an IR signature; Designate = Laser Target Designation that's used to guide ordnance. From above, you'll be able to track and designate static GPS coordinates as well as moving ground AI targets (some limits apply to this one), and only be able to track A/A targets.

It's a long shot, but there isn't a vf-213 paint yet, is it possible one could be included in the next sp?

Just wanted to confirm this is P3D only? In the current FSX TP version tracking a moving AI vehicle is not possible yet. Each day I realize I am heading towards the upgrade, meaning new cpu.

peter, did you try to reach out to the current painters?

I am fairly certain that you can track vehicles in the VRS bug with FLIR in FSX.

I would like to say if the update takes some more time that you need to take all the time you need to get it right and not try to kill your self

Well I just remember that it was mentioned that they had done 4 out of the six planned paints, and I wondered whether vf-213 was an idea

6 out of 6 paints are finished, we just showed four of them in the preview thread.

This is a genuine statement, and not intended to be smart-assy, but there is a 100% chance you getting a VF-213 if you get photoshop and paint it yourself. I say that because, in 19 of 20 FS projects I helped develop, I was a flight modeler first and occasionally a flight systems coder. At one point I realized the only way to see an F-14 the I really wanted in FSX was to step forward as project lead and assemble a team.

Even if it ultimately doesn't see inclusion as an official patch item, I really admire people like  edakridge1, who see a gap and then try to fill it.

A True word! I for one recently started programming XML gauges to enhance the freeware Tu-144 the orginal developer sadly no longer works on.

Doing it yourself is sometimes the best way, if you have the resources of course.
