Cheyenne Chief Pilot 829
It's carrying a spare engine, brought to/from/for maintenance. It's considered freight that doesn't fit into the cargo compartments. Increase in drag and fuel consumption and effects on flight characteristics are way less than what someone might expect. Patrick1246 353
On Monday night the QANTAS flight to Sydney had an engine blow up about an hour after taking off from KSFO. The B747 returned safely to San Francisco, flying with 3 engines operating. On Wednesday the QANTAS flight arrived carrying a replacement engine under the port wing. The B747 which ferried the new engine to SFO from Sydney was towed to the Superbay. It took only a couple of hours for mechanics to remove the engine from the ferry aircraft for installation on the plane from Monday's flight. (It was a hot day at SFO as you can see from the heat haze in the above photo.) http://visionsofairliners.blogspot.ch/2010/09/qantas-5-engines.html

Deputy Sheriffs Jeroen Doorman 1763 Posted May 23, 2014 Deputy Sheriffs Share Posted May 23, 2014 Why is the inside engine not using it's reverse thrust on the first picture? Did they turn that off because of the spare engine being so close to the other?
Cheyenne Chief Pilot 829
More photos in the middle of the page here: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/3031408/ Wikipedia says every 747 can be equipped that way, but I doubt every 747 actually is prepared for that. There are also different statements on how frequent the engine ferrying occurs: Some sources say it's not rare, others state it hardly ever occurs. iPetroSS 542
Nice! I wonder if the aircraft keeps banking to the left due to the extra weight of the engine.
