Alaska touring...

Recommended Posts

Here are a bunch of shots that I took today as I continue my tour:-

Continuing on from Juneau Airport I dropped into Juneau Harbour which has a seaplane landing area.

Taking off again to do a fly around...

atour03.jpg

...crossing the container port...

atour04.jpg

...and passing the little town on my left (Juneau)...

atour05.jpg

...and here is one of the two marinas.

atour06.jpg

Setting course now for my next port of call.

atour07.jpg

The direct way to it is mountainous so I am climbing.

atour08.jpg

Cresting a ridge I start a dive back down towards my objective.

atour09.jpg

There is the runway ahead, jutting out into the water.

atour10.jpg

I'm still diving as I enter a left base for a tight left turn...

atour11.jpg

...onto the runway.

atour12.jpg

Down safely and coasting to a stop.

atour13.jpg

This place is called Snettisham (same name as a place in England where I used to go to Motor Racing School!).

atour14.jpg

Taking off again and...

atour15.jpg

...setting off for a place called Taku Lodge.

atour16.jpg

That glacier is not named on my map.

atour17TakuLodge.jpg

Taku Lodge had me fooled a bit...when I got directly over it on the map, there was only water with a few sand bars. I landed on one of the sand bars and then zoomed in fully on the map...The red symbol on the map then showed an anchor. So Taku Lodge is an anchorage. I taxied back into the water, lifted my gear and taxied to the correct position. However the anchorage has a nice beach so I lowered the gear again and beached the Icon to leave till tomorrow's tour.

Thanks for looking :)

Today, I moved from Taku Lodge to Taku Harbour...About a half hour flight. I beached the Icon there and took a few photos of it:-

Beached at Taku Harbour which in a well protected inlet.

The exit from the harbour is to the left of this picture.

The rest of these shots are devoted to my favourite Icon.

atour21.jpg

Note the "Sawtooth" leading edge...Exactly like the later marks of Hunter. Note also the many differing shapes of the pine trees.

atour22.jpg

The tail design.

atour23.jpg

The propeller follows the modern fashion of having the most curved edge as the leading edge rather than the older trailing edge.

atour24.jpg

The cockpit with instrumentation that is designed for VFR flight.

atour25.jpg

The very large opening canopy makes it easier to get in and out.

A central view of the panel and controls.

Thanks for looking :)

Here is the Carbon Cub that comes included in the Alaska Pack...I look forward to flying it when it has its Virtual Cockpit, which I believe will shortly be offered for download:-
