Niagara Falls

Hello,

After seeing screens on a forum, I bought this scene for these magnificent waterfalls.

But after installation, I am disappointed because my waterfalls are masked behind splash, in spite of the introduction of the two files " .fx " as shown in the PDF manual. These splashes was not so importants on the screens that I had seen and it was very nice.

What can I do to see the waterfalls without all those splashes who hide them.

Thanks in advance.

Nadine.

PS: When I fly very near of the waterfalls, my FPS drops dramatically (until 8 FPS) while I am normally at 30.

Here is my screens, with the two modified files .fx, as shown in the manual :

Hello Shaun,

These are the screens that I saw on a french forum, there is much less of a splash, we see better the falls, it's much prettier. That's what I would get :

And even on the first screens of Sasa here, it was also already better than on my screens :

In the manual it says that if we want less of a splash, just replace two files in the folder "effects" by two other files provided with the scene. I have installed them in replacement the original files, but it changed nothing.

Hi Nadine,

my guess would be that this is something video card/driver related. Looks like the driver can't loop the effect properly and therefore doesn't let the old splash fade out properly before new one comes up. Do you have the DX10 preview activated by chance?

Can you make a screenshot at the same location to make sure there is really no difference between both FX sets? Here's the difference between both sets as it looks on my system:

Sasa Hello and thank you for your attention to my problem :)

I do not use the Direct 10 preview.

The video driver I'm using is the 296.10

Here are two screenshots I just take, the first with the FX files default and the second with FX modified files :

Looks like your video card handles the same effect sizes different than mine. Anyway: Give it another try with attached FX files.

If the files are the same then it might be how your graphics card is displaying it.

Hello,

My graphics card is a graphics card "normal" and recent (see my signature), so why didn't it display properly and as for other users ?

Hello all,

I also experience this issue.. both the effect file in the installation, and the one that was suggested as a fix in this thread gave me the same results.. almost the same configuration.. cept its a 560ti.

We have seen more often that certain card/drivers display effects different. Sometimes is helps if the FPS is higher (but I read 30 fps and that should be more then enough), sometimes not. We have asked Microsoft for some help on this last year but they were not willing to check it out. For now we have to write this down as FSX bug.

Perhaps Sascha has some more ideas, but the smaller and even smaller effects seem to make no difference.

I haven't tried this myself. But trying to lower amount of splashes created per second might help here, given that FPS might be an issue. Let me know if this looks any different.

Hello Sasha,

I tried the new files, but the result is not pretty at all, it's like an opaque curtain on falling water.

Thank you for have trying to remedy my problem.

My FPS are not especially low, they are at 30 because limited to 30 in my FSX. They become low only if I'm really very very near the waterfalls.

Here are 3 shots :

Hi!

Just checked it on my notebook, which has a completely different video card. Even there I couldn't reproduce that kind of whitewash. Could it be possible that you both have some addons installed that change how FSX deals with effects. Like GEX and many others, who knows it that could be the source.

Well, in that case we would have one possible canidate with REX. I don't know though if it's possible to deactivate so easily for testing...

Hello,

The problem comes not from REX, because the person who took the very pretty shots of the falls, which I put the links in post # 3, has also REX.

I am really sure that it is an issue of the graphics card and driver combination. We seen these problem with other projects as well (though not as strong). In these case I have also never seen it solved and I have never found out if there was a specific driver/card combination that causes it.

Well thats a bummer.. no problem.. I guess I'll just live with it.. as the rest of the scenery is just fantastic! Its a shame though that it couldn't be solved easily. I'll have to check it out again after a new driver update or the like.

Oh yea... thanks for the free wing.. very generous of Aerosoft that is for certain.
