What's best only for FSX ??

I have seen this!

Keep in mind, with current sims and their preference for multiple cores, the i7 is more future-proof, as the i5 is not planned to go beyond four cores. (though there will certainly be speed updates)

Hi guys,

Long time since i have been active on the forum, i'm having some questions about well... hardware, new pc, etc... so i'm using this topic if i may.

Ive been using fsx several years now with a medium pc, it's not the best pc ever but it satisfied me very much considering the fact that i'm also using REX, pmgd, aersoft add-ons.

Here are the components of my current pc(bought in 2008):

amd quad core processor 2.2 ghz

3 GB DDR2 memory

an asus motherboard

2 x 500 GB HDD (even after 3 years only 300 GB is in use)

Nvidia geforce 8800 GT 512 mb

dvd reader

dvd writer

15 in 1 card reader

320 GB HD personal media drive

this setup works fine most of the time, stil running on vista so now and then some memory leak errors, working on a 32bit system etc... The 320 GB HDD still can be used with my next pc.

by reading other similar topics around here there's no need to spend a lot of money, so something around 1200€ should do fine to build a new pc, i'm planning to let the guys from alternate.be building one for me.

This is what i plan on getting into my new system

case

i7-2600

motherboard

8 GB DDR3 memory (corsair 2x4 gb)

1TB HDD

60 or 120 GB SSD

DVD rw station

nvidia geforce GTX 560TI (by asus)

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

But now i have a bunch of questions, i'm not the overclocking guy, so should i stay with the i7-2600 or is it worth the money and take the i7-2700 instead? i still have some month's to spare plan on buying it this summer.

The memory, should i take corsair or kingston hyper X or G skill?

Hard disk, 1 TB is more then enough but wich brand and wich one?

SSD, same story how much and wich brand? so hard to choose.

Graphic card, i'm staying with the GTX 560TI but what is the difirence between those to: ENGTX560 Ti DCII/2DI & ENGTX560 Ti DCII TOP/2DI

A case wich don't have much lights, just everything it needs...

what power? and what cooling for the processor?

And last but not least the motherboard, i want a decent but payable motherboard let's say keep it under 200€ please, don't have a clue what to pick?

Sorry for all the questions that i have but i wanna do it right this time.

thanks in advance

kind regards

nick

Hi Nick,

I assume that if you write i7-2600 you mean i7-2600K. That´s a nice decission but if you want you could also save a bit more money if you´d choose the i5-2500k isntead. It´ll oc as good as the i7 but will be 100€ lighter.

But if you say you can wait some time, I´d get the i5-2500k if you can´t really hold it and check whether you´d like to get an Ivy Bridge CPU which will be released this year.

I would go for an i5-2500k. It´s correct that the i7 is more future-proof but as not better Fs than FSX in sight, the i5 should be more than suffice for that job.

I think that i5 is fine for FSX for now, but there are other Sims than FSX, and it seems that some will appreciate those extra cores.

If the main concern is just for FSX however, and only FSX, I would agree with the i5. I just think that with XP10 and FLIGHT and who knows what else on the way, I find myself hesitant to commit to i5 (knowing they intend to stick with 4 cores and no Hyper-threading) only to find I have changed my mind later.

Everyone will have to look carefully at their budget and what other things they wish to use their machines for.

Tell ya' what, though!

I am going to use your criteria, and see what I would purchase right now, from my preferred venue(s) if that was what I was looking for.

Case: $149.99 http://www.tigerdire...500855&csid=_21

Why such a pricey case? Several reasons. 1st is that its the last case you need ever buy, its a case for the ages as far as build quality. 2nd is cooling. You will never find a case better designed to cool modern computer components. 3rd is size: room to work without sliced knuckles, cursing or drama. 4th Is cable management. Look at the pics of the case to see what I mean. 5th Is lack of bling. This case will always be "in style" 6th Is massive room for further expansion, Plus fan speed controls. The sideways "tool free" drive bays also leave more room for today's massively long graphics cards. I also like the honking big opening that allows the installation/replacement of cooling solutions without removing the entire motherboard!

Motherboard: $129.99 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813128502 Pluses are that its cheap and Gigabyte is a good company. The board will also support PCIE 3.0 graphics cards and ivory bridge CPU's, so there is some future-proofing. Good overclocking features Through UEFI. Too bad quad channel ram is not an LGA 1155 feature!! 10% off with promo code GAMB210216 Limited offer

Processor: $299 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115071 Nice processor, good price, easy overclock. (you could save about $5 dollars at amazon. I also assume on-chip graphics is not something you strongly care about)

Graphics Card: $199.00 with rebate card. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130623 Boy! Its hard to stay within your budget, with all the stuff you want! This is chosen per your stated desire and price. This the 384 core version. There are now 448 core enthusiast (limited numbers) versions that are the new sexy for tech weenies.

Memory: $74.00 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820226179 Chosen for price, CAS latency and favorable reviews.

Hard Drive: $129.99 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136284 Customer choice award winner. 7200 RPM, 32Mb cache.

Power!: $94.00 with mail in rebate http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139021 5 year warranty is in keeping with the theme of very nice things on a budget! (modular versions are available for a bit more)

Windows: $100.00 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16832116986 OEM with a free copy of parallels 6 OEM

Cooling: $69.99 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835181015 always a nice option, and has a high "tech-nerd" factor. :P

CD/DVD: $17.99 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827106289 LiteOn drives are known for "versatility"

SSD!: I part company with you here, as FSX is more than happy with a hybrid drive which costs much less.

Total cost so far: $1262.96 US which is about 961 Euros or 805 Pounds I think

You could also save a lot just by getting a cheaper case (and less fancy cooling) but I like my nice cases!! :P

I hope this is a useful template, to help with your own eventual decisions.
