Recommended Posts

Finally managed to get the show on the road! A lot of work to do around here to get back to EAFS on time, but I'll get to it!

Not too bad a score for starters, but I hear the competition is tough (incredible scores being attained)!

Good flying everyone!

Goodness gracious... This airport is a tricky one! I almost got on the wrong runway (on the big airport next door)! Then on final approach I had buildings making it impossible for the ideal FSFS glideslope... go around....

Believe-me, it was trouble this one....

Another score which I consider below par, but that another flight in the bag!

I'm hoping very badly to leave this part of the world soon... Terribly hazy and foggy conditions, making every flight from and to field without instrument approaches a nightmare. I must say I've violated minima twice already... Some spiky situations... Thankfully I was on the right place and managed to land well...

Missing Europe with all its problems! :mecry_s:

Here it goes, the final solitary flight of our journey!

Naturally, out of the many ordeals undergone through the extraordinary days rounding the world, I would qualify this last leg certainly on the top 3, and maybe even the most challenging.

After departing Wien in winds of 22G30, i had planned a Z flightplan (VFR-IFR) direct to the RASTA intersection where I should arrive on marginal VFR @ FL150 and switch to IFR into LOWI.

The thing is, long before that, I was already totally envelopped by clouds. Thad wouldn't have been a problem on itself since that altitude would keep me safe from the mountains in the Arlberg, but those clouds, they were really nasty buggers, full of cold moist and ice. As a result, my Baron 58 started accumulating too much of it to the point it would stop flying and its protection mechanisms were not enough.

I had to descend and ask for rerouting.

At about FL100 things improved a lot, so I got cleared to proceed direct to Salzburg, from where I could avoid the most mountainous areas and fly at 9.500ft direct to the IAF at Rattenburg. From there, you know the drill, offset ILS to decision height which for me on this flight was 850AGL because I needed to be able to turn off the ILS and switch FSFS to approach mode before the 500ft. Otherwise the scoring would have been even more miserable...

The near zero visibility gave away at 1.000ft, from where I could see the approach lights, and managed to land sucessfully, but of course with 35kts gusts and one that had to come right on the flare to get me a "balooning" penalty...

Well whatever.

Anyway, it was a nice (part) finale to this adventure.

Congratulations to all of those who made it back home! What a feat! :clapping_s::hi_s:
