Gonçalo's Phase 3 Scores

Recommended Posts

So today I finally managed to kickstart pahse 3... and what a day I chose!!!

This was the METAR for Dutch Harbor:

PADU 052251Z 33019G31KT 10SM OVC015 10/07 A2927 RMK AO2 PK WND 01038/2202 RAE48

For the hole trip I had to fly manual since the Sperry autopilot was unable to control the aircraft under the sever turbulence and gusts encountered. Upon arrival to Nikolsy a beautiful 330/36 wind was expecting me, wich is crazy for a 260 QFU runway...

Hence Mr. Smith complained a lot, and I was delighted to see him head sunk in the sick bag for the entire journey! Thanks God for small things! As expected, scores were mmiserable, and I got the magnificent off the runway penalty. Truth is the approach was miserable confortwise, but touchdown was ON the runway...

Anyway, here is the score:

With the weather a bit more clement for this second leg, scored improved a tad, but still far below those from Phase 2. I need to re-learn "FSFS"...

I've done 5 legs so far and had some bad winds on all of them, until arriving at UHPP with "winds calm" being listed in FS. I do find it somewhat irritating that our instructirs don't give us any leeway for rough weather... the aircraft is being tossed around like a leaf in a gale and we're getting warnings about rough turns, steep bank angles... and we're sweating buckets fighting the controls trying to keep on course - that has been my experience so far this phase....

that has been my experience so far this phase....

Likewise Ian. Namely on the DC3 that becomes very unstable in unsettled conditions, and you havo to fly it by hand to prevent the AP from going crazy!

And more, ie. on my last flight the late rotation was on purpose. If you have wind 22G40, you definitely push that Vr up so that you don't stall after takeoff. The guy disagrees...

Anyway, like I told Lars on the main topic, I stopped being frustrated with this!

I'm now flying the B58 towards ATU, ETA in about 1 hour. Waiting to see what the little guy has to say about his one!

Another appaling rating by Mr. Smith. UHPP doesn't have an offest localizer, however it was completely off the runway.

Did anyone else notice that?

This was an extremely difficult flight weather wise. Had moderate/heavy turbulence on takeoff, decreasing slightly at altitude, only to come back with a vengeance on approach.

Arriving at ROTM I experienced Heavy/Severe turbulence and gusty winds 25/35kts 90º with runway QFU!!! Had to go around first time, only to suceed at the second attempt.

All things considered, this was a very good score!

Well, I must say I had expected this outcome... FSFS is unable to appreciate the crazy landing at Kai Tak.

Since the visibility was great (runway in sight nearly at SL), I chose to set OBS to 130 and perform a visual approach. Made sure the NAV was tuned to something else...

Anyway, since you fly past terrain and building lower than 500 ft, Mr. Whittle gets very confused.. Hence the poor remarks!

Nevertheless, this Phase 3 was a lot of fun even despite the very poor scores!

      Flight included the following problems:

[*]Steep banking - save your aerobatic flying for some other time.

[*]Rapid descent - dangerous and uncomfortable.

[*]Narrowly missed obstacles - plan your safety altitudes.
