On your version registration 73-78 which is shown on the tail boom what do they mean? are they some form of group markings? And is it correct to only have one showing (78) on the nose and no 73. Timm Hi Timm, all those issues are correct! All German armed forces UH-1D helicopters are marked 71+37 to 73+84, some exeptions included (i.e. 70+01, 70+02, 98+98 and 98+89) The two numbers painted on the battery acces hatch represent the last two numbers of the helicopters registrations. Those numbers may vary from unit to unit. I.e. some paint also the second digit before those numbers like " 3 78". The first two numbers represent the aircraft type, those do never change except there are really different versions of one type in the fleet, or there are just not enough numbers. And the numbers behind the "cross" represent the actual aircraft. For example the new A319s of German Airforce are 15+01 and 15+02 while all aircraft that would wear 15+XX would be A319s. In addition, the 96+, 97+, 98+, 99+ sequences are test registrations so allocated to a variety of types and often used more than once. In addition, a small handful of types (e.g. the EC.135: 8251) do not wear the first two in front of the cross and the last two after it.
