Engine start up

Hello,

so what i expected last flights and this problem have i located after buying: Engine start up work right, EGT is slowly rising and stabilized. I can hear the deep sound of engine start. Then i start the other one, EGT go up quickly and i can't hear deep sound of engine start up. If i watch on N2 and wait to 20% and kick cutoff in. So whats up there?

Hi Swen,

Can you please let me know what the problem is ?

Are you saying that engine 2 doesn't start ? Or do you mean that the EGT rises too quickly at start-up. In case of the latter, the problem is related to the FSX start-up protocol. I've tried to get this to work correctly but at looks like we have no control over how FSX starts the engines, or at least over the EGT output...

That is exactly what i mean. I dont like to talk from other developer, but there work this fine... But there is sometime engine start up sound sometime not.

If engine no 1 start the start up sound is missing. I engine 2 starts sound is there. I mean this "wwwoooooooooo" :). Sorry its very difficult to explain it. Watch the Video. :)

Hi Swen,

I did a few tries and the combustion sound is there at start-up, but FSX sometimes gives a crazy start-up with EGT peaking at > 800° while the next engine may do a normal engine start. Both use the exact same code ! Anyway, I decided to fake the whole start-up sequence like some others do because FSX messes up badly sometimes.

I can add the combustion sound to a gauge and play it "manually" but then there could be an issue with the volume of the sound. If you set your engine sounds to very loud then the combustio will sound too quiet when you sent engine sound to very quiet then the combustion sound will be too loud...

Hello Björn,

thanks for your statement! But you can hear that there's no sound at No1. :( Sometimes i dont get any cumbustio sound.

OK, but i haven't any experience to help you out. :)

Hi Swen,

I checked the movie you made and the engine sounds you get are different from what I get! I have seen a few postings on various forums about sound files not being played properly on some computers based on the file names of the sound files used! Maybe is the reason for the problems?

Are you using DX9 or DX10? Can you tell me your FSX sound settings so I can maybe recreate the same settings that you have.

When I do an engine start but combustions sound are played with no issues so I have not been able to recreate this. Also after start-up you seem to have a more or less silent "silent" phase for engine 1 where I have a jet whine sound peak due to the high N2 values that sometimes occur when you start-up an engine in FSX!

So i use DX9.

Björn, i drive crazy with sound.

Next Video for you. Check N1 rotation Engine 1 and look after this to N1 rotation Engine 2.

http://www.sej.de/movdat/a300startup2.flv

Funny hm? But you can now hear both engine startcomb. Ok so i stop all. Start again. Same fault, but startcomb works. So i try some times and the startcomb works. After 4-5 times startcomb wont work.

http://www.sej.de/movdat/a300startup3.flv

At this stage, Engine 1 N1 drives so high. I cut this i show you only the engine 2 start. I'Ve changed the outside temp to check this fault, but nothing change.

After next start of fsx i have another states of engine starts... This is a lottery game. :)

Hi,

Imagine how crazy that makes me !

The start-up code for engine 1 and 2 is exactly the same (in fact you have almost no control over the engine start process in FS). Sometimes N2 peaks at 100% after engine start, the next time it goes up very smoothly almost like it should be in reality. Again with the exact same code !

So I decided to hide the real indications and write my own engine instrument indications for the start-up, but the sound is not something I have control over :(

I've set my sound in windows 7 to 44,1khz now. I hope that this will be a solution for sound. I will try it next times and get you an information about it.

Björn

Hi Bjorn,

First off.....great a/c...one of the best for FSX that there is. I understand what you say about the EGT rise, and it is an FSX problem as correctly stated. Even FS9 has this issue. But somehow, LDS767 and the PMDG 747/MD11 do seem to have smoothed this hurdle to a large extent. These aircraft have a far more gradual rise in EGT than compared to others, even the A300. But at the same time, I love the delay in EGT rise (after raising the start levers) that you have been able to model :). It has been many years since I was in an A300 cockpit, and if I recall correctly, the procedure was 15% N1, start levers on and if I recall it was 11 seconds timing for EGT rise. Do correct me if I am wrong.

Another question I have is that on the AFDS panel. You have modeled the VS as a pitch mode for the AFDS. If I once again remember, this thumb wheel used to set safe pitch, the aircraft's of Indian Airlines did not have a VS function. Was this added by Airbus to later aircraft? Or have you not modeled safe pitch, and used that to model VS instead. Just curious :)

Thanks once again for a brilliant simulation :)

Dinshaw.

I've been studying some of the other aircraft start-up sequences and what they have done (and what I will also be doing in SP2) is fake the instrument read-outs. When you check the actual N1-N2-FF-EGT in any of these aircraft you will see they have the exact same issues, but the instruments simply give you a fake number that is much more realistic. Don't always believe what you see ;) I have been looking at videos and talking to pilots to time the exact duration of a normal start-up sequence. In FSX you end up with approx 30 seconds and a destroyed engine :) in reality the start-up takes 1min to 1min10s and the rise in N2, N1 and EGT is very gradual.

Regarding VSPD mode, I'm not sure if I have ever seen an A300B4-200 panel without VSPD mode, how would you climb at a set rate then ? Or would you have to be in PITCH mode and set the aircraft pitch manually ? There are not that many options for climbing or descending in the A300 you have VSPD mode and IAS which is in fact a speed mode rather then a climb mode.

In some aircraft the VSPD bar will follow the actual vertical speed (like in the RFP742) in others it won't. There have been panel upgrades for the A300 however. Astar used to have some A300's with a GPS, in their aircraft the VSPD bar followed actual vertical speed when not in VSPD mode, they on the other hand didn't have a V/L mode (no VOR tracking was possible) and when you where climbing in N1, when ALTACQ turned green the autothrottle would automatically switch from N1 to SPD mode. Some aircraft also had a B/B (backbeam) options which is basically a LOC mode but with reversed reactions. As far as I know however pilots are not allowed to use this mode because it can cause confusion in the cockpit and has led to serious incidents in the past.

But these are upgrades and options and where not part of the original aircraft set-up.

Hi Björn,

I have been experiencing a similar sound issue with engine starts. On starting Eng 1 I get the spool up sound and on Eng 2 I get no spool up sound. This has been repeatable over the 4 flights I've done thus far and affects Eng 2 regardless of the order in which you start them.

If you need affected users to test any fixes I'm happy to help out, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Looking forward to SP2, in particular if you are planning on simulating a realistic engine start duration. For the reasons you have mentioned, too few FS add-ons get this right!

Dear Bjorn,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, you are right. If I recall, it was N1 and IAS(set to 250K) upto 10,000 feet. After that, disengage the pitch mode(IAS), pitch green would be annunciated on the FMA, and use CWS accelerating to say...300Kts and reengage IAS at the required speed. Once Alt Acq amber changed to Alt Acq green, engage speed mode. I think this was the climb procedure. With regards to descent, I am not sure but initial action was to disengage SPD and reduce speed to around 280 Kts. After speed reduction by bringing throttles back a bit, engage Alt ACQ, the aircraft would then begin a descent in Alt Acq green. Once Alt Acq green changed to Alt Acq amber, slowly retard the throttles to idle and engage IAS at the required speed. But it was many years ago, and I may be wrong. But yes, IC aircraft had no VSPD mode. I think the safe pitch was calculated during the preflight and set. If I recall, it was basically for a single engine performance. I will try and get the details what exactly the setting was used for and how it was used.

If you see this photo, you can see that the aircraft is in descent, but the thumbwheel if used for VSPD is showing a climb. This thumbwheel is set to around 11-12 degrees of pitch attitude and not 1100 or 1200 FPM climb.

With regards to the EGT....WOW....you learn something new everyday ;) But, I am glad you are also using the powers of illusion for SP2. Any time frame, when it would be out? Also, in SP2, can I suggest some tweak or change in the 2D panel viewpoint. It is impossible to see the runway on the final approach.

Cheers,

Dinshaw.
