If "D:\MSFS Packages\Community\aerosoft-vdgs-driver\aerosoft-vdgs-driver.exe" is indeed the correct path to the driver, I see no reason why it should not start automatically. When starting up MSFS, and when in main menu, checking the windows event viewer, do you get any indication that the driver might have crashed?

Unfortunately nothing shows up in the event viewer when I try to activate VDGS. Unless I manually start the .exe file then it works.

Hmm..there was a problem some time ago, when MSFS failed to launch some applications via the exe.xml file, but I thought they had been resolved by Asobo. So far, I can only advise you to continue as you do now, that is starting the driver manually. If anything further comes up in the future, we can come back to the issue.
