Flying to alternate?

Recommended Posts

If flying to alternate becomes necessary, how this is handled in the FMS?
Should the entire route to alernate be entered point by point into the FMS?
Over the existing flight plan? As the secondary flight plan?
Any way to prepare for this before the take-off? As a secondary flight plan?

Whichever option suits you best basically. We get a planned route to the alternate in our flightplan, but it is not unlikely that you'll get a more direct route from ATC when you actually decide to divert.

There is an option to insert it on the last LEGS page I believe, and/or possibly last FPLN page. Or you can prepare the secondary flightplan and activate that once required. I've not had to divert many times yet, and usually what you plan for is not what will happen. So it usually takes time to set up the FMS properly again and clean it up. Most likely you'll get a direct to some waypoint that may or may not be in your alternate flightplan, so you go direct to that point and then start cleaning up the FMS, set alternate arrival and approach etc.

Ok, how is it with flights were it's uncertain what STAR or runway direction to use? Do you often set up two flight plans, one secondary with an 'opposite approach'? Also, how do you handle last minutes changes to takeoff runway, maybe change of windspeed and direction?

We generally put in the FMS what we expect based on latest weather. Any changes are easily made later if needed. It takes just a few seconds to change what is in the FMS and then you might need a few minutes to brief the new plan and recalculate performance, but that’s it.

Same for takeoff, change the plan in the FMS, brief the new plan and make sure performance is correct for the new runway and departure. Does not take very long.
