Around the world in 80 days, if I am ready. XPLANE 11 - SAAB 340A

OK, I have a lot to do just to get to the 25th, plus I am not feeling that well at the moment......excuses.
I will be on XPLANE 11, and I am going to start this in a SAAB 340A but may change this as I go.  If I get to the last leg, I will fly home in a A320 in first class with a glass of fizz in hand (I will have to work out how to fly with a glass of fizz whilst sitting in first class, but that's a problem for later).
Yesterday I positioned to EGLC from EGCC.  I usually fly the SAAB using VORs for navigation but realise that may be a problem in some parts of the world. I also need to work out the route. I probably won't set off until the 26th, but hope to catch everyone up by Suez.

  • cubiter changed the title to Around the world in 80 days, if I am ready. XPLANE 11 - SAAB 340A

I have flown the first two legs today.  I flew into Innsbruck but decided not to stay for a bit of skiiing because the weather forecast for tomorrow morning was not good so I pushed on into Italy (LIBD).  The approach into Innsbruck was fun, flying to a beacon whilst in full cloud before the turn onto final.  Will post some photos later, probably when having some refreshments!

I need to fix my control stick, it has decided to put random inputs in which is a bit scary when flying in the mountains.  I will probably have a day off tomorrow, then continue to Greece on Tuesday.

I think I have fixed my flight controller.  It turns out to have been not enough rudder trim to counteract the twin turboprops.

Tomorrow is LIBD to LGAV or LGSA.  Will decide over coffee tomorrow.

I flew yesterday from LIBD to LGSA, route taken LIBD BCS KRK ARA TRL PLH LIBD, with a distance of 510 nm  and time taken  02:25 hrs.

It was an unventful flight with cloud obscuring most of the ground/sea along the way.  I struggled to see the airport for landing until I was nearly upon it, but I was on the right track following the VOR.

Onwards tomorrow to HEPS

Over Brindisi

Last flight of this stage.  Flew LGSA to HEPS along IRA BRN DBA NOZ.  Flight time was 02:45 hrs for 610nm. There was a good tailwind along the coast.  Not a great landing, and ended up playing in the sand at the side of the runway.  A good job I brought my bucket and spade. A lot of cloud again, but at least I could see the runway this time.    I may swap planes for the next few legs, whilst this one is repaired.

Murky and rainy pulling out of LGSA

Two updates to come today. First flight on Sunday and the second today, Monday

After getting bogged down in the sand at the side of the runway at HEPS, I am proceeding in an EPIC 1000 for the next few legs.  The first leg is from HEPS to OEJN.  The flight took 02:50 and the route was via CVO HGD WEJ YEN RBG JDW.  It was uneventful apart from getting used to the sporty performance compared to the SAAB 340A.

Today's flight was a bit alarming towards the end!  I have been planning to follow the coast down through the Red Sea, turn left/port and on to Oman before heading to Bombay/Mumbai. On this leg, I was planning to go from OEJN to OYAA (Aden).  However the reality is that airport is effectively out of use.  So as I was over HOD (HODEIDAH), I decided to proceed to HDAM (Djibouti), so the route is now OEJN QUN GIZ HDH HDAM.  Tomorrow I will head direct for Oman.  About 100 nm before I decided to descend to 10000 ft for a bit of sight seeing as the land masses narrow.  I hit cloud, lightning and then ice.  All the ice protection was on, but suddenly the trusty PT6 turbine spluttered to almost zero power, and my speed was dropping quickly.  The dials for torque and prop speed were bouncing all over the place.  I dived for 5000 feet, gained speed, and the engine recovered.  I went down again to 3000 feet to get under the cloud to head into HDAM across the Gulf of Aden.  I got down safely and I am trying to understand what happened.  One thing I didn't try was switching on Ignition, a bit like selecting 'Continous' for a larger gas turbine on take-off.

Additionally, whilst at OEJN a 737(?) decided to taxi through me before I departed, and whilst parked at HDAM a fuel tanker decided to drive through my rear fuselage.

What are you doing?

I am a bit behind on reporting in.  I have three flights to cover.

After a few nights rest in Dubai, today's flight was OMDB to OPKC.  I am still flying VOR to VOR where I can, giving a route via FJV MCT CBH KC.  However, the leg from CBH to KC was 396nm, and a strong wind was blowing so I decided to insert some GPS waypoints ( BIVIN, PARET and BEGIM) so as not to drift too far using 'heading' alone.  The flight was 02:35 hrs and 751 nm.

Turning over FJV

And it is the last flight of this stage, OPKC to VABB.  This leg was 509 nm and flown in 01:45 hrs mainly because of a very strong tailwind at 29000 ft. The route was via BHU RKT BVR and SUR.

Time to set off for Calcutta/Kolkata.  This will be done in two stages, heading first for VANP, via SRD AAU NNP.  This short leg of 370 nm took 01:50 hrs, flying in the slower SAAB 340.  After my sand excursion at HEPS it has had a clean out, and a new(!) paint job. I left the hazy air at Mumbai, found clear skies, but approaching VANP it got cloudier.  The metar said 'mist', and I couldnt see a thing until about 200 ft to go, and wasn't helped by having an offset ILS to the runway. Great fun.

Yesterday, I flew the last leg of this stage to VECC.  Leaving VANP was hazy again, but arriving at VECC was very hazy, possibly because of arriving late in the day.  The leg was 543nm, taking 02:22 hrs, going via RRP JRS JJS and CEA.

Like a few other people, I have been over to the Himalayas to see Mt Everest.  Departing Kathmandu, I climbed out to the east into the cloud whilst checking for gaps to fly using the terrain map.  I went for 29000ft which is just under the summit.  The weather was not good for pictures, but I managed to get a few.

If I am in the wrong place, let me know!

No landing pics because flying the approach was enough to do, with the runway in cloud/mist until about 500 ft to go.

This morning, it was from VYYY to VTSB, via DWI CPN STN.  This was 515 nmi, taking 01:50 hrs. Visibility was much improved compared to yesterday.  However, my pc lost communication with the keyboard in the final stage, so taking screenshots was difficult.

Onwards to Singapore later in the week.
