Deputy Sheriffs Herman 1591 Posted December 16, 2021 Deputy Sheriffs Share Posted December 16, 2021 When a hold is specified (in the US anyway) in lieu of a procedure turn, it's there for a specific technical reason, such as fitting the protected course reversal airspace into a smaller area to accommodate local terrain. As I understand the comments above and after reviewing the approach plate, it's correct for a holding pattern to be shown at JOPIV and it should be flown at least through an entry. (The following page references are from the FAA Instrument Procedures Handbook (Link here)). While procedure turns can be flown in many ways (see page 4-49), when a holding pattern is specified in lieu of the PT, it should be flown as depicted, including a standard holding pattern entry (Bottom of page 4-49 and page 4-50). As stated there, "For a hold-in-lieu-of PT, the holding pattern direction must be flown as depicted and the specified leg length/timing must not be exceeded...The holding pattern maneuver is completed when the aircraft is established on the inbound course after executing the appropriate entry. If cleared for the approach prior to returning to the holding fix and the aircraft is at the prescribed altitude, additional circuits of the holding pattern are not necessary nor expected by ATC." Holding pattern entries are discussed starting on page 10-11 of the FAA Instrument Flying Handbook (Link here).
