CTD - How to create a crash dump file

Several users still have issues with crashes (CTDs) occuring in certain situations. We are working with Asobo to track down the reasons for these, but it remains close to impossible to do so without crash dump files.

 

Attached to this post you will find two scripts that will enable and disable the creation of crash dump files on your system. You can open them in any text editor (don't use Word or Wordpad though. Both might break the file). By default, CrashDumpEnable.reg will set the folder for crash dump files to C:\MyDumps. If you want to use another location, feel free to edit the script accordingly. By the way: This is easier if you change the folder options for Explorer to not hide file extensions.

 

To create such a crash dump file, please follow these steps:

1. Download both CrashDumpEnable.reg and CrashDumpDisable.reg to your system (no matter where, the normal Downloads folder is fine)
2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the download location
3. Double-click CrashDumpEnable.reg and select Yes in the warning window
4. Start MSFS and reproduce the CTD that you had.
5. Go to C:\MyDumps and zip the FlightSimulator.exe.NNNNN.dmp file (NNNNN is a 4 or 5 digit number). If you don't have much upload space available or a slow line, we strongly recommend to use 7-zip as it compresses to file size more than a normal zip does (up to about 80% less)
6. Upload the compressed file to a upload service of (almost) your choice. For example, Google Drive, Amazon, Dropbox, OneDrive, Strato HiDrive, MagentaCloud are fine. Nothing shady shady please.
7. Send me a forum message with the download link. I will download the file asap so that you get your upload space back.

 

Please note that the creation of the crash dump can take several minutes. Just be patient and don't kill the MSFS process with the Task Manager.
