Cockpit Wind Noise

Hey Hans - I can confirm the sound is tied to the 'Environment' sound slider.  I saw in another post you keep all of your other sliders at 100 but not sure where you keep this one.  If you crank that one up...even at 70 you can hear the sound at cruise levels buit maybe engine noise is drowning it out.  I have my engines sounds at 70.  It may also be tied to the strength of the winds aloft which is even more strange.  I had 90 kt winds on one of the flights and it seemed more pronounced than my flight with 20kt winds. With my Environment sound slider at 10 I have pretty much eliminated the noise....but not sure if I have killed anything else other than airport sounds that are tied to that slider.

This is my experience as well.

I think with the environment slider you also affect rain, thunder, birds, waves etc.

I am sorry we go by the people who advise us and who have spend thousands of hours in the cockpit and not you tube videos where you simply have no idea what sound recording equipment is used,

Is this really productive? Users are telling you there's a problem. Pilots are not gamers, pilots are not listening to sound effects they are more interested in the fidelity of the systems. What an SME focusses on is their area of expertise, audio/visual isn't aircrew's specialist area. However... It is mine and has been for over two decades.

I get that the packs are loud, I get that the recirc fan is monstrously loud on the flight deck. And I also get that a 500kt wind over glass is going to make some helluva noise. However none of those things happen to sound like a cartoon sound library effect of wind whistling through grass/trees. Which also happens to be present in external views and other aircraft. The contention isn't the volume, it's the quality of sound. The constant pitch changing that present is indicative of turbulent or interupted flow. Not laminar flow over glass, or constant pressure from a fan. If it's something coming from MSFS soundset and you can't do anything about it, then fair enough, say that. However, "but ma experts" and stropping off isn't a good look for your customers, or good enough really. Maybe try looking at it from a different angle? Have you considered your perception and that of SMEs aren't always correct? Things like this don't appear on their radar, but very much do and stand out from mile away to users and gamers.

Your appeal to higher authority is false here. Pilots aren't audio engineers. And don't have audio engineers ears. It just makes you look a bit dismissive. You've done it a few places in this forum and I'm starting to get a feeling that you just don't like opinions that might prove you wrong. So prove me wrong on that, and actually listen (no pun intended) and investigate.

Just to chime in as a rated, current, and couple thousand hour experienced CRJ pilot... No offense intended, but it is quite a silly wind noise, and the cockpit does not sound like that. Lots of noise from the packs, sure. Avionics and display cooling fans, absolutely. I regularly turn those off to make a phone call to OPS. But the wind noise in the sim version is just wrong. I'd honestly question the credentials of any supposedly experienced CRJ pilot telling you that it is accurate. Rough statement but I stand by it.

Yes, to me at least, it sounds as if the external wind noise is playing whilst in the cockpit.

I have to also agree that the dismissive and to be honest arrogant attitude of some people is not helpful.  Whether this wind noise is by design or not, we are just providing feedback.

Thanks

My opinion holds no water, only reason to consider it is because i bought the CRJ. I have no qualms with Aerosoft's "Day to Day Flight Fidelity", as I'm not paying PMDG level of money(i'm broke).

Today was the first time i took the bird up to FL200, and boi was i surprised to hear a sound akin to a door leaking somewhere and the wind gushing in.

My apologies if I'm wrong and it should sound like that, but I feel it's... kinda weird to have an external wind noise sounding in the cockpit. It just took me by surprise.

I agree with everyone saying it is off. out of curiosity I sent it to my friend, a CRJ Captain with thousands of hours on them, and he agreed that it is not right. He said the sound inside the cockpit at altitude sounds like this video and sent this link. Multi-Camera 4K COCKPIT FLIGHT Bombardier CRJ-900 Tallinn - Berlin FULL AUDIO - YouTube

This should be addressed as hearing the outside wind noise inside the cockpit is very off and not at all enjoyable. Telling us to just adjust the environment slider really doesn't help much since that would decrease the other sounds. a custom sound for the cockpit wind would be best. Even FS9, my main sim, has custom cockpit wind sounds.

He flew the aircraft when we met up and loved it overall, just found a few small things which I will post in a separate thread. He was blown away by how close the systems are though, so good job there!

Aerosoft nowhere stated that this would be part of this first update....

personally I do not have a problem with it, but indeed it sounds a bit “too much”

Can someone please record a short video (in game, no full flight please) where this noise can be heard? I don't hear anything except the engines and avionics fans.

I have been flying today with this update and the Windsound was extremely annoying. I was looking everywhere in my cockpit for thing I could have done wrong or doors I might have left opened and then I found out that it’s tied to the speed of the Wind and the direction.

So if you can’t hear it, make sure all your sounds in the MSFS sound Settings are on 100. Then while flying play around with the weather.  Set a wind-layer to your altitude, max the KT of the Wind and make sure the Wind is pointing directly at your nose. And I‘m pretty sure you will get what we mean.

Of course a fix would be to either lower the environmental volume or to delete the wind layer but then it’s not live weather anymore.

and of course your experts might have tested the wind sound, but did they test it with a maxed out headwind and the volume full up?

If you want to leave the wind sounds like they are, fair enough, but pls give us different sliders within the EFB for different sounds, therefore everyone can set the sound they are happy with and nobody need to complain anymore. :)

Wind noise is caused by the aircraft moving through the air. The outside wind has no effect on the speed at which the plane moves through the air. Wind changes groundspeed. Not airspeed. You changing the outside wind changes nothing as far as noise is concerned.

Yes, instantaneous changes in wind speed or direction will have momentary effects on airspeed but they are only momentary and I don't think that's what you're talking about.

I think you may be missing the point. He is saying the addon is generating wind noise based on wind direction and strength, therefore also incorrect. So put that on top of the noise just being completely unrealistic :)

I honestly don't know if this is an Aerosoft or Asobo thing, but it should be looked in to in either case since it just sounds ridiculous.

Except that Mr. Kok linked to the update thread a handful of posts before yours, and it references "- Several sound volume changes in MSFS". Which would imply this issue would have been fixed as well.

I discussed the matter with Asobo. What you hear is not part of the CRJ sound package as the wind sounds in there do not depend on the wind direction. This is a layer of wind noise which is handled by the simulator itself. Its being worked on but I don't have information on when a change will be available.
