Some considerations for "Follow Me" SAM extension

Hi,

I'm not requesting support, this post is more about feedback, insteaf of support request, so, admin feel free to move this thread anywhere else if it's in the wrong section.

So after a few tryouts, I notice it doesn't work on some payware aiports like KLAX HD (SFD), KLAS (Flytampa), LPPT Lisbon (MK Studios) and also on default Aerosoft LPFR Faro, saying "No parking location avaiable at this location, witch I think it's weird because Traffic Global uses them to park their AI planes with no issues at all. At the begging I thought TG would be the problem so I disabled it and tried those airports again with every spot avaiable, but got the same message, "No parking location..." so TG is not the problem here... witch brings another feature to consider: It would be great if it could show on the dropdown list the parking spots already occupied by online, AI or static aircraft, usiong a different color, p.ex, so the user could choose correctly. Yesterday, after  landing at OMDB Dubai I choose a parking location randomly and when I arrived it was already occupied by an aircraft, so making that distinction would be very helpful.

Another issue I have, is erratic movement of the "follow me" vehicle, at least at EDDF - Frankfurt (Aerosoft paid version), where it started on the grass, made several u-turns, went through buildings, etc, I was told this would be an issue related with the taxi network, and not SAM, witch is strange because if it was a taxi network problem AI aircraft would have the same behavior too, I guess.

Another consideration, may be the devs sould increase distance between the follow me marcheler and the aircraft, when he turns it's sometimes almost 90 degree angle, not giving the user time to turn the aircraft accordingly.

I already sugested, the final marcheler should apear the same time the vehicle starts guidance, and when the aircraft makes the final turn to the parking spot he was already there waiting, instead of popping out of nowhere, it would be more realistic, I think...

And finaly I've always thought follow me operations were also avaiable on departures, witch it isn't the case, but why not giving the user guidance to takeoff runway? DIn big airports it would be helpful. Despite it's not realistic maybe we could have it as an option. Just saying...

Overall it's an handy addition to SAM, needing a few adjustments, but i'm happy with the purchase.

I just have checked LPFR Faro and found this one had a bad Taxi Route and Ramp Starts setup, I have attached a fixed apt.dat which worked for me (Ramp Starts set to 'Tie-Down', Misc-Type ramps seem not to work with the follow me, and removed ILS precision are from some taxi routes).

apt.dat

Regarding EDDF Frankfurt it's a similar story, it just has bad taxi routes confusing the follow me logic (once again, ILS precision area on some non-runway taxi routes).

So. if some airports don't work at all or give strange follow me routes here are some steps to check and maybe fix these airports:

  • Open airport in WED (for default airports: create a new empty package and import them from gateway)
  • Check Ramp starts types and set them to either 'Tie-Down' or 'Gate' (just select all ramp starts at once, then press and hold ctrl on your keyboard and while holding change the type of one of them, it will be applied for all in one go)
  • Check for orange taxi ways (select 'Taxi-Routes' view in the lower right window section to see them) and remove the ILS precision areas (once again you can select all of them at once and with ctrl key change them in one go)
  • Save and export the file (don't forget exporting!)

This is what i've done with Default LPFR, Aerosoft EDDF and EDDN (default and Aerosoft version) and it always worked afterwards.

Thanks for the tips @FlyAgi. I did manage to solve the problem at Las Vegas Airport (KLAS), but EDDF and KLAX was a no go. Despite making every parking spot as gates at KLAX, it keeps showing "no parking location avaiable...". Regarding EDDF I did remove all ILS Precison Areas in every orange taxi ways, but when I tried to export it, WED showed a lot of errors and I don't know how to fix them.

The devs are looking into this and the plugin will be more tolerant regarding these airport specs currently not working so they will be working without modification in the future.

I've updated to the newest version, 2.1.5, deleted every apt.cache file previously created, and after some testing I'm reporting the following:

1. at KLAX (SFD aka MisterX6 version), if landing on runways 25L or 25R, it shows "No airport data found for icao code CL02", witch is the Kilroy Heliport also modeled in the package. I'm assuming SAM atempts to read data from that heliport instead, maybe because it's very close to these runways. that doesn't happen on the opposite side, 07L or 07R, I can't figure if it's a SAM or KLAX problem. no issues to report if landing on the others 06L/24R or 06R/24L, comming from the west.

2. at KLAS (Flytampa) if landing on runways 08L,01L and 01R it shows "No parking location avaiable at this location". I notice these runways are also near some helipads who belong to the same airport, so, again, i don't know if it's a Flytampa package or SAM issue.

3. At EDDF (Aerosoft payware package) the erratic movement of the follow me vehicle still happens.

Another issues to consider, although they do not affect plugin funcionality:

- Lights on the roof of the Smart and Toyota pick up truck are OFF

- front wheels of the Smart do not move.

And that's it. I'll keep testing and reporting furher...

Thanks for reporting.

1 + 2: Confirmed, the situation is the same at KLGA La Guardia. Will report this as a new issue.

3: Aerosoft EDDF should in theory work but does not because of the taxi routes micromanagement, replacing the taxi routes fixes the FollowMe behaviour. I have updated the EDDF internal files so we can do a hot fix patch or something like that.

I will also report the assets issues so they will get fixed in a future update.

Hi,

FlyAgi: "Open airport in WED", what's WED please ?

I have issues at all with this plugin:

The menu comes up normaly, but after selecting a parkposition and clicking the action-button:

- XPlane crashes on one pc immediately (new pc build for XPlane)

- XPlane just ignores the click, as if the plugin was never been installed (it's an older pc, all grafik-settings to minimum)

Both pc are on Linux Mint 20.4, XPlane 11.53r, both Intel-CPUs.

Thank You very much for any advice.

Kai

WED is a scenery creation tool which can modify airports:

https://developer.x-plane.com/tools/worldeditor/

Regarding your issues I suggest to report them at the help desk, I have no Linux myself and can't look into this. Please send your log.txt and sam.log files as well (sam.log is found in plugins/SAM folder).

I found that for the follow me car to appear you have to set the objects slider to 'low' at least, otherwise X-Plane draws no objects at all it seems (aside from static aircrafts and ground traffic). On lowest objects slider position it's some kind of normal that the follow me car does not appear so the click seems to be ignored but it is not, X-Plane just does not draw the object.

Also don't forget to list my solution for "no gates available" :

Solution : I opened WED and placed the original layers from the overlay DSF on top of the airport information (apt.dat soon-to-be information), and at the same root hierarchy level.

The 'no gates available' issue should be solved by now in the plugin, not sure if this in the 2.1.5 update already but there was an issue with older XP 10 specificated apt.dat files. This also means that just exporting an older aiport again with a more recent WED version for XP11 specification will solve this kind of issue.

I would like to add some feedback about the FollowMe plugin, now that this topic is open.

Is there any chance that the followme menu only shows parking spots where there are no planes parked? This feels like a lottery that really kills the immersion. YOu select a parking spot, then the followMe takes you there, just to discover X-Plane already put a plane there as a static aircraft.

Can the plugin filter out these locations in some way? Or can it tell x-plane not to draw a plane in that location? That would be amazing. Most of my parkings are ruined by this :)

Currently the only solution for this is to disable parked aircraft if this happens. There is a solution in the works for this but this might take some time and is not to expect to change in the near future.

(Art controls are modified.)

In my opinion, the product is not stable enough to be used as of today.

But, it comes with little surprise as Follow-me plugins are notorious to not be the easy walk in the park...

I've applied the last SAM basis update.

Still, it cannot be used safely.

Currently the only solution for this is to disable parked aircraft if this happens. There is a solution in the works for this but this might take some time and is not to expect to change in the near future.

Thanks :)

Good to know it´s being taken into consideration for a possible solution.

Again, I had to :

Solution : I opened WED and placed the original layers from the overlay DSF on top of the airport information (apt.dat soon-to-be information), and at the same root hierarchy level...

I've a lot of sceneries; I hope you will publish a more compliant update, since I don't see myself opening everything and reexporting everything.

Edit :

On other payware sceneries that I already edited, I just had to reexport with the current stable WED to avoid a crash to desktop.

There must be something special about your sceneries or installation but by the book it does not matter where you put your DSF information in WED, apt.dat content is always written into the apt.dat file, dsf content is always written into the dsf file and the hierarchy in WED is dropped on export anyway.

If this happens on older airports then it might be caused by XP 10 specification apt.dat formatting, there have been some issues regarding this and some have been fixed internally, I'm not sure if the 2.1.5 plugin already has all these fixes. If there is an issue caused by XP 10 apt.dat files it should be solved by just exporting the airport again with a recent WED version using XP 11.30 export target.

Yes, maybe it's not linked with that but rather with the version of WED it was exported with.

It happens with a lot all of my sceneries like LEVT, LTFG, LTAI, LGSR.... it can't be a random error....

When I open and re-export in WED, it works

I have 233 custom scenery folders, most unedited by me.

EDIT : also true with ORBX EGNX. I'm sure ORBX is a reliable scenery producer... still CTD with SAM FM.

Also XP10 specifications, for instance it's  hard to believe, I am sure recent payware sceneries have been exported with recent wed. Even more recent than mine if I open some apt.dat in a text editor, can see recent version of wed in use by providers.

Also I could understand for one scenery to be broken, but not for many (actually each I try)..

I'm sure you're right though because I am sure you know better as dev, and I will wait for next update embedding all the fixes.

Still I have to say that I am expecting it to work, as a customer.

Of course I won't load and export my 233 custom scenery folders one by one, when fixing the plugin could solve it in one pass.

Hope you nailed it, looking forward to it.  🙂

OK, I've nailed it down to the file apt.cache

What happens is that in a lot of my sceneries, for instance, the (untouched) ORBX EGNX scenery, I have apt.cache where I have a strange taxi routing network.

		<taxi_routing_network>
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="52" longitude="-1" type="both" id="0" name="0 unnamed entity(split)" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="52" longitude="-1" type="both" id="1" name="1 unnamed entity(split)" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="52" longitude="-1" type="both" id="2" name="2 unnamed entity(split)" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="52" longitude="-1" type="both" id="3" name="3 unnamed entity(split)" />

For instance, I was testing on LEVT airport and I had the same vconfiguration with strange latitude and longitude references. Associated with an immediate CTD when I click on "Start guidance" in SAM.

After exporting fresh from WED, launching and closing the sim I have a much more plausible cache file (LEVT here) :

		<taxi_routing_network>
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.88047718" longitude="-2.7364584399999998" type="both" id="0" name="0 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.880467039999999" longitude="-2.7364730800000001" type="both" id="1" name="1 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.880442000000002" longitude="-2.73649261" type="both" id="2" name="2 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.880409219999997" longitude="-2.7365153900000001" type="both" id="3" name="3 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.880337089999998" longitude="-2.73654223" type="both" id="4" name="4 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.88027151" longitude="-2.7365674499999999" type="both" id="5" name="5 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.88022084" longitude="-2.73657314" type="both" id="6" name="6 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.880183879999997" longitude="-2.7365397900000001" type="both" id="7" name="7 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.883408439999997" longitude="-2.7288007300000001" type="both" id="8" name="8 _stop" />
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="42.883477229999997" longitude="-2.7287349000000001" type="both" id="9" name="9 _stop" />

An now SAM works perfectly at this airport

Maybe that means something to you ?

If I look to KABQ apt.cache file I know that I will get a SAM CTD because I see the same stuff :

		<taxi_routing_network>
			<taxi_routing_node latitude="35" longitude="-106" type="both" id="0" name="0 Jetway_Test.obj" />

Aaaaannnd the more I dig, the more I find...

that apt.cache is created by SAM....

https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/232704-what-is-the-file-aptcache/

So SAM created weird files and I guess when I reexport in WED I force SAM to create a new cache file.

Maybe I used an old SAM version at that time, which proudcted a corrupted apt.cache file, especially in the taxi route departement.

If I manually remove all cache files, I suppose my current version of SAM will recreate them, in the correct version now.

Soon, Il will be able to write documentation for Aerosoft products. 🙂

So I inactivated the KABQ apt.cache file, started X-Plane and then SAM recreated a cache file. Bingo ! This time, the cache file looked better ! Double bingo ! Plausible conclusion : my cache files have been created with an early, bugged version, of SAM.

I'm sure I won't be the sole user in this case....

And.... after that of course the follow me is working good at KABQ. Triple Bingo !

Didn't we talk about deleting apt.cache files already? Not sure anymore, I have told this often to do if FollowMe gives strange results... The files are not currupted but outdated and the plugin fails to update them because version updates are not triggering a database rebuild - this has been fixed internally with more triggers for automatic database rebuilding and also a button in the menu to do this manually.

For now just open X-Plane 11 folder, search for files "apt.cache", wait until all files are found and then delete them all (then SAM will rebuild them on next start, the cache files are speeding up loading times and there is no risk deleting them).
