P3D freeze when changing approach in FMS

I have been unsuccessful completing a flight because I always get a P3D freeze when selecting an approach in the FMS. The scenario that seems to cause this:

 

During cruise or decent, after receiving approach info. from ATC (P3D ATC) I typically have to change the approach I have already entered. Sometimes I am just messing around entering different approaches, but I always end up with P3D freezing, and staying frozen. On checking Task Manager after P3D freezes I see that P3D is using very little CPU resource. So far I've let it set frozen for up to 10 minutes, but I've found no way to get it unfrozen, other than to force quit.
