Airliners Over the US Hit Over 800 Miles Per Hour

Recommended Posts

Note the keyword here is "miles per hour".

801mph is "just" 696kt.

Record for the 747 is 752kt GS ;)

Also note how many Airbusses already made it through the 700kt barrier:

Absolutely.  You know it's about that jet stream!  Still, that ground speed is really something!

Indeed it is, my record so far is "just" 636kt and we had to push it to M.80 for that ;)

And you 'forget' to set the correct CI on those flights?

Remember: at tailwind you have to take care not to come into a stall 😉

So, some airline plane flew 800 mph across Atlantic or over America at 200 mph tail wind. I would have hated to be going the other direction.

That was the first thought that came to me as well!

Yeah, that's the problem: in one direction you always fly against the earth rotation 😉

I don't know what hit me there, somehow the A/T went into MCP SPD and the MCP window opened up at these speeds. Strange coincidences!

I once read that the upper air winds over Japan and Kamchatka can create the fastest tailwinds in the world.   I wonder if any of you have heard that?

Anyway, I have been flying over the U.S. lately, and encountered some really high winds.  Last night I was flying over Oklahoma (KMCI to KDFW) and had 120 knot headwinds.  I think the highest A318/319/320/321 ground speed I have seen so far is about 610 in recent memory.  I'm sure in all my years of flight sim, that I have beaten that though.

This is my personal record, it's not much but there is a photo to prove it, ( not the best quality BTW ).... LOL .... (A-320 CEO)

I'd have hated passing into and out of jetstreams that strong. They can make for some pretty intense turbulence along their boundaries.
