Deputy Sheriffs Herman 1591 Posted February 2, 2018 Deputy Sheriffs Share Posted February 2, 2018 A web search using terms such as "weather forecast interpolation" will help you. I'll assume here you know what "interpolation" means. In general, the better the historical data for a location (such as frequency and how far back the record goes) the better the forecast. To produce a forecast for a point with poor or non-existent historical data, interpolation is used based on two or more higher quality data sources near it. If the "high quality data" locations are more than about 25-50 km apart, linear interpolation is usually augmented by statistical models to produce a more accurate result for points between the two locations. This gives a more reliable forecast for a point than using a simple area forecast.
