A 2 hour Lightning Sortie

Hello all,

Thought I'd post a fun mission I did. Taking off from Coningsby(forgive me, taking off with an 11sqn Lightning not from Binbrook and trailing a Su-27 Flanker is certainly inaccurate on many levels, but at least the tankers were Victors).

Taking off from Coningsby at 0830, I met up with the first Victor tanker in the North Sea at 0850(I modded the Lightning to pick up Tanker tacan), filling up to fly south to intercept the flanker. Having met with the Flanker, I trailed it all the way along the English Channel until it turned south having passed Penzance. Once it had left, I filled up with the second Victor up to the ventral tanks(but not the externals). I jettisoned the external tanks(which I understand never actually happened ever), and made a Mach 2 dash to Coningsby landing with about 1600lbs left.

And an extra picture of a 74 sqn F3 underneath the bear.

Enjoy,

Peter

PS, the tacview should you wish to see it.

Hi Peter, are you using the tacpack, if so I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me how to set that up with the tanker.. I usually use the 108.05 or 17Y channel with the TACAN but for the life of me it never picks up the tanker!

From what I have read unfortunately the Aerosoft Lightning is not coded to pick up Tacpack TACAN frequencies sadly. What I did instead was used a mod that was actually meant for the AS F-14 that could pick up Tacpack TACAN and used it as a 2D panel.

Hi Peter

Your scenario is not that wildly innacurate. Conningsby was a relief landing ground for Binbrook , so the lightnings frequently flew into and out of there, and we spent a few weeks on the dispersals during "Operation Bolt Hole" when they were resurfacing Binbrooks runway. Admittedly that was 5sqn  ( I think 11 went to Honnington).

As for the Flanker, they were operational in '85  so the two could have met !.............. big beast isn't it :o.

The OW's were trialled (successfully) with the jettison, but operationally there was no need to get rid of them, so the ERU's were never electrically connected.

Thank's for the HU on the tacan , I'll look into it.

PS. I'll post the 19sqn  repaint as soon as I've finished playing with it .:focus_s:

Ah I see so we'll say feasibly accurate then!

Yes I suppose so, but the flanker in question has the new flag, which is post 1991 which again contradicts me. I wonder though how a Lightning escorting a Flanker would be like.

Indeed, just I wanted to go mach 2, and the limits of those tanks were Mach 0.95, so something had to go.

I searched it previously in this forum and you had said the TACAN for the F3 couldn't pick up Tacpack. I tried with both the F3 and F6; both were unsuccessful, so I had my work around. But if it can be rectified that would be fantastic. I suppose then the air to air function on the TACAN will then be able to give distance and direction then.

Fantastic I look forward to it.

My Tacan code is not directly compatible with tacpac, but I'll see if I can figure out the F14 workaround  and incorporate it , The lightning only ever had distance reading for air to air , so you need the radar for direction..

Ah right.

Basically in the F-14 forum somewhere a couple of months back a guy posted a gauge that went into the HUD of the F-14 as an overlay, I guess if you search in there you'll find it. I just use it as a 2D panel instead.

I can't find where the topic itself was, but looking in my history, this was where the mod was posted:

Scrap that, found it:
