A318 HYD PTU

Featured Replies

Almost completed BA2 flight KJFK EGLC in the A318, when on downwind, I get an ecam message HYD PTU, which shuts down my left engine. A check of the overhead shows the yellow system not happy. How do I resolve this? After such  long journey, be great if I could simply reset some thing. Looked in the manuals and did a search, but could not find reference to this. The good news? is I and not long saved the flight prior to this issue.

Hi Ged,

the HYD PTU message is the caused by the Engine Failure, not the cause for it.

We do not model any failures, so there has to be something else on your computer causing it. Without further details on your system, screenshots from the issue, etc. it will be hard to help.

Hi Emanuel,

Yes, agree. I think I worked it out..I am out of fuel, hence why the engine stopped and why the HYD PTU warning? Was at the end of a long flight KJFK - EGLC in the A318 (BA2) not long after sending this help message, my other engine failed. When I examined the MCDU, saw where fuel was about exhausted. The trip planner said I had plenty of fuel at the beginning of the flight. Maybe trip planner not too accurate?

I am looking into how I can increase the fuel tank size on another post, as maybe the A318 used by BA might be their Elite model with bigger fuel capacity.

So, the Aerosoft A318 never warns about fuel exhaustion, before it happens and when it happens, other than the engines stopping?

Is there a way of fueling in the air

You can set the fuel capacity to Unlimited. Just have a look at the settings of your FSX/P3D

British airways has only 32 seats in the g-euna and g-eunb. It is doable without a warning. But winds are also a big player on that route.

I prefer not to have the fuel set at unlimited, as this somewhat spoils this excellent A/C.

I eventually did the flight ok. Just had to make sure the tanks were full at KJFK, at the expense of cargo and baggage, And yes, only had 32 seats used, as happens in real life. You wound not want to stuff about too much with bad weather over London, as not much fuel to divert.

The problem is that the Aerosoft A318 burns far, far too much fuel, circa 20-25% more than the real thing.

It's not so tight in real life!

Yes Simon. I thought the same. I would imagine in real life, BA spending extra time on their KJFK>EGLC fuel/cargo load calcs, though prevailing winds help. The EGLC>KJFK flight stops at Shannon for extra fuel.

the stop in Shannon is where it enters the US too.  Immigration occurs there so it saves a considerable time for the passengers when they arrive at JFK as they are now flying domestic.

Indeed, though the westbound issue is not so much one of pure range as the fact that the takeoff weight is limited out of LCY due to the short runway there and so it's not possible to uplift sufficient fuel for the trip (obviously not a problem coming back). I suspect (though I've not actually done the sums) it would probably theoretically be possible to load sufficient fuel to do it direct if there were no TOW limitations.

The pre-clearance at SNN is a handy distraction to sell to the pax though and I'm sure it played a major part when BA were choosing where to do the tech stop!

It seems BA have decided to stop one of the EGLC-KJFK flights due to the Shannon customs clearance service closing before the BA flight lands at Shannon. Maybe it is a combination of inconvenience for the pax having no customs clearance and economies of this flight.

Be interesting to see the economics for the flight compared to a A380/B777
