Following bus de-regulation in 1986, and in a bid to cut financial losses, South Yorkshire's Transport subsequently closed East Bank Garage in Sheffield in 1988. Following the closure, a group of former SYT managers decided to leave SYT and set-up their own bus operation. This new company was called "Yorkshire Terrier" and started operating in August 1988, initially using a fleet of aging Leyland Nationals.
