  1. I've discovered one more thing, the RaceInfo object, which adds another checkbox to the Host Options screen:

    Still no Roles displayed though, but I think it is some little thing I'm missing.

  2. The MindenXC mission is found here:

    ...\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Missions\Racing\MindenXC\

    It uses an .SPB file, but you can find the original .XML file in the SDK:

    ...\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\Mission Samples\Racing\MindenXC\

    Yes, the clutter is an issue, especially using Notepad. I've decided to start from scratch, using one of my own flight plans as a basis, so there is not so much clutter. Also, I need to get an understanding of placing the objects for start/finish gates, and maybe turnpoints. I used AustrianSoaring2 because it is a soaring mission, and has an airborne start already.

    I'm really not interested in all the other bells and whistles, just a few things to force some soaring specific actions. I'm expecting pilots to navigate the task the way they normally would, with the soaring instruments you and Max have given us. I'm just after the start height enforcement, and the airborne starts...so far. Thanks for the advice, Ian, I'll have a look at those missions.

  3. I'm having a look at missions as a way to try to implement airborne starts in multiplayer sessions. I notice when going through the process of hosting an existing FSX mission, that there are several player "slots" presented at the briefing room, e.g. MindenXC mission has 16 of them.

    I started by editing one of Ian's missions, the AustrianSoaring2 one, I've added several Player Objects and setting them up the same way I see in the MindenXC mission, even grouping them in the same way, but when I host it, I don't get my player slots presented. When I fly it, I get the message about not being able to place me in the location specified, and get spawned near the host (which is me), using the airborne start location that Ian's mission normally gives. Obviously I'm missing a detail but can't figure out what.

  4. This problem can happen, even if no sailplanes are close by, i.e. first pilot (host) has already taken off, released, etc., second player joins then, alone on the runway. When this happened to me, I tried open Traffic Browser, but couldn't understand all the commands to send to towplane to try to make it start.

    My friend has not been using the Smart Towplane, and I think next time, I will have him use it and see if it solves problem. In fact, yesterday, when this happened again, neither of us used the Smart guy.

  5. When I host multiplayer, I get presented with the Session Type options of either a Free Flight (which I've been using), or a Mission. So I'm wondering what is the simplest way of making my Free Flights into Missions. I don't really want or need all the bells and whistles that missions allow, not even the task itself needs to be in there. I'm really only hoping to get the option of an airborne start, and the task would be handled, as now, by GPS from the .FLT or the CAISet gauges (and XCSoar for people that use it).

  6. We are still encountering this issue, however, some workarounds have come to light:

    1. By rejoining the session, and invoking another towplane, it's possible to get one that will start up, however, the original dud is still sitting there in the same spot, and since you will get towed through it, it's necessary to disable collisions in your realism settings. Host must then allow players to change these settings.

    2. By having the host allow spawn near host, if the host has towed successfully, and even better, thermaled higher, subsequent players can select spawn near host and avoid the aerotow entirely.

    On the bright side, I have noticed that two sailplanes spawning on the runway, seem to get positioned lined up one behind the other.

  7. Yes, both of us in the same glider...it's way cool! FSX threw up a warning about non-standard instruments or something, but for the most part it worked as advertised. There is a process of transferring control back and forth between pilots, using SHIFT+T, and it did work for the first transfer, but thereafter, even though the banner readouts indicated I had control returned to me, it wasn't the case, and control stayed with the second pilot. The control transfer only applies to stick and rudder...everything else can be controlled by both occupants at all times.

  8. Got some time in this last night with my friend DC. Our Open Class task, a 198km triangle out of Shiflet Field in the Appalachians, proved to be not very easy, and we wasted lots of time experimenting with aircraft sharing, so we quit at the first turnpoint and landed. Only a measly 58km!

    I really enjoyed flying this bird, and it seems to reward good piloting. There were a couple of instances, where I let my airspeed get too low thermalling, and I was punished by a protracted "mush/stall" which cost me a lot of altitude.

    I did shoot some video, but will have to review it to see if anything useful worth uploading.

  9. ....you never really know whether anyone's actually going to fly it...

    Seriously? I've been checking this thread almost daily since you started it! Started thinking about Open Class tasks, too, and have roughed out a couple based on some Condor tasks I have. Possibly tonight, my brother and a flightmate will try out this airplane.

    I made only the briefest test flight last night so can't say anything at this point. It was more to check out a task than the airplane, and I didn't even get to the point of starting the task, just takeoff, tow, fly around a little, tried unsuccessfully to thermal. It certainly *feels* like an Open Class ship when trying to roll in and out of turns! Seems to handle quite differently than the version 7, but I have next to zero time in that one as well.

    Looking forward to more time in it!

  10. How did you set up the airborne start for this task? Do you just skew to where you want to be, and save it as a flight?

    We found with FSX, when flying this task through FSHost, we got the airborne start OK (since using FSHost is basically a Free Flight).

    But when I hosted the task with FSX Multiplayer, we got started on the runway at Samedan.

  11. If you tell me how to incorporate another camera position we can put that into the model straight away. Actual numbers would help.

    I added this to the end of the Aircraft.cfg file:

    [CameraDefinition.0]

    Title = "Back Seat"

    Guid = {AFA06A0A-7341-4b1f-B486-CE3778336276}

    Origin = Virtual Cockpit

    MomentumEffect = Yes

    SnapPbhAdjust = Swivel

    SnapPbhReturn = False

    PanPbhAdjust = Swivel

    PanPbhReturn = False

    Track = None

    ShowAxis = YES

    AllowZoom = TRUE

    InitialZoom = 0.75

    SmoothZoomTime = 2.0

    ZoomPanScalar = 1.0

    ShowWeather = Yes

    XyzAdjust = TRUE

    ShowLensFlare=FALSE

    Category = Cockpit

    PitchPanRate=20

    HeadingPanRate=60

    InitialXyz=0, 0.087918266654014587, -1.1035174407959

    InitialPbh=4.0381917953491211, 0, 0.091049946844577789

    I'm sure the InitialXyz= values could be rounded, or tweaked to get it perfect, but it is about right for me. These are simply the values I fished out of the .FLT file after moving the eyepoint back and up a tad. I haven't fine tuned them.

  12. ...Is it a two seater as per the photo or is there two models?

    I was wondering the same thing. I just installed the existing ASH25 to have a look at that one. The existing ASH25 3d cockpit has both seats c/w panels modeled, and you can move your eyepoint back to get "into" the back seat, but I think a custom camera definition needs to be defined to really use it, especially with TIR. I'm assuming the new one will be handled similarly. I'm going to go ahead and do that for the existing one, just to understand how it's done, and in case it will be required for the new one. I have yet to try the dual pilots feature in FSX, and looking forward to giving it a go when this sweetheart is released.

  13. Interesting! I'm used to setting weather in Condor, where cloud height is inexorably linked to temperature and dewpoint. I tried to duplicate the Condor weather when I made this task for FSX, even to the point of setting the same temp/dewpoint, although it does not appear to have any bearing on cloud height in FSX, i.e. you can set them independently at the weather planner.

  14. No problem! I had intended to connect today (Saturday) and at least chat with you on Teamspeak about multiplayer stuff, but my wife decided we were going skiing.

    Tomorrow, Sunday, I and my friend DC are planning to connect, assuming there will be some other pilots there. There is a scheduled power outage here from 0600-1000 EST (1200-1600 Samedan time), which leaves me only 20 minutes before race start, but hopefully power will be restored earlier than that.

    I think you said you would not be able to make the Sunday one? Is that still the case?

  15. That's fabulous news, Max! More than we were expecting!

    But since you asked, I would like to be able to assign keyboard presses to the instrument buttons. Don't know if that's possible, but would be nice feature to have, instead of using mouse in the 3d cockpit.

  16. ...The time is local time in Samedan, Switzerland. And that is the race starting time, so be in the air before that time...

    I guess that would be 10:20 AM my time, EST. Is it regatta start, or can we start when we are ready?

    As an FSX user, will we have to invoke the Soaring Clock, or will loading the saved flight be enough? (I guess I will find out when I try it)

  17. Maybe I will have to test this Soaring Clock.

    We have been doing FSX multiplayer DirectIP, and all players just loading the same .FLT, .WX as the host when joining. I thought that was sufficient to guarantee everybody's clocks synchronized with the host for CumulusX! purposes, however we have still noticed occasionally, seeing each other thermalling where there is no cloud. I thought that might be due to late joining, but shouldn't FSX take care of that?
