  1. I am above 18000 feet and trying to do a screenshot that requires slew mode. I am trying to shut off the engines so I do not have ANY exhaust visibility. Of course, above 18k, any kind of engine activity is going to produce a cloud. I need to shut this down completely to freeze a shot.

    F1 doesnt work.

    Anyone?

    ctrl+shift+f1
  2. Do you think we could get a FPS vs hardware chart from the beta testers? Kind of like what PMDG did with their 747X.

I'd really like to know what kind of performance I can expect.

    Performance is very good.

    My system:

    Q6600 @ 3.6 ghz

    4 GB Ram

    Geforce 8800GT

    32bit vista

I locked my FPS at 20, and they stay there while flying the f16, even above Mega Airport Heathrow. Don't have my exact FS settings here, but they are all in the high regions for sure.

  3. Mathijs,

sorry to ask this here, I didn't know in which forum to post it..

I purchased and installed WOS succesfully, but when I try to run it I get the attached error..

When I try to run it again it asks for my email+serial again too.

I am running vista home premium 32 bit, and use realtek HD onboard audia with drivers from june (the latest).

    EDIT:

I solved it by downloading the latest directX from the microsoft site.. Didn't come through with windows update and I wasn't aware there was a new version ...

As for the "asking again for serial on every run problem": run WOS as administrator, otherwise your settings won't be saved too. Briliant and great looking game now these issues are solved ;)

  4. World of Subways Vol 1: New York Underground "The Path" covers one of the most important subways routes of New York. Starting in New Jersey the 50 Kilometer Path route ends in downtown Manhattan and over 40% is above ground. This is a complete simulator, not an add-on for an existing train simulator. Aerosoft told us interest from flight simmers was pretty high so you might that a look at this new simulator.

The simulator is very modern and uses a advanced game engine with superb graphics and animation and uses a complex scoring system to track your progress. The physics behind the simulation is based on highly realistic models making this one of the more advanced simulations available.

    Product page: http://www.aerosoft.com/cgi-local/re/ibosh...gi?showd,,50176

Price : €25.00 (plus VAT if you buy from within the EEC)

    Looks great Mathijs!!

Will definitely check this one out!

  5. I know the majority of you fly with freeware aircraft without PFD's etc. but simply adjusting the runways to their real heading would be a small job and really make the scenery perfect! Then all sides would be happy.

I wont say anything about the possible mis-alignment of the runways as I am not able to check that at this moment, but why do you think changing the heading of those runways would be a small job?

I do a llittle scenery design myself in my spare time and in my opinion this would not be as simple as you would think... The runways are integrated in the underlying satelite photos, turning these runways in any direction would mean a rather large job for the developer afaik ...

  6. Hi guys,

    Ok firstly my system:

    - XP Pro SP2 with .NET Framework 3.5

    - Intel Quad Core Q6600

    - 4GB DDR2-800 RAM

    - NVidia 8800GTS (640MB, although it is being reported as 740...?!) - 169.21 Driver

    - 300GB SATA-II System Drive

    - FSX SP1 and SDK SP1a

I have almost the same system as you have (i have an 8800 GT), on which windows version are you? I have vista sp1, and FSX sp2.

When I first installed FSX, my framerates where smooth (locked at 20 and never dropped below 19). This slowly degraded over the weeks untill my fps looked like yours.

Yesterday I suddenly recalled having read somewhere about removing the fsx.cfg to improve fps. I removed this file, set my graphics settings again (everything to the right except AI) BOOM-> 20 FPS again (default airports and addon airports like aerosoft heathrow)!

    Maybe worth a try? :)

I also would take a close look at your graphics driver and maybe reinstall those. It's very weird the amount of memory is not correct ...

  7. Hi VinFlyer

I myself am always happy with "LG" screens. Can't help you with technical details as I'm not into that a lot (for screens anyway).

Why wouldn't you buy a widescreen? If you take eg a 20(or was it 21)" widescreen, you get the same physical height of a 4:3 19" screen but a lot wider..

You will see you get a lot more room in different programs like photoshop. For someone who is a professional graphical designer I would consider this a (huge) advantage ...

  8. Hi Edu,

I have to agree with the previous posters. You have to use your monitor's native resolution to have best results.

I looked it up for your monitor and you have to use "1920x1200".

the 20 pixels difference with the resolution you used may seem unimportant, but you should know that your screen is going to manupulate the image (software-wise) if the resolution is not equal to the native resolution. Knowing this, even 20 pixels can mean a big difference...

  9. Hello Matthijs,

just now I tried to order it using my old key, but the webshop claims the code is invalid. I bought it originally on 20 April 2006, the code is a 21-number code starting with 088. What could be wrong here? E-mail address and everything are the same as they were when I bought it.

    Thanks!

    Gert Wijbrans

    Gert,

at first I had this problem too, but when I went out to look in my shop account I saw that a second s/n appeared at my lukla order (from april 2006). It looks like this:

    x Lukla - Mount Everest

    - Version : Direct Download

    - Serial : 088-******************

    - Serial : 67****************/np

Use this serial number only for the new download file (notice download links).

when I use the second serial (starting with 67) to purchase the X version, the serial confirmation is OK!

  10. Hi Paul,

you can't change the files because the Program Files folder is secured by default (in Vista anyways).

You can lift the security measures off the flightsim X folder if you want, that way you won't have troubles again when trying to changes this or that file.

Just rightclick the FSX folder and select properties. On the security tab select "edit".

In the edit window, you give the right user(s) "write" access as you can see in the screenshot.

  11. Mathijs,

you are right, I am still using few year's old methods. Didn't follow the hardware scene very good untill recently.

Thanks for the info, will try to remember it and don't give other people wrong advice anymore ;)

  12. Ok, so due to my native resolution is 1440x900 it would be better. Thanks for answer!

Not necessarily. You can multiply the height and width of the resolution with each other to get the total amount of pixels.

    1280*1024 = 1310720

    1440*900 = 1296000

You are around 14000 pixels below the (imaginative) borderline. However, I would still recommend the 512MB version if you tend too keep your hardware for a long time. Future games will start to use larger and larger textures, and in that case the larger memory is also welcome :)

  13. only question is whether the FSX "needs" 512 MB?

No game "needs" 512 MB as long as you play it on average resolutions. If you are getting higher than 1280*1024 you will start noticing the benefit of 512MB over 256MB.

  14. Currently the best warranty on any new hardware (stock or overclocked) is from BFG. Simply put, it's lifetime warranty...

Indeed, but they are not the only one. eg. EVGA also has lifetime warranty AND they allow you to change stock cooling...

    How did you over-clock yours?

I will explain how I overclocked mine, but this will not be a step-by-step guide as Mathijs is allready preparing this. So if you don't feel too confident I would wait for this guide ;)

The following I write applies to the Q6600 (stock at 2.4 ghz). I use DDR2 800mhz RAM. This ensures my ram will not get overclocked when overclocking the CPU.

First of all, there are 2 revisions of this processor. One with B3 stepping and a newer one with G0 stepping. The only practical difference is that the G0 is easier to overclock, as it runs cooler. You can tell if you have a B3 or G0 by looking at the revision number. SLACR revision means you have a G0.

    A G0 can be clocked without troubles to 3.6GHZ, a b3 arround 3.4GHZ.

For getting those high speeds (more than 1ghz above stock speed!) it's only a matter of changing some parameters in the BIOS. If you want to go high (> 3.2 ghz or so) I would change the boxed cooler for a zalman or a scythe cooler, they run more silent and they provide better cooling.

Before you overclock make sure you have the following applications installed: coretemp (make sure you use version 0.95.4, otherwise you will have wrong readings), CPUz and Orthos.

Coretemp is used to monitor temperatures. Your CPU never should get warmer than 65°C when stressed!! CPUz is used to monitor CPU and memory speed details. Orthos is used to stress the CPU.

Now reboot the pc and enter BIOS. You should find some kind of advanced tab here. There are 4 settings that you will have to control in order to overclock: FSB speed, Multiplier, Core voltage and DRAM settings. You should set your DRAM settings so that it runs 1:1 with your FSB (you can check this on the memory tab of CPUz) Do this before you overclock anything else but ONLY in the case you have 800mhz memory. If you have slower memory I would change the proportion so your memory runs slower than the FSB.

Next step is to set the Multiplier of your CPU on 9x. Immediately after that you set your FSB a bit higher. Not more then 20mhz. Reboot your pc and inspect the results in CPUz and Coretemp. Run orthos for about 1/2 hour to make sure the temps don't get too high.

These steps you repeat (but as the speeds get higher, enlarge the FSB in steps of 10 or even 5 mhz at a time).

After a while you will notice that your CPU gets hotter, and at a certain speed (this will occur arround 3.2 ghz, but can be sooner or later) you will notice that your 1/2 hour running of orthos fails after a few minutes. This means your CPU has become unstable.

No panic :). Reboot and enter BIOS. You do not change any speeds this time but you enlarge your core voltage (vcore) with about 2 steps. Only a minimal voltage increase but it should get the CPU stable again.

Reboot and rund orthos and coretemp. The temps will be higher then the previous run, because of the higher voltage. Orthos will have to run stabily for half an hour again. If not, slightly increase the voltage again but make sure you NEVER get higher then 65°C while running orthos!!

If the CPU runs stable again for half an hour, you can resume enlarging the FSB speed, untill it gets unstable again, then you enlarge the VCore.

Don't get your VCore too high. 1.6 volt is allready too much I think (but not sure)...

Loop through this cycle untill your CPU gets 62-65°C while being stressed by orthos.

If you think you are finished, you will have to run orthos for a longer duration (hours at least, 12 hours should be enough). If the CPU passes this test you can call it succesfully overclocked. If orthos fails, you will have to lower VCore or FSB a little bit at a time and re-run the test.

If you want to speed it up more now, you will need better cooling ;)

I myself have a G0 stepping (SLACR revision) Q6600. The frontside bus is set at 385 and the voltage at 1.465 volt (but don't shoot me if you get more, I'm not at home right now so this is by heart ...). This gives me a clockspeed of 3.465 GHZ. My memory is running at 1:1, so at 385mhz too. As I have DDR2 800mhz memory it is even running a little bit below the speeds it was designed for (385*2=770 mhz). I did not get my CPU higher because I didn't install my cooling well. One of my cores runs at 65°C stressed, while the others run at 55°C... Will have to crack it open sometime ;)

    Hope this helps someone :)

  15. Actually the 8800GT is selling for 210 euros now only the stock is a problem :lol:

indeed, if you search well you can find it quite cheap (mostly online). However I would advice to spend a _little_ bit extra (arround 280 or so) and buy a pre-overclocked model. EVGA, MSI or BFG for example have such cards. Advantage is 1) you keep the warranty in contradiction with when you overclock yourself 2) you get a card for nearly the price of a GT but with the prestations/results of a GTX

  16. Exactly, the case and dvd drive do not affect the framerates you get. For a game like FS the speed of the hard disk is also not so vital. If you check the load on the hard disk, even while starting FSX, you see it is still the rest of the system and not disk speed that is the real limit.

True. In general, the CPU affects frames the most. I recently overclocked my CPU (q6600) from 2.4 to 3.4 ghz, this gave me a big performance boost. I have all sliders to the right, and on 2.4 ghz I would get framedrops to even below 12fps using addon aircraft in busy areas. With the overclock I get a rock-steady 20 fps (locked at 20).

Of course, without a nice graphic card you wouldn't want to set the sliders to the right. All water effects etc are calculated by the GPU. As mentioned before, you can get a kick-ass graphicscard (8800GT) for arround €250. If you, like me, buy a pre-overclocked version (overclocked with waranty) you can get results similar or even better than a 8800GTX ...

Also, as I am running windows vista 32bit and have 4 GB of ram, I setup my windows with a fix that allows it to allocate almost 3GB of ram to any application. FSX SP2 supports this fix by default so no further action has to be taken. Thanks to this fix I have NO out-of-memory errors left.

Conclusion: with a relatively cheap quadcore (q6600, with an easy overclock of 1GHZ) and 4GB of (nowadays) cheap RAM, I have a rock-stable FSX on vista 32, with all the nice dx10 effects (and bugs :/).
