Hi All I'm unable to install FSX SP2 because my graphics card isn't good enough - I'm sure you're all familiar with that one! I can't upgrade the graphics card as I'm running on a laptop so it's on board. Is there any way that for now I can fool CumulusX and WinchX into running on FSX SP1? Surely I could just install the required libraries and do away with the shading or something??? Thanks in advance chaps!

What factors determine whether a Cx thermal goes blue (i.e. no Cu)? In the Task 1 Wx (but with the 6000' Cu's set to global) probably three-quarters of the thermals are blue (well, if I click UnBlue, many more appear) I checked UnBlue and got this: And then unchecked UnBlue and the clouds quickly disappeared leaving me with this: Is there a way to set the weather so the thermals mostly have Cu's on top ? cheers B21

Hi folks, there is a new version, CumulusX! 1.2 on my website. Changes are: Improved shadow handling (yet not perfect) Automatic loading of settings provided by race and mission designers Back again: Thermals over ice and snow, but only over steep slopes. best regards, Peter PS: Those who had already downloaded the new version before the time stamp of this post should re-do it, because there was another minor fix in between.

I have REX, but I'm holding off install until I discover whether it's compatible with Cumulus X, and if so whether there's obvious cloud difference. Any clues?

Hi, I've just installed Cumulus X 1.5 and when I start it up my aircraft immediately jumps to a new location and it keeps doing this as I try to fly. Once I turn off the thermals I can fly normally. I have to confess I didn't remove the old version first, is this my problem?

Hi. I'm a big fan of previous releases, and just got back into it. CumulusX! will load correctly (via EXE.xml), but whenever I try to drag its window to another screen, or change a menu option, it seems to freeze. Trying again will show the "(not responding)" heading in the window title. I have Ultimate Terrain USA installed with my FSX, just to give it a slightly more realistic depiction of the scenery. For instance, the little town I live in doesn't even show up on the unaltered FSX, but it shows clearly (of course, not accurately) with Ultimate Terrain. How would this affect Cumulus X!? How about the various scenery adjustments that one trades off to get an acceptable frame rate - How do these affect the thermal generation (and I suppose Sim_probe also)? Thanks for the information. Your programs change the whole nature of FSX soaring. C. J. Klingman Briarcliff, TX

Hi all, This would probably be a Q for Peter - but anyone - chip in if you know how: In the previous version of CumulusX, one could remove the build in CumulusX clouds and replace them with the very small almost invisible FSX birds. I've made ends meat as a commercial pilot for a great many years and have been flying gliders in my almost not exscisting spare time too. So my vision is OK, and i find it amusing to look for these almost invisible FSX birds. Another thing is - although if feel ashamed to say so - together with FEX clouds, the CumulusX clods don't look so great - YET. I'm sure that Peter will make them eatable some day. And THANKS SO MUCH Peter for a FANTAST…

Hi Firstly I would like to thank you guys and congratulate you for your work on CumulusX!.Together with Simprobe it has vastly enhanced the enjoyment of soaring in FSX. Well that's the soft soap ... now the "BUT".... I like the idea of cloud shadows , but in mountain flying the shadows can quite often touch on a peak and jut out above you ! and even when on the ground they are so dark and the edges so sharp they look like holes in the ground . I'm not sure how you have created the shadows but could you not just do the same as the clouds and create a plane with a texture+alpha channel, but at the base of the thermal , that way it won't be seen from underneath a…

Hi everybody, CumulusX! 1.1. is approaching public beta. In my attempts to make thermal simulation more and more realistic, I've arrived at the point where installed scenery is getting more and more important. So in this release, in addition to waterbodies now also forests, and ice and snow play a role, meaning that comparable multiplayer operation conditions will depend ever more on equal scenery configuration, including such subtle things as landclasses. What do you think about it? Is it worthwhile to improve realism, or would you prefer more an easy setup for multiplayer and, perhaps, competition mode? (Of course I prefer realism :-) Cheers, Peter

Hi all - I'm getting the thread started for binky9 who's struggling to get CumulusX (and sim_probe) installed... Binky9 do you have Vista or XP ? How far have you got with the install so far ? Is it just the exe.xml edit you're worried about? If so have you at least found the folder the file goes in ? B21

Just wondering if anyone has had success installing CumulusX! on top of FSX Acceleration? I have: - FSX Accel on top of FSX RTM - .NET 3.0 installed (but also tried reinstalling 2.0 just in case) Don't really want to uninstall everything, then reinstall FSX RTM, SP1, Sp2, etc just to try CumulusX! On startup get: "CumulusX! 1.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." EventType: clr20r3 P1: cumulusx.exe P2:1.0.0.0 P3: 47dbcc19 P4: cumulusx P5: 1.0.0.0 P6: 47dbcc19 P7:13 P8:c6 P9: system.invalidoperationexception Running on a relatively recent Quad core system Anyone else running ok with Acceleration?

Hi Folks, First post, first questions. Last weekend after doing he FSX Soaring tutorials I tested some free flights and was pretty disappointed on the modelisation lift factors in FSX (thermals, ridge, and wave). So I fell on some tools, downloaded CumulsX and SimProbe and DG808S V3. It's much closer to what it should be now ! So let me first thank all those 3rd Party developpers for their great work. My questions are mostly about CUmulusX. 1. Is it possible to get rid of the cumulus created over the thermal areas ? I use REX wich has really excellent grafics and ebautiful clouds so the CumulusX cumulusses don't really match this quality and look bad in the sky. I thin…

Hey Peter I've sent an email but not sure it's got to you. I've written an instrument that *also* wants to control the sound and it needs to co-exist with CumulusX - can we discuss a tweak to CumulusX that would make it's control of 'VARIOMETER RATE' optional ? gracias, Ian

I've been reasearching sites and came accross this possible overlook and your site Peter. The download for the slope database tool say's SlopeDatabaseTool1.0.zip instead of the updated (If updated) Version1.0a. Is there a misread somewhere? Just wanted the most up to date version available since one of my posts had pointed to the download page for use with FS2004/CCS2004. Scott

I am having trouble with autostarting Cumulus X. It seems to work when I go into the modules folder and doubleclick on CumulusX.EXE but it will not start with FSX. Simprobe does not seem to work even when I manually start it. I have a red mark next to slope database when running CumulusX. I also do not experience the ridge lift. I have included my EXE.xml, I am hoping I did something wrong here that explains my trouble. Simprobe and CumulusX are both in Modules in FSX installation. Thanx in advance!!! :big_boss: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?> <SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0"> <SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0"&…

With Cumulus x enabled during a mission, is it a reasonable expectation that lift will be present in a particular location at roughly the same time from successive mission starts, or are all thermals totally random in location and time? Hodge

Hi I have some basic questions re Cumulus. I have read the other topics and cannot find answers. 1/ If I make a mission using cumulusx are the parameters I use also loaded at the users end when they run the mission. 2/ Would the same thermals be active each time the mission is run at the start or is there an randomisation involved 3/They must also have cumulusX running. 4/Is there anthing special I have to do in the mission for CumulusX parameters to be included in the mission. 5/I have breifly read the docs and it appears to create thermals and then they decay. Thanks Mike

Recently started playing around with CumulusX and must say I love it. I am just your average Joe as far as soaring (dont do it in real life) although I did complete 10 hours of training 20 years ago. I have followed the procedure of starting on a runway and then starting cumulusX, when I return to flight Sim X, I see the new clouds show up and off I go. It seems like after a while ALL the cumulus X clouds disappear...sometimes for along time (like 20 minutes) and just about when I am about to land, they reappear (not always though). Is there something I am missing in setup, attached is a screenshot of CumulusX, I think at the time I was having these problems I had t…
