CumulusX!

Discussion related to all aspects of this exciting new program that puts thermals in FSX and creates ridge lift using CCS slope files.

  1. Started by joshyedward,

After extracting cumulus X and running the installer the error message 'Cumulus X seems to have stopped working' etc. I do not have FSX ACC, and have reinstalled FSX completely. This along with Winch X fail to work at all. please help someone. Thanks a lot, Josh

Hello Peter, I am trying to download Cumulus X and all searches lead to http://luerkens.homepage.t-online.de/peter/index.html being the place to download. I follow the link on this page http://luerkens.homedns.org/CumulusX/CumulusX.1.8.0.zip which just times out on both firefox and IE. Any ideas? I prefer just to buy the latest versions of FSX addons that have an installer so if there is a pay for, get everything you need minimum amount of fuss to install version I will happily pay for that. I'm finding the Condor version of my home site Edensoaring a little bit low res compared with the latest FSX photo scenery of the Pennine ridges but obviously can't rid…

Has anyone been able to make CumulusX! work with Prepar3D yet?

Hi, Like the title tells I can't find any kind of lift even my CumulusX main screen looks like this: I have bought personal license to CumulusX and set everything up correctly by reading manuals. What am I missing in terms of finding thermals? Best regards, Teepa Ps. I use REXEssential as my weather engine. I don't know if that has anything to do with CumulusX

In view of the reasonable academic license, Prepar3D may becone what FSX used to be, at least for those eligible to acquire it. Now: Should CumulusX! be Prepar3D? What do you think? bests, Peter

I just recently found CumulusX! a couple of days ago. And Dr. Peter, you rock! Great program. As a U.S. licensed glider pilot and also a big fan of FSX, I was always quite disappointed that, except for a couple of missions, the vanilla version did not allow for ridge lift soaring. I trained at Dillingham Airfield at Mokuleia on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Dillingham is widely regarded as one of the premier ridge soaring location in the world due to the consistent moderate onshore winds that blow against the sea cliffs behind the airfield. Wicked cross winds for takeoffs and landings but that just makes you a better pilot! There is also decent thermals on calm…

Hi I have deleted my FSX.CFG and had FSX build a new CFG file from new as I was having various problems within FSX. I am now getting this message when FSX has loaded up. "There is a pending update of the Tow plane settings" "Should CumulusX! wait in the background after FSX has exited" Whats is this all about? How do I fix it?

Hello all! I'm a fresh new soaring pilot with questions to bug you! I have been using FS series for quite a while but haven't been trying soaring untill now. Now I use FSX, CumulusX!, Sim_Probe and a winch start program. What I was wondering is that does CumulusX! and sim_probe work with 3rd party weather addons like Active Sky Advanced for example? ASA tries to create thermals and stuff, but I don't know how accurately modelled they are. Couldn't find any info regarding ASA thermals or up/downdrifts anywhere besides their marketing text, so I'd prefer to use CumulusX! etc. for now. Still ASA provides quite nice visuals and overall weather environment so I'd like to u…

Hi, I have downloaded CumulusX and WinchX, however I can't make any of them working. When I run either .exe I immediatly get a "The program has stopped working" error. I've tried running them as administrator and in compitability mode with both Vista and XP SP3 without success. I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  10. I've been away from flight simulation for quite a while. I fly gliders for real, here in Portugal. In the past I never used FSX for gliding. As a matter of fact, flying for real and using Condor and SW did put an end to my MSFSX use. After comming back, I had to decide, since my machine is still the same - very out of sync with new standards - what to re-install. I installed Condor, and then decided to have a look at DiscusX! from Aerosoft. I was rather skeptical about it... At the very same time I re-discovered CumulusX!. Together, CumulusX! and Aerosoft's DiscusX are now the only 2 add-ons I have installled in FSX. I might re-install FSUIPC too. I have to …

Hei, First of all, thank you very much for this nice pice of software. If been out now several times with friends to multiplayer flights in the bavarian alps and it was always heaps of fun. The thermiks in all our simulator were fitting perfectly and it was a really nice experience. However, one question arose in me: Is it possible to tweak FSX or CumulusX somehow so that only CumulusX clouds are visible? I'm using REX, some of my friends use plain FSX clouds. So there's always a lot of other cumulus clouds around without thermik. It's for sure thrilling to search for the right clouds. But I was wondering, if it would be possible to only show the CumulusX ones. W…

This could well be old information for many, but if there are any reasonably experienced CumulusX pilots that know the basics of gliding pretty well but want an extra challenge for thermalling as well as aerobatics, I highly recommend the Discus-K model from Aerosoft. I've been flying the Discus-X model for a long while and assumed that the two were essentially identical but for some cosmetics, but for some reason I don't quite understand I think I was wrong. The Discus-K simulation has taken the enjoyment factor up another notch for me, as well as the difficulty. It is truly a nimble and responsive glider, beautiful to fly and is a nice test of gliding simulation skills.…

Maintenant un traduction est disponible de le manuel de CumulusX! a la faveur de notre ami Alain Lerouge. Téléchargement ici (1074kB) (I truly hope that my attempts to write something "en Français" are not too funny). best regards, Peter

  14. I had to post yet another report of my recent experience with both CumulusX and DiscusX on FSX2. I have to admit I was really unaware of how realist MSFS can become in as far as soaring / gliding is concerned. As a glider pilot for real, and aslo as a user of both Condorsoaring and Silent Wings (also of SFS as far back as 1994 :-)) I have to say that the only thing now lacking to complete the rather immersive and realistic environment created by CumulusX is proper mesh and landclass for my country - Portugal - as well as for Spain. I now can say that thermal centring, as well as ridge/slope flying is even more close to real in the CumulusX+ FSX combination then in eith…

  15. Started by jcomm,

While the manual states that thermal height can be made to adjust to terrain altitude, does this reflect on the height of the cloud bases as well? As far as I understand CumulusX! takes the altitude of the lowest cumulus layer in MSFS weather as a reference for the altitude of it's thermal clouds. Over mountains this would mean that the cloud base height would not be adjusted to the corresponding thermal height. Is this the case, or do clouds generated by CumulusX ave their bases higher over mountains?

I downloaded CumulusX the other day and have been trying to get the ridge/slope lift to work with not success at all. I had to uncheck the "Auto Thermal" and "Script Thermal" just so it wouldn't keep crashing. I know there is a fix for that by changing some root file somewhere but I'm more interested in getting the slope lift feature working. The main CumulusX screen shows that ridge lift is red so I know its not working. However, I've spent several flights to see if it was working even though its showing red and it doesn't work. The debug screen doesn't even show ridge lift conditions even though its the only thing checked off??? I've attached a screen shot pasted to a W…

Hi Peter and Beta Testers For CumulusX I wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas 2011! Have a drink on me. Without a shadow of a doubt CumulusX has been the most enjoyable software I have ever used on a PC. It is infinitely interesting especially when combined with real weather and terrain. I have fired it up again for the last month after my exams and am flying simulated cross country on the east coast of Australia. Wave-lift would be a dream but it sounds like a really hard computer science problem. I hope it is an enjoyable challenge! My processor is an i7-2600 3.4GHz if that gives any guide to how much computer power is readily available these days. Thank you sin…

... slightly frivolous, but might it be possible to modify the 'visualisations' of thermals to include the birds modelled as scenery objects in FSX, so that they can be seen to mark thermals particularly at lower altitudes. Do I think right, in that your cumulus cloud modelreplaced the default visualisation of thermals in FSX, in which case I wonder if the white birds (gulls?) present in FSX as optional scenery objects, might be made to present 'on the fly' where cumulusX generates a thermal. If these white birds could be seen, particularly nearerer the ground, say between 100 - 1000' they would act as a thermal marker, something which is not uncommon in my experience i…

Guess I must be a duffer, but I seem unable to get CumulusX to work at all. I've downloaded version 1.6 from Peter Lürkens' site, put it in a temp folder on my desktop as suggested, but when I run the install.cmd I get a command prompt window for less than a half second before it closes, and nothing in FSX changes. I tried installing NET 2.0 Runtime as the .pdf manual suggests, but running the dotnetfx.exe failed, showing an incompatibility with a previously installed version. Upon checking, my 'add/remove programs' list shows I have .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 all installed. I'm no computer whiz and my machine was built by an engineer frie…

  21. I just installed CumulusX in FSX and purchased a personal license for it. I love this program! I do have one problem with the Smart Towplane though. While I can change the towplane to any aircraft that I have installed in FSX using CumulusX, I cannot seem to make the towplane fly right-hand tow patterns. All that it does is fly left-hand patterns, no matter whether I select the right-hand pattern or not. This is towing out of airfields that have no high terrain on either side of the airport. The Smart Towplane is suppsed to fly a pattern, then fly to the nearest visible lift area, but all that it does is fly the left hand pattern without seeking out any lift. Also, after …

Peter, we had a chance to get some screenshots of this. In the course of testing multiplayer missions with my friend DC, we noticed that we were not seeing the same thermal clouds in same locations. This was very perplexing, since the mission included a .CMX file, and also ensures we both spawn at exactly the same time. Initially we though it was because he has the UTX add-on scenery, so we repeated the test with that disabled. We had an airspawn, so landed, turned off Competition Mode, then made top down screenshots. You can see there is some matchups, but a lot of discrepancies. Can't figure this out and don't know how to approach it from here. Also both using FSX, m…

Scroll down for English text. …

Hi Peter at al. I am a member of the UK VGA (UK Virtual Gliding Association) and have been conducting some multiplayer experiments with other members using CumulusX! "MP Soaring Clock". My current, albeit limited understanding, of the pseudo-random generation of thermals in CumulusX! is that the random generation of thermals is seeded from a combination of landclass, mesh, certain weather conditions, and date/time. Also of course the CumulusX! settings must be identical. Most of these requirements we found to be relatively easy to control and match between participants except for time across multiple time zones. We are currently working on ways to minimise the time…
