Help on Training Missions - by Mathijs Kok

This one is really simple if you have ever flown a simulator.
As this might be your first flight however it is a good idea to configure the simulator correctly. When you intend to take the simulator serious you should make the right decisions here so you don't have to adapt to different settings later.
GAME PROGRESS
Show Navigation Icons is a good idea because when you really get lost (won't happen in this first training) it will show the right direction in the simplified Compass Icon. Simplified Gauges will be very welcome in your first flight because the real gauges are not easy to read and often just outside your view. Subtitles are a must because they will help a lot when the mission is introduced.
HELP FOR PILOT
As we are learning to fly let's keep the engine management as simple as possible. Just starting the engine manually makes sense.
SIMPLIFICATIONS
This where you can really help your career along. By leaving the simplifications off you get to feel the aircraft much better. You will switch to the more complex modeling anyway, so why not do it here where you are not asked to do complex things? Only the engine management, as above could be kept simple.
Tips to complete the training
1.When you are watching the video that introduces the training mission you can press [control]-[i] to remove the simple icons.
2.When you are watching the video that introduces the training mission you can move the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen and skip the video section.
3.When you are in the cockpit press [control]-[i] again to show the simple icons.
4.If you find the mission too hard repeat it with the Simplified airplane physics set
Training Mission 6
This one is really hard one, expect to spend as few hours with this one. Every minute spend here will pay off later on.
Your first adversary is pretty high so after take-off climb as fast as you can, getting closer is not nearly as important as getting to at least the same altitude.
After a while you will see the icon indicating the enemy and you will know how far he is. You have to be at his level if you are within 1000 meters because he just loves to dive head-on to get the first hits in. Unless you set up the fight so you got at least some advantages you will be fighting an uphill battle (literally). If you are able to shoot the first single fighter down, you progress to the second waypoint where two fighters await you. Keeping track of the complete tactical situation is a lot more complex
and it is easy to get forced into a defensive posture. Also a very good training of course. When you are dog fighting you have to know where the enemy is and where you are, if you are about to hit the ground etc. The best way to see the enemy is to use the
Camera Padlock: enemy air view (this is F8 with default key commands), the best way to see where you are going is with the standard cockpit view (F1). As you will need to alternate the two it is best to have them both under your fingers on the joystick.
GAME PROGRESS
Simplified Gauges are a good idea as it is near impossible to quickly scan the instruments. As you will get much more feedback in a real open cockpit (wind and noise) this is a defendable simplification. Aiming helpers are nice but not really helpful, start with them but disable them after a few kills.Padlock is needed as it is real hard to even find the enemy without padlock. Subtitles are a must because they will help a lot when the mission is introduced.
HELP FOR PILOT
By this stage you should be able to handle the systems and nothing should be ticked here. However, in the first attempts it could be wise to simplify the engine so you can concentrate on the fight.
SIMPLIFICATIONS
By now you should not need to have anything here activated. When you do you could run into problems you don't know how to deal with later on.

I've tried a few times and get hit by AAA long before I get to the balloon every time.

In training mission 4, what altitude should we be heading to the front line at?
I've tried a few times and get hit by AAA long before I get to the balloon every time.
You should try to fly above the 1000 metres, and fly a zigzag figure.
cheers,
Rens

I have given it about 9 attempts with only one shoot down and I have been killed 9 times

In Mission 3, I can not stall, I get slower and slower, I pull the stick back, when I reach the point of stall, the nose goes down (i still pull back), I gain speed, evering think is ok - nice in a real plane, but how could I stall to complete the mission?
Thanks
Gottel
Hi Gottel,
That one kept me bugging too, gain speed before the last ring, fly through it full throttle, pull back on the stick, and keep throttling, till it drops sideways, release throttle, yank the rudder to the right, and you should good to go.
Worked for me. (after 3 attempts
hope this helps.
cheers,
Rens

Hi Gottel,
What is the exact criteria for getting through Training mission 3?
This is my 10th attempt, always fail but don't know why. No problem at all with previous missions.
I start, turn right, fly through the rings on the river, turn left, and through the hoop up high, have to circle up to it as it's so steep, and then diving, remembering to shutter the radiator, and idle the engine, through the bottom hoop pull out, up to the top hoop, turn left, fly at 92K/h through the four hoops, and stall and spin from that height at the last hoop, then fly back to the aerodrome, land, and fail every time. What am I missing?
I fly it exactly as it's shown/narrated to me, and unless I do something different I'll keep failing, but I don't know what to do different.
Any tips?

I think that there is no possibility (for me) to solve trainig three. I tried it ten times, but the last ring (stall) doesn`t disappear. I tried everything mentioned here, through the ring with full throttle and with no throttle, pull the stick back and so on.....
What am I doing wrong ?????

I was managing to stall precisely at the last hoop time after time, but what I was not doing (and you will only find this out if you have captioning on) is that I was pulling out of the stall straight away as is your instinct, but you need to let the Spad spin out of control for quite a while, the captioning will tell you exactly when you can pull out of the spin and return to base ... that part is not easy, but once you know what you are supposed to do, it can be done
So, on to the next training mission ... I'm really enjoying RoF.

On the pre mission screen where you can select easy mode, Auto Radiator etc you will see a button for Subtitles (in the top left i think), Select it.
You will also see subtitles in the training mission briefing movie now as well as during flight.
Leave them selected all the time, as it then shows various messages within all missions as to objectives complete etc.

OK ... you need to turn on captioning for this training mission at least, it tells you exactly what to do at the last hoop

Is there supposed to be a time limit on this one? I am not great at shooting ground targets, but eventually destroyed the first two vehicles (the plane seems too 'twitchy' with my controls) and then I moved off to the tanks. I destroyed one, after a struggle to keep them located (TrackIR coming to this pc soon!)I bombed one. On the run in for the second I was suddenly transported back to the airfield

Does it not tell you on the briefing if its time limited. I'm still practising my stall. As for being twitchy thats possibly the planes characteristics of the day

No, it doesn't indicate a time limit. I guess I'll have to keep practising and get quicker.
Mission 3: strangely I can stall quite well when I don't want to
