hedaew 47
Even not very experienced with X-Plane 11 I finally decided to take part in the "Around the World in Eighty Days" event with this sim and using jarDesign A330 as aircraft. My flight plan schedule will be EGLL to HECA HECA to VABB VABB to VECC VECC to VHHH VHHH to RJTT RJTT to KSFO KSFO to KJFK KJFK to EGLL Concerning logging I will miss such a tool like FlightKeeper. Perhaps some of the participants can give some advice.
hedaew 47
Luckily I just finished my first step on this tour. This was my first landing at HECA and the sight was poor and the wind was difficult (335 / 15). Two miles before landing I could see the runway (5C), so I decided to land manually (bad landing). The default airport in XP11.05 is very dissapointing. Flightplan was: EGLL DET2G DET UL6 DVR UL9 KONAN UL607 KOK UM150 UTABA UL607 ELMEM UN606 OTRES UT307 DIRAB T307 PEVAL/N0484F410 DCT PETAK UL607 KEA UN132 KUMBI L612 BLT A16 CVO DCT HECA Time table: 09:45 GMT at the gate 10:39 GMT takeoff 14:55 GMT landing 15:06 GMT aircraft secured About the weather (I still use the weather as XP11 downloads as real weather) in short notes (details will follow): North of the Alps it was clouded, in the second part of this flight beginning south of the Alps to south of Greece it was mostly clear, and in the final part cloud density was increasing until landing. The cloud coverage was not similar to SkyVector or VentuSky; but wind directions and strength in the sim were very similar to VentySky.

hedaew 47
Since it was many years ago that I saw the film with David Niven I didn't remember the route of Phileas Fogg in his journey around the world. And my decision to take part at this wonderful event there wasn't enough time for preparation. But in the long pause after finishing the first part from EGLL (London Heathrow) to HECA (Cairo) and the next part I now have a little more information about his route. Therefore I skipped my original plan to fly directly from HECA to VABB and instead to fly in to steps with an intermediate stop in OYAA. I think that comes much closer to Fogg's journey. My flightplan for the flight from HECA (Cairo) to OYAA (Aden) is : HECA DCT SOLAM A727 LXR P751 ALEBA UP751 PSD UR776 LADEN B413 TAZ DCT OYAA According to SkyVector this is a distance of 1.321,9 nm. hedaew 47
Flight HECA to OYAA (2017-10-14): Weather forecasts: at HECA for planned time of takeoff (7:45 GMT): Wind 350°@4 kts Temperature 21°C / 70°F Pressure 1017 / 30.03 Visibility 1,2 nm at OYAA for expected time ot landing (10:45 GMT): Wind 76°@6 kts Temperature 24°C / 76°F Pressure 1012 / 29.87 Visibility more than 10 nm Takeoff : 8:06 GMT (wind 325°@6 kts) Landing : 11:18 GMT (wind 48°@7 kts) Low visiblity during takeoff at HECA and surprisingliy while landing at OYAA too. During flight at cruise level nice weather without clouds and optimal visibilty. Wind overall very stable from south western direction during first part of the flight (Egypt and north of Sudan), then changing to south east over the Red Sea and finally from eastern direction over Yemen. hedaew 47
Due to technical problems I couldn't continue my travel to Mumbai on the next day. That comes surprising after two successful flights with the updated environment : XP11.05 and the A332 was updated to JD330 V2.2RC1 Today I was able to fly the second part of the journey from Cairo (HECA) to Mumbai (VABB). hedaew 47
Weather forecast (AS16) at OYAA for planned time of takeoff (6:13 GMT): Wind 80°@6 kts Temperature 24°C / 76°F Pressure 1012 / 29,87 Visibility more than 10 nm at VABB for expected time ot landing (10:15 GMT): Wind 240°@8 kts Temperature 30°C / 86°F Pressure 1010 / 29.83 Visibility 0.9 nm Takeoff : 6:13 GMT (wind 308°@4 kts shortly after takeoff; tailwind instead of headwind ?!!!, pressure 30.11) Landing : 10:42 GMT (wind 240°@12 kts, pressure 29.73) This flight was expected to be routine flight despite low visibility at VABB because of the expected ILS support while landing. As the flight path leads mostly over water there was not many to see during the cruise flight. So overall not very exciting outlook. But it turned out to be otherwise. On one hand the flight took much longer than estimated because there was one go around due missing ILS signal while aproaching RWY 27 along the STAR and the terminal phase. And there was no chance to land safely on visual basis because of the fog at Mumbai. Most likely more experienced pilots will be able to avoid this problem because they see the problem with hills and mountains east of the airport, which probably may disturb the ILS signal. With this in mind the second attempt finally was successful even there was a lost of the ILS signal for a short period of time again. .

hedaew 47
I checked my ILS problem : It was just a wrong frequency and not the topology. But I cannot tell the reason why as I selected runway 27 with appropiate approach. Normally the ILS frequency should be selected correctly this way. On the second approach I corrected it according to the actual charts. Maybe a problem with the installed airac data which I installed.

hedaew 47
Step 3 on the tour : Mumbai (VABB) to Kolkata (VECC) It's time to log my flight in my diary. Flight planning and preparation I dismissed my first planning to take a short stop at Allahabad (VEAB) as I noticed that it's a military airport and I didn't expect to get any permission to land there. On the other hand this airport scenery isn't inviting very much. But to come as close as possible to the route Phileas Fogg might have taken I decided to fly towards VEAB before changing the direction to VECC. So the resulting flight plan (constructed using PFPX) was: VABB KAKPO Q17 BPL DCT KJ DCT BN DCT RC DCT JJS VECC, passing cities like Bhopal (BPL), Varanasi (BN; it's old name was Benares, which is on the banks of the Ganges), Ranchi (RC) and Jamshedpur. For this step I wanted to use another aircraft : an A320-271 NEO by jarDesign. I like this aircraft despite the implemented copilot. This copilot only checks the check lists but doesn't offer any other assistance like the copilot in the actual Aerosoft Airbus models. Furthermore I have a problem with speed constraints in the jarDesign model. At least I do not know how to define them. Weather forecasts (according to AS 2016 ) 2017-10-24: at VABB for planned time of takeoff (17:40 GMT): Wind 40°@3 kts Temperature 30°C / 86°F Pressure 1013 / 29,91 Visibility 1.9 nm at VECC for expected time ot landing (20:40 GMT): Wind 0°@0 kts Temperature 28°C / 82°F Pressure 1011 / 29.85 Visibility 1.4 nm So the visibility was expected to be low at takeoff and landing. Since the flight was done during night time it didn't really matter.

hedaew 47
Step 4 on the tour, first part : VECC (Kolkata) to WSSS (Singapore), 2017-10-29, est. 1666 nm On the travel from Mumbai to Hong Kong I follow the route of Phileas Fogg with a stop in Singapore. So this is the first flight of two on this step. After using the Airbus A320NEO on the last flight i change back to Airbus A330-243. Route planning was done with PFPX based on a performance file created by flyprecisely@hotmail.com. Until now I think that the XP-variant performance is slightly different according to the given performance file. Especially the fuel comsumption is much lower in XP with the effect of higher landing weight. But on this tour my aircraft is not fully loaded, so this should be no problem anyway. Resulting flight plan (including SID and STAR): VECC DOPI2E DOPID W112 DABEN M770 OBMOG L515 PUT B579 VPL W531 VIH A464 ARAMA ARAM1A WSSS Depicted flight plan using sky vector: Please login to display this image. hedaew 47
Tour step 6: RJTT (Tokyo - Haneda) to KSFO (San Francisco) 2017-11-26, est. 4.643 NM With this step the second half of this world tour has started. Since Fogg's transit from Toyko to San Francisco by ship took about 3 weeks, it was not necessary to hurry on this flight as I planned to fly an long haul trip. This time I had the idea to simulate a regular flight with the aircraft almost fully loaded: This connection seems to be best suited for my purpose: Flight No: JL2/JAL2 (Japan Airlines) STD 10:45Z/19:45L STA 20:00Z/12:00L Aircraft: Boeing 777-346ER In XP11 as aircraft I would fly the VMAX Boeing 777-300ER. Since I flew the PMDG model in FSX many times, I am still not so familiar with the VMAX model compared to PMDG. And indeed it took to trials to complete this trip because on my first flight I suffered a fuel leak warning short after takeoff from RJTT. In turned out that the center tank had a fuel leak and was quickly empty, so it was not possible to finish this flight. I had to return back to RJTT. Ironically I had to dump fuel to avoid flying endless loops to reach a safe landing weight. More wisely I turned off the option "custom failures" of my VMAX model on the second flight. This second flight was executed on 2017-11-26. Some planning data for both mentioned flight: 1. The deviated first flight (estimated flight duration: 8:32h and estimated flight distance 4.607 nm): Planned Route on 2017-11-18: RJTT SYE Y11 JD Y88 DAIGO Y889 OATIS OTR3 PUTER/N0500F320 A590 POXED/N0494F330 DCT AGEDI R591 ASPIN DCT SYA R591 AMOND A342 CRYPT DCT 54N160W 51N150W 47N140W/N0489F350 42N130W DCT VESPA DCT REDWD DCT AMAKR KSFO 2. hedaew 47
Tour step 7: KSFO (San Francisco) to KJFK (New York) 2017-12-09 - 2017-12-11, est. 2.388 NM Constructing flight plans for this step I tried to gather some information about the travelling of Phileas Fogg by train. One aspect was the route ot the railroad then named Union Pacific Railroad (or Overland Route), which was opened 1869 (s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overland_Route_(Union_Pacific_Railroad) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Transcontinental_Railroad ). The other aspect was where Fogg's journey paused. But finally my chosen steps are not an exact match. I decided to divide the travel into three parts: KSFO (San Francisco) to KSLC (Salt Lake City) KSLC to KOMA (Omaha, Nebraska) KOMA to KJFK (JFK Airport in New York City) Visually this three parts look like following: Please login to display this image. Please login to display this image. Please login to display this image. Due to private circumstances I planned to execute all three flight during the past weekend. And I have selected the Airbus A320-271 again for this transcontinental journey since I used it to fly from Mumbai to Colcata. Flight specific data will follow soon.
