Advice for FSX Friendly PC - Belgium/Germany

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have decided to get rid of my old Dell Windows XP computer running FS2004 as it can no longer cope with the more advanced new scenery addons.

I live in Belgium and would like some advice of a good (not too expensive) PC to run FSX and all the latest addons including the larger Mega-Airports. I also love AES so I think X-Plane is out of the question for me.

Also I would like some advice about the best format of FSX to use? Is it still better to source a DVD version? I am very behind the times so want to get back up and running.

I have been looking at Mediamarkt and some other places in both Belgium and Germany to buy a PC but I really have no idea. Any advice would be great.

Many thanks,

Simon

If you want FSX, just get FSX:Steam edition, by far the easiest and best 'original' FSX.

For that you need a core i5 CPU, get one that is not locked, 8Gb ram and a 4Gb graphics card, anything in the 200 dollar range will be fine. If you want to use a more modern simulator, like P3D that soon will be 64 bits you might go for a better graphics card and 16Gb of memory. An SSD is almost obligatory these days, nobody wants to load FS from a HDD.

Hi Mathijs,

Thank you so much for your advice. Is it possible to install AES and manual addons such as traffic files and AFCAD adjustments using the steam addition? My FS2004 has been so heavily modified now that I am kind of sad to see it go but the computer I have is just far too old and FS2004 is pretty much obsolete.

Would the standard version of FSX: Steam edition be enough? There seem to be lots of different versions: http://store.steampowered.com/app/314160/Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_X_Steam_Edition/

Thanks,

Simon

I must warn you that AES is pretty much the only addon that dont work in FSX:SE. Manually installing is no problem and yes standard FSX:SE is enough to start with.

First of all you say you want to buy a pre-built computer? That is definitely not a good idea! Best buy a pile of parts and build your own. Pre-built computers are very often crap and never use the best hardware. If you build your own computer (or have it built for you) you can pick every single item that suits you best without having to compromise. With pre-built computers there's always something that isn't completely the way you want it to be, build your own computer and everything is exactly the way you want it to be.

I would discourage you to buy computer hardware in a general electronics store like MediaMarkt. They're great for tvs and microwave ovens, but computers are a different piece of cake. Better go to a specialised computer store like Alternate, they know what they're talking about and can give you the best advice. They got a wide selection of high quality components at a descent price.
