From one holiday island to another: Olbia to Djerba.

I must admit that I don't see the appeal of Djerba as a holitday destination, though. Who wants to spend time on a desert island, flat as a pan?

2017-05-26 [120.a]: Olbia [LIEO] to Djerba-Zarsis [DTTJ], Tunisia

While doing the walk-around, on the "Eastern" side of the airplane I realized that AOA vane is only two or three countries away from representing our origin and destination.  I wish I noticed that when the paint was being designed so I could have adjusted it.2017-5-26_21-4-56-740.thumb.jpg.9df7b9028caaf4e1b81c272dd3a901ff.jpg

Anyway, I am flying like the old Aeroflot pilots who used to keep Moscow time wherever they were.  So, early morning or evening flights now.

More trouble with the right engine.  Could not get a good start, which caused a 30 minute delay.  But we finally got that sorted out.  (More below).

LIEO LABOM Q125 DEC M858 DOPEL UG869 TBK UZ153 JBA DTTJ

When I saw this "crazy-eight" departure on the screen during the pre-flight, I immediately switched seat belts from "auto" to "on."  I did not want the stews to be telling the pax that they could get up and move around, not until after we got straight and level.

Passing by the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari.  The city and harbor have been known since ancient times, even before the Roman Empire.2017-5-26_23-5-37-647.thumb.jpg.12ec0d9eb8c3474f786d65dbdf9c6b5c.jpg

Djerba looked like it was in the middle of nothing.  A holiday destination?  I guess beaches.2017-5-26_23-59-26-463.thumb.jpg.ff24045509974c05cbac3d577ea68e81.jpg

2017-05-27 [120.b]: Djerba-Zarsis [DTTJ] to Monastir [DTMB], Tunisia

Overnight in Djerba, then returning a little northward to Monastir.

DTTJ BISKO SFX UA411 ELJEM DTMB

No pictures from this flight.  They seemed to have been lost during transfer.

----------------------------------------

Simmer's Note:  The problem with the engine was caused by one of my Saitek throttles still being assigned to the engine 2 mixture control.  So long as it was not moved during the flight, all remained good.  But, if it was touched, that simulated a fuel cut-off.  Fortunately, I discovered this before un-installing the Airbus.

Hi friends!

Leg 116 completed: LIEO-DTMB

Back to Africa!

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

17052810211510968215064760.jpg

Saturday May 27th, 2 PM at gate 1 at Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport, we are ready for our today destination: Africa again! Our destination is Tunisia, thus crossing the Mediterranean Sea, and more precisely, Monastir, a major city resort. This will be a flight from a tourist resort to another one.

17052810211810968215064761.jpg

At 5,300 feet climbing to 8,000 feet, with a view on Olbia, its bay and, in the background, the heights of Corsica.

17052810212310968215064762.jpg

At our cruise altitude (FL350), heading southeast, we pass by Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia, that is located at the extreme south of the island. In the background, we can already see the African coastline. As said by dcda, a harbor funded before the Roman Empire by the Phenicians.

17052810205610968215064755.jpg

Fifteen minutes later, we fly over the Gulf of Tunis, the city can be seen on our right in the distance. On the other side of the Cap Bon Peninsula, ahead of us, is the Gulf of Hammamet. Our destination is on the other side of this last gulf. The Cap Bon Peninsula is a bit famous in history because, there in 468, a huge land and sea battle took place between the Roman Empire and the Vandals, that ended with a huge defeat for the Roman Army (about a hundred ships sunk and 10 000 killed). This defeat is said to be the beginning of the decline of the Western Roman Empire.

17052810210010968215064756.jpg

Heading south and maintaining 6,000 feet we fly over the lagoon of Sebkhet Assa-Jiriba that lies along the coast north of Monastir.

17052810210410968215064757.jpg

In long finale for runway 07 at Monastir airport, we fly over the city of M’Saken. The city of Monastir is on the other side of the airport, close to the Sea.

17052810211010968215064758.jpg

Parked at gate Papa-7 after a 1-h flight from Olbia. We have now a full week to spend here … enjoying beaches and sun!

Did three flights yesterday.

From Lugano to Calvi to Olvia to Monastir.

Nice weather and beautiful sceneries. I planned my routes so I could stay around 5000ft and enjoy it the most.

From  Menorca to Gibraltar, overflying Mallorca and Ibiza, then on to Spain. Kept it around 5000ft and visually following the coast towards The Rock.

P.S.

For some reason I dont have the interactive road traffic crossing the runway at Gibraltar X. I've posted a support request at Aerosoft, but if anyone has ever encounterd this and solved it I'd be happy to hear how.

It's time to fly and to report a bit - I'm (again) behind the schedule anyway as I wasn't keen heating my workspace here too much... I preferred the shadow of my terrace and reading the English translation of Liu Cixin's "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy, consisting of  "The Tree Body Problem", "The Dark Forrest", and "Death's End", quite pile of paper (however, ebooks are available as well).

Heading now for Sardinia's Olbia, back again to Italy (any IFR would have doubled the flight time anyway and the weather was nice).

BTW, all European sceneries are overlaid by Scenery Solution's UTX Europe (v2).

The next leg to Monastir is already competed, but will be reported after reaching the Balearic Islands.

It's hot! That's it!

The best I can remember of Djerba had been a wild ride with a catamaran while having a gusty 7 bft offshore wind bringing sand from the Sahara. I'll never forget my daughter crying while I balanced the boat on our portside hull while trying to get the pressure from the sail. We returned to the shore without turning turtle but all other did staying outside.

Many clouds over the Mediterranean, a rough ride while approaching Menorca and after all surrounded by masses of EasyJet birds...

However, even if it might become worse, I'll do the other Balearic main islands as well... :o

Here are those legs missing in order to include all alternatives around Mallorca. What I haven't mentioned the last time is the author of the Menorca . This file doesn't correct the elevation differences around the airport and I did it myself by using again Don Grovenstin's very helpful tool "Terrain Sculptor" for concealing the resulting cliffs.

Okay, now both remaining hops of this series:

Leg #126.2    LEMH-LEPA (Palma de Mallorca), B738, 98 nm, 0:26 hrs, MAME1C MAMEB MAME1M

LEMH again: (AFCAD: Steve Morrell, AVSIM: fsx_afcad-_lemh_menorca.zip) - sufficient traffic for my taste...

Approaching Palma de Mallorca (AFCAD: Ray Smith, AVSIM, fsx_lepa_rs.zip)

After a short turn a long flight to Ibiza, more than doubling the direct distance due to the wind direction.

Leg #126.3    LEPA-LEIB (Ibiza), B738, 138nm, 0:26 hrs, CASO1L DCT IZA DCT IBA ILSY06

Approaching the island.

A slight turn over Ibiza Town and its harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when passing IZA NDB

Flying the required teardrop outbound before the final right turn. The salinas , visible left of the aircraft's tail, are likely much older than each other facility around.

It's time for a rest. Half of EasyJet's fleet is clustered in my back...

See ya later around Spain's mainland.

Hi guyz,

Leg 117 completed : DTMB-LEMH

To Balearic Islands!

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

Saturday June 3rd, 2 PM at gate Papa-7 at Monastir – Habib Bourguiba international airport, Tunisia. We are ready for our new flight, this time to Balearic Islands, Spain. We will cross longitudinally the western part of the Mediterranean Sea from Sardinia to Menorca.

At 5,000 feet climbing to 8,000 feet, we have a last look at the small peninsula on which Monastir city is built, and on the right, the airport and its runway lying close to the Monastir Lake, which is known for its salt marsh.

Twelve minutes later, we fly over Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia, at FL340, climbing at FL360. The view shows the large city, its airport (DTTA), its harbor, the water bodies, from left to right, of the Bay of Tunis, the Lake of Tunis and , at right, the Lake Sijoumi.

Heading northwest, we fly by the southwestern tip of Sardinia Island, Cape Teulada. The beach that can be seen is called White Sands beach, perfectly understandable.

At FL360, heading west over the Mediterranean Sea, somewhere between Sardinia and Balearic islands, a cloudy sky even at this altitude.

After descending to 1,600 feet, we enter the finale for an ILS approach to runway 01. View of the south shore of the rather flat Menorca Island.

Finale for runway 01. Some ships and the small harbor of Binisafua is just ahead.

Parked at gate 19 at the international airport of Menorca – Mahón after a flight of about 1h10 from Monastir. With the time lag, and despite we flew westward, it’s 4:30 PM here. We have a full week to visit this preserved island of the Balearic Archipelago.

That's all folks!

Enjoy great flights.

Philippe
