Windows 10 Gaming mode.

For those who have not yet discovered it themselves, since the 'spring update' (April 2017) Windows 10 has something called the 'gaming mode'. With the FSX or P3D window active, you just hit Windows-G and after a short time you get a popup with the  question "Is this a game". Just click the box and you get a Xbox like short menu that need no further action. Just close it. Now Windows knows that your sim is a game and remembers that for now and the future until you swich it off.

From now on Windows will not do anything that is not necessary to keep as much processing power to the game as possible. So no longer something like a Windows Update spoiling the fun of flying.

I just got some doubts about my leg count depending a bit on the common view here about how to define a leg. I decided myself to count each named possibility/combination/alternative, only sub-deviding those not mentioned in the original plans. It's not really consistent with my former procedure that looked only for one of the final alternatives if existent. This would not fit for the last two weeks so I started in this case an "island count".

Leaving Greece now towards Microsoft's East European Desert...

Leg #117    LGTS-LUKK (Chinisau), 476 nm, B772, 1:15 hrs, ODIK1B ODIKO UM987 EVIVI Q24 SOMOV M987 SORDU N180 DENAK P740 KODRU T34 LIPTA LIPT1A

I blocked half of the apron with my big bird, but wasn't keen taking the freight gate.

The scenery is Drzewiecki Design's free demo "LUKK_chisinau_x_demo-1", having some flaws in the gate numbering if being compared with the charts and doubtful areas at the airport's "front yard" (PAX view). The latter obviously would be fixed by the full version being covered then with custom objects.

Hi Dirk,

Hopefully it doesn't forget switching off all the processes communicating in the background with "Mother" in order to provide the user with personalised features (or so).

Hi Axel,

The past two days I used that feature and (a bit to my surprise, knowing Microsoft) it works perfectly well. Not that I suddenly get a significant better performance, but it's nice to know that MS/W10 is not doing spooky things in the background that 'eat up' my scarce resources.  ;-)

A bit ahead of the 'official schedule' (not that I'm the only one) I decided to do the last two legs of this batch to Split today (Sunday, 16th of April).

Leg 111 (or whatever the number is): LUKK to LHBP, 403 Nm on FL240/FL200

Route: LUKK NUNTA P90 UDSIG L140 NARKA LHBP

Duration: 1h36m   Takeoff: 10:19z   Landing: 11:56z   Fuel used: 1673 kgs.

Metar departure: LUKK 160900Z 20008KT 9999 FEW049 14/09 Q1009 R26/120095 NOSIG

Metar destination: LHBP 161100Z 29022KT CAVOK 14/M01 Q1013 NOSIG

Takeoff was from RWY26 and then the NUNT1P SID. The cloud ceiling was a bit higher than announced in the ATIS at 7,000 ft. We were 'on top' at FL120 having a 43 kts headwind. Not so nice.

2017-4-16_12-44-2-360.thumb.jpeg.0c4d8853ff210c5452bb0ff038823774.jpeg

So I descended to go for what AS16 initially adviced: FL200. A bit less full efficient and still a 38 kts headwind and the same groundspead. After a while I spotted a few TC's to the right of my track:

2017-4-16_13-10-59-748.thumb.jpeg.57840656e9d2a5c4e17a40298eb46a40.jpeg

For a short periode I had to flip the 'fasten seatbelts' switch. But only five minutes after that VNAV was active, so I had to switch it on again for the ILS approach for RWY31R.

and then, after lunch,

Leg 112 (the final one of this batch): LHBP to LDSP, 386 Nm on FL220

Route: LHBP GILEP DIMLO MAXUR ROKSA UL868 GISER L862 OKLAX LDSP

Duration: 1h29m   Takeoff: 13:02z   Landing: 14:32z   Fuel used: 1485 kgs.

Metar departure: LHBP 161230Z 31020KT CAVOK 14/M02 Q1013 NOSIG

Metar destination: LDSP 161330Z 35006KT 9999 FEW058 16/12 Q1011 NOSIG

Pushback:

2017-4-16_14-52-37-637.thumb.jpeg.1e0f65a40b87c63b93301e02407556f1.jpeg

Takeoff from RWY31L, then the GILE3D SID with a final limit at FL160. So I had 22 Nm on that level to go before I could climb further to FL220.

2017-4-16_15-5-0-997.thumb.jpeg.9adc7a4d3f6cda1c6013e77489babe89.jpeg

...climbing out over Budapest

It started to get bumpy north of Zadar. There were CB's & lightning, but following our tracks we stayed just outside the clouds.

2017-4-16_15-49-33-565.thumb.jpeg.9f408f357fbe4d809b4afce42ae3f1e6.jpeg

A while before the descend it was done with the bad weather so I could prepare myself for the OKLA3C STAR and the ILSY05 approach. My Vapp was 139 kts because I was still a bit heavy, but after landing and hard on the brakes I could make it for the second exit.

The scenery is from ORBX's free European airports:

2017-4-16_16-41-2-603.thumb.jpeg.02248774be0a7b1543486a0bc8b61601.jpeg

So, the Croatian Q400 is back home and I am off for a long vacation.

Happy Landings,

Dirk

All right, I've landed at Split.

Leg #118    LUKK-LHBP (Budapest), 450 nm, B772, 1:11 hrs,  NUNT1P NUNTA P90 UDSIG L140 NARKA DCT ABONY ABON4R

Leg #119    LHBP-LDSP (Split), B772, 298 nm, 0:55 hrs, B7 PUST3D VEBAL UL196 UNIPA DCT OKLAX OKLA3B

Budapest took me only two hours for pimping it a bit. I used UTX EUR v2 as basis (very simple, but I didn't want staying too long there anyway).

Split is made from the pictures and charts, nonetheless by using default objects and buildings (except the lamps). After landing half of the airliner's stands had been blocked by GA and meanwhile I geve them some off-side place for parking. The picture is taken before and I'm just turning in.

And the final flight is in, a wonderful one into Split, overflying a sea of hills and clouds before landing at the Pearl of the Adriatic.

Hi guyz, the next legs ...

Leg 110a completed: LGSR-LGTS

To Macedonia

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

17041811230110968214988977.jpg

Saturday April 15th, 2PM, we are departing Santorini for Thessalonica; at 12,000 feet climbing to 16,000 feet heading northwest. At the background, we still see the heights of Crete Island. A lonely cruising ship is mooring in Fira Bay.

17041811230410968214988978.jpg

View of the east coast of the Greek Peninsula from our cruise altitude (FL360). We see the Gulf of Megara just ahead, with the Attica Peninsula at right and the Peloponnese Peninsula at left. Behind the small Isthmus of Corinth, we can see the Golf of Corinth.

17041811230810968214988980.jpg

View of Athens from FL360.

17041811231310968214988981.jpg

Over Aegean Sea, we cross an incoming traffic just a 1,000 feet below. This is a Boeing 737. The traffic is dense in this area.

17041811231810968214988982.jpg

At FL320, we have begun our descent while the Chalkidiki Peninsula is on sight with its three fingers protruding in Aegean Sea. At the extreme point of the third ‘finger’ (the Acte Peninsula) we see the high Mount Athos (2 033 m).

17041811232310968214988983.jpg

View from 14,000 feet of the Potidea Canal, built by the Macedonian, around 350BC, it is still used to cross Kassandra Peninsula without navigating around it.

17041811232810968214988984.jpg

At 3,900 feet, heading north, over the North of Chalkidiki Peninsula. View of the Volvi Lake with the city of Profitis. Thessalonica is on our left.

17041811224910968214988974.jpg

Preparing to enter finale for ILS approach to runway 16. View of Thessalonica and its bay.

17041811225410968214988975.jpg

Parked at gate Tango-1 at Thessalonica-Macedonia international airport after a flight of almost one hour from Santorini … and ready for a lunch at the place Dirk-NL indicated us!

17041811225810968214988976.jpg

17041811233010968214988985.jpg

That's all folks for this first leg ...

And the following leg, the next day!

Leg 110b completed: LGTS-LUKK

Easter Flight!

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

17041811242410968214988992.jpg

Sunday April 16th, Easter Sunday, it’s 2 PM and we’re ready for this leg leading us to Moldova, a country that I do not know well... All that I know is that Moldova eagerly awaits its integration in EU! At gate T1, we prepare for the flight. This leg will be about 850 km, a rather long flight.

17041811242910968214988993.jpg

Taxiing to runway, an Aegean Airlines A320 takes off. This is flight 540 to Dusseldorf.

17041811243310968214988994.jpg

Arriving close to the holding point at runway 16, a Ryanair Boeing 737 prepares to take off for a short flight to Athens.

17041811243810968214988995.jpg

After a U-turn, we are flying on a due north route at 8,000 feet climbing to 13,000 feet. On our left the city of Kalamaria in the southern suburb of Thessalonica.

17041811244310968214988996.jpg

At 15,000 feet, climbing to FL250, we left behind Thessalonica, the Gulf of Thessalonica and the Aegean Sea and, in the background, Mount Olympus.

17041811244710968214988997.jpg

At our cruise altitude (FL350), as already stated by Dirk-NL, probably when he was flying I the same area, there is still some snow below! We are over the southwest corner of Bulgaria and, below, are the Pirin Mountains, a part of the Balkans Mounts. The mountains range is named after Pirin, the highest god of the Slavic pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning

17041811245210968214989001.jpg

Sofia is on our left, on our right there are some impressive CBs almost towering at our cruise altitude. We fly heading northeast.

17041811245510968214989002.jpg

A few minutes later, we fly from FL350 over the Danube River, Europe’s second-longets river after the Volga. This river is here the border between Bulgaria, on the south bank, and Romania, on the north bank. The city seen is in Romania, it is Turnu Măgurele.

17041811250010968214989003.jpg

From FL350, view of Bucharest in the distance.

17041811240010968214988986.jpg

From FL350, view of Buzău, a city in eastern Romania, located on the south bank of the Buzău River. Since 1831, the city seal harbors a Phoenix, because the city was fully destroyed and rebuilt several times.

17041811240510968214988987.jpg

Maintaining 5,000 feet and heading northeast, we enter the downwind leg of runway 26 approach circuit. In the distance, we see the city of Chisinau, formerly known as Kichinev when, a long time ago, I was a kid. The area is quite rural, viewing all these fields.

17041811240910968214988988.jpg

Taxiing to the gate. We see the passenger terminal with an Austrian bird at the gate.

17041811241310968214988989.jpg

Taxxing to the gate at a remote apron. Yup, guyz, we are obviously in a former soviet airport, some Ilyushin-18s parked…

17041811241710968214988990.jpg

Parked at gate Mike-6 at Chisinau international airport after a one hour and fifteen minutes flight from Thessalonica, crossing two countries: Bulgaria and Romania. Well, we have now a week to spend in Chisnau and Moldova. The airport addon is superb, a great thanks to Aerosoft and Drzewiecki Design to making this fantastic scenery.

17041811242210968214988991.jpg

17041811250310968214989004.jpg

That's all folks.

Have great flights

Philippe

Catching up on reporting earlier flights.

2017-04-13 [111.a]: Santorini [LGSR] - Athen, Greece [LGAV]

After the long meander around Aegean, it was impossible to resist the call of Athens for a unscheduled stop.

Despite lots of sun, to me Santorini seemed desolate.  The view when arriving at the airport, dry and desolate.  The island in the distance, I believe, is Anafi.  According to myth, where the Argonauts found shelter from a storm. An uneventful flight on a nice Spring day over the Cyclades.

Of course we learn (or, at least us formerly learned) about countries such as Greece in grade school.  We may gain an idea that the country is mountainous.  But, it is certainly an experience of a different order to fly over those mountains and see the plains where the cities were founded.

The airport at Athen, Eleftherios Venizelos, does not seem to be designed very differently than any other 2 parellel runway airport.  But, those aircraft which used the northern runway had to make a longer taxi to get to the other side of the airport, where all the action was occurring.2017-4-14_0-43-37-785.thumb.jpg.6716e17b82fa5ce83625d2e0e240b902.jpg

Stopped for a few days to visit the temple of Venus on the Acropolis.2017-4-14_0-52-11-196.thumb.jpg.0c12a0037e1df225c9e20989a2474cbe.jpg

2017-04-18 [111.b]: Athen, Greece [LGAV] - Thessaloniki, Greece [LGTS]

While finishing breakfast in the dining room at the top of the hotel across the street . . . at 07:30 local time, the Athens airport is only just beginning to awaken.2017-4-17_22-1-46-758.thumb.jpg.85fa95893b10e824fefe6cbfe8637095.jpg

I should have enough experience by now, to know that a sleeping airport never sleeps long; and when an airport wakes up, there is a burst of activity.  So, while completing our preparations, the ground channel kept crackling with "request startup," "request pushback."  And, then "request taxi," "request taxi," "request taxi," . . . here is part of the gaggle heading out in front of us.2017-4-17_22-28-53-362.thumb.jpg.01f37f6a1908ea3fdc0f61dc4b1d54cd.jpg

A short flight to Thessaloniki, and a SID that made it almost a straight-in approach.

LGAV 03R.ABLO1E.ABLON UB1 SKP UL617 LEKPO.LEKP2H.VDMY34 LGTS

There was a helicopter chopping around that made me uneasy.  Perhaps it was because we were first directed to park in the military cargo area.  (If there was any aircraft at the airport which clearly did not belong in the military area, ours was it.)  Trying to stay on those narrow taxiways was also interesting.

(Definitely a nice airport and city.  But, together with an Athens start, landing here OOM'ed my system.  After restarting at

Thessaloniki, the memory usage was at first already 3GB [dropped to 2.7].  That's a lot.)

2017-04-18 [112]: Thessaloniki [LGTS] - Chisinau, Moldova [LUKK]

After repositioning and a short stay, it was time to prepare to continue on to Moldavia.  The Air Berlin A321 shown in this picture would later drag his wingtip through our cockpit as he was taxiing out.  Not very polite of him.2017-4-17_23-41-28-556.thumb.jpg.f525b6be156f8bf366baee7f215cb027.jpg

"Follow the leader" . . . . Once again, everyone wanted to leave at the same time.  To avoid confusion, I just waited for them to all move along.2017-4-18_0-8-24-624.thumb.jpg.64c759dc9ca00c1fa030c6ad7a2ac789.jpg

I think this must be the longest flightplan I have ever entered.

After the many short recent flights, this one seemed long, but it was not really longer than some we have made.  Some clouds, some clearing; some land, some water.

And, arriving to find an airport without the modern architecture so common these days.  A more rustic look, though certainly equally interesting.2017-4-18_1-55-57-148.thumb.jpg.7cd6b22141f6e95b0a5a8a02dae50aef.jpg

Hey @Phillippe, along with the IL-18's I think I also saw an AN-72.  But, it appeared to be operational, so maybe it was not there during your visit.

And a view from the control tower walkway, looking past the front of the airport.2017-4-18_1-59-10-380.thumb.jpg.66558a2d612346c5ee8aacf853bfa5df.jpg

(LUKK Chisinau by Drzewiecki Design.  There is a temptation to show many more pictures.  I could go on a length with praise for this airport.  The ambiance of the old and derelict Soviet-era airframes scattered about.  The surrounding landclass work really help to establish the scene of an airport in a mostly rural and agricultural area.)
