Hi guyz, next leg! A very short hop...

Leg 109 completex: LGIR-LGSR

To Santorini

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

17040907492110968214973333.jpg

Saturday April 8th, 2 PM (as usual) and we are taxiing to the active runway at Heraklion airport. The single plane at the passenger apron is an Airbus A320 of the Aegean Airlines which operates the regular flight to Athens at 3:25 PM. This is a beautiful day and this week in Crete was awesome. We particularly enjoyed its 650 miles-long coastline.

17040907492510968214973334.jpg

Over the Bay of Heraklion at 3 400 feet, climbing to 13,000 feet that we will never reach because ATC will ask us to begin our descent when we will be about 12,000 feet! A nice view on the city, the typical mountainous background and the airport we just left. We see quite well the large Pankritio stadium which is close to the beach.

17040907493010968214973335.jpg

At 5,500 feet, less than 5 minutes after takeoff, we fly by Dia Island, an uninhabited island less than 10 miles of Heraklion. The islet looks like a giant lizard with its head pointing to Heraklion. There is a legend that a giant lizard tried to destroy the island of Crete, but Zeus turned it into stone with a thunderbolt, thus creating the island. It is also said that Theseus, after killing the Minotaur, escaped to Dia island.  There is a church on this island, dedicated to Saint Geroges killing the dragon.

17040907493410968214973337.jpg

At 7,000 feet, we cross the Sea of Crete that separates Crete from Thira Island (Santorini). A ferry can be seen, it links Heraklion to Santorini with 3 departures per day.

17040907493710968214973338.jpg

Six minutes later, we have descended to 2,100 feet, maintaining while in the approach circuit to runway 34R. View of Santorini Island, or Thira Island as its official name, on our left.

17040907491010968214973330.jpg

Visual approach to runway 34R at Santorini airport. We fly very close to the high mountains of Mesa Vouno and, behind it, the 567-m high Prophete lias (Profitis Ilias) Mount.

17040907491510968214973331.jpg

Parked at an unknown gate of Santorini airport after a very short 23-min flight from Heraklion. We have a week ahead to explore and enjoy this volcanic island, the remains of a very high stratovolcan that was there until 1620-1627 BC when it exploded, the famous Minoan eruption, one of the largest in the historical times. Last studies have demonstrated that its eruption, qualified of supercolossal by volcanologists, was 4-times more powerful than that of Krakatoa, with a plume of about 22 miles high , ejecting about 100 km3 of materiel and causing a tsunami as high as 500 feet in some area and ‘only’ 110 feet in the other places! Wow! The collapsed volcano is still active and volcanologists have recently demonstrated that there is still a giant magma chamber juts 2 miles under Santorini Island.

17040907492010968214973332.jpg

Strange texture on the ground at this apron ... and no marking???

17040907494010968214973340.jpg

mini_16010501112610968213875515.jpg

That's all folks. have great flight and happy landings.

Philippe

The destination for the current leg I had to choose by the following criteria: 737-600 capable and with add-on scenery that is officially P3Dv3 compatible.

That left me with the hardest approach: Samos:

No immidiate approach pictures, since I was way to concentrated to not mess it up. The vertical profile I nailed perfectly. My final turn towards the greenhouse was too steep so I was in danger of undershooting the runway. I corrected on time, but it probably wasn't very pleasant as a passenger.

That's what I made for myself:

LGKJ    Kastelorizo
LGIR    Nikos Kazantzakis
LGSR    Santorini
LGKO    Ippokratis
LGSM    Aristarchos of Samos
LGMK    Mikonos
LGSK    Alexandros Papadiamandis
LGRX    Araxos AB  (only because of Scenery Solutions' nice and cheap sceneries of Padras and the airport)
LGTS    Makedonia

This list should contain all alternatives as well.

"Around and around and around it goes; Where she stops, nobody knows."

Spent a long day flying around the Aegean Sea.

017-04-10 [110.a]: Heraklion [LGIR] - Kos [LGKO]

LGIR 27.LABU1B.LABUX V57 RDS L995 USINI.USIN2H.VDM14 LGKO

The first trip was not so bad, a little bit longer, more time to plan and prepare.  And it was an overfly STAR, giving even more time.  Here preparing to pass over the runway, and to descend overwater on the other side of the island.
2017-4-10_22-11-36-983.thumb.jpg.85f8ccf25681d50c26e7e227b1735ec7.jpg

I think that airplane needs a new paint job.2017-4-11_0-11-20-333.thumb.jpg.bd60df96b5e0af6c680659bec252e387.jpg

This one 737 sure gets around.  It seems to be at almost ever other stop these days.2017-4-11_0-39-13-833.thumb.jpg.1c563575c5b82ca26fc986bbbfb4d3e0.jpg

Still waiting.2017-4-11_0-41-53-979.thumb.jpg.a3bfe916b57a65349504439ba9906c6a.jpg

- - - - - - - - -

Eventually on to the next stop.  Very short flight, not much time to look around.

2017-04-10 [110.b]: Kos [LGKO] - Samos [LGSM]

LGKO 14.KOPA3B.KOPAR H59 LARKI.LARK2A.VOR09 LGSM

Even one hour before the flight I was not aware of how difficult an approach it is.  But the warning from Farlis clued me in so I checked the documents.  In this case flight preparation was not merely important, but vitally critical.

I still messed up the initial inbound leg, so (like Farlis) I had to make a very sharp turn to get aligned.  And, I imagine some passengers were seeing their breakfast again, albeit in a somewhat post-processed form.

Shock of shocks, the turn turned out.  (I must be grateful for having been granted an A319 for this eastern hemisphere return, instead of an A321.)

Anyway, nobody would believe it, without pictures

2017-04-10 [110.c]: Samos [LGSM] - Mykonos [LGMK]

I had been worried that the shorter runway at Mykonos might be a problem, but we were lightly loaded.  So, after the Samos adventure, Mykonos was a breeze.

LGSM 09.ORMO1D.ORMOS H59 NISOS R32 LETSO.LETS1A.VORZ34 LGMK

The airport did seem almost abandoned on arrival.2017-4-11_2-46-38-148.thumb.jpg.90c41bcade77363618b658eafebf389d.jpg

It did not stay that way for long.  Here we have a rare sight -- there are people still flying Boeing 717s!  (Although, Volotea is starting to replace them.)  This bird came in as I was shutting down.  Shown here leaving during the cockpit preps for my next flight.  He was not on the ground for 30 minutes.  Shortly after than, another one of his buddies dropped in.

2017-4-11_3-4-57-103.thumb.jpg.5415ebc38de33231a61efa8f35cf4401.jpg

As it turns out, Wiki informs us that rapid turn-arounds at Mykonos are normal in the summer season because of the need to keep the apron clear for the high amount of traffic coming and going.

- - - - - - - - -

Soon, we were part of the goings.

2017-04-10 [110.d]: Mykonos [LGMK] - Santorini [LGSR]

LGMK 34.NITS1C.NITSA J62 IRBEG.IRBE1A.VORA34-R LGSR

A simple flight.  An hour or so later, shut down and sheltering in shade under the wing.2017-4-11_4-5-26-969.thumb.jpg.1c798cd189bcfb26e3110029c7610983.jpg

Around 450 NM of flying, and back within 70 NM of the starting place.
