Here we go for a new batch.

Leg: HTKJ to HSSJ, 666 Nm on FL240

Route: HTKJ AVATU KIV SV NADOG HSSJ

Duration: Takeoff: 11:37z - Landing: 14:01z

Aircraft: Majestic Q400 Wideroe livery

Weather: AS16-ASCA historical 1 day ago.

Metar departure: HTKJ 161600Z 10020KT 9999 FEW041CB BKN120 31/11 Q1012 NOSIG

Metar destination: HSSJ 161817Z 00606KT 9999 -RA FEW060 SCT165 29/16 Q1018

2017-2-17_13-13-5-50.jpeg

It was hot, so I needed the APU bleed to keep my 62 waiting passengers cool until the groundcrew loaded the luggage. Takeoff was from RWY09 and probably because of the heat I needed more runway to get airborne then I'm used to. Following the AVAT1A SID I made a 180 to get on course to the first WPT.

2017-2-17_13-45-0-755.jpeg

With the new EZDOK V2 it's just a little more realistic in turns (because pilots keep their head fixed (more or less) on the horizon.

It took a while to get on FL240. Being there with an OAT of -15 degrees we have ICE:

2017-2-17_14-18-29-895.jpeg

About 10 Nm before the KIV WPT clouds are building up (below):

2017-2-17_15-6-28-518.jpeg

...and a few minutes later we were 'in the soup', ICE DETECTION was on most of the flight. Silly idea in central Africa knowing it's very hot down there.

Following the NADO1A STAR we were on final for a RNAV approach for RWY31. More or less an 'over-the-hill-and-dive'-short final. Great fun.

Happy landings,

Dirk

Off to Juba!

Kilimanjaro was cloudy and warm, so quickly climbed through the murk to FL150 on a straight run to Juba.

Along the way I had dials giving me issues: coolant temp was way low but oil temp redlining high. It settled some time after I levelled off but still gave me some worries, watching them closely. Descent and landing over the White Nile into Juba uneventful.

Had some time this weekend so went on from Juba to Khartoum to Jeddah.

7ToHJY1.jpg

I think I traced my temp issues back to some maintenance. Damn these dusty desert surrounds because filters tend to clog up more often. Next to that my hydraulic pump began to wear out after 150hrs of flying, so cooling vents were also not opened/closed enough I guess. So some maintenance has been done and all seems well now.

Regarding the flights: damn it was hot!! 32 degrees is no temperature for a single man cockpit, so with vents full open I opted for flight levels with comfortable temps for me and my engine. Running on thick summer oil for the low levels while cruising in sub zero temperatures at high levels isnt all that great for the Merlin, so FL100 was fine with OAT around 12-15 degrees. I crossed the Red Sea in daylight but when I reached the other side the sun was almost below the horizon, making my landing at Jeddah in the last few rays of daylight. Next stop: Marsa Alam or Sharm el Sheikh (still havent decided).

For one week, I have manage (barely) to keep to the schedule, despite unexpected delays [AI repaints and more repaints].  I even realized as I was putting things into place, that I had even neglected to do the flight plan in advance.

The closest view I ever got of Kilimanjaro.  After Axel's / @FlyingAxx  report about people never seeing the summit, I will be content with this view of the Mawenzi peak just before the departure turn.

2017-2-23_0-12-15-175.jpg

When arriving at Juba, I remembered that no add-on scenery had been loaded.  So, afterwards, I quickly took care of that with an addition from the Sudan division of IVAO.  http://www.ivao-sd.net/index.php/sceneries-afcads/

However, there was still almost nothing there.

Which may not be surprising.  I feel a little uneasy due to my earlier comments about the lack of safety at Socotra and Djibouti.  Those conflicts are in the past and air traffic has resumed.  Fighting in South Sudan, however, is raging now; and many airlines have suspended flights to the city.

'Okay to start engines'

I puzzled a bit between yes or no reduced takeoff power, but given an outside temperature of 36 degrees Celsius and the hills around the airport I expected a very long takeoff run and slow climb, so a normal takeoff was selected. RWY31 is a very long one and now I know why. Since I made flights in Norway just before in nice thick cold air, this was a different story. Really nice that Majestic programmed the performance related to the weather in the flight model. Can't say that of other aircraft builders. OK. After takeoff I followed the LAGP1B SID. Usually I use a 185 KIAS climb as long as the VS is >1000 ft/min. Ater that, usually around FL190 I have to lower the speed. In this heat that happened around FL160 and since my minumum climb speed is 160 KIAS, the last 1000 feet to FL230 I only had 600 ft./min. Not what I'm used to. But that is the charm of this World Tour. You experience situations you never had before.

The route was a bit boaring because ORBX does not expect us to fly in Africa I guess.

2017-2-24_15-56-57-669.jpeg

And again there was ICE on FL230:

2017-2-24_15-45-34-51.jpeg

I prepared myself for a BST1 STAR to an ILS approach on RWY36.

2017-2-24_17-21-28-91.jpeg

A very nice 'greaser' was my share and I taxied in to park at gate G3,

Happy landings,

Dirk

Hi guyz,

Back to the Tour after long 'hollidays'.

Leg 102 completed

HTKJ-HSSJ

To South Sudan

Flight route. Green, planned; Red, actual.

17030109573210968214885507.jpg

Saturday February 25th, at gate 5 of a cloudy Kilimanjaro international airport. It’s 2 PM and we’re ready for this new batch of flights to Split.

17030109573610968214885508.jpg

At some 14,000 feet, climbing to FL200, we fly close to the nice snow-capped Mount Kibo, the highest point of the Kilimanjaro complex. We are heading due north.

17030109574010968214885509.jpg

Twenty-two minutes later, a sight on Nairobi and its airport from our cruise altitude (FL360).

17030109574610968214885510.jpg

We cross the Equator (again!) at FL360, we’re back in the Northern hemisphere. Under clouds, we see Entebbe and its airport with the curved Waiya Bay that wraps around Entebbe Peninsula.

17030109575210968214885511.jpg

A last sight at Lake Victoria. With a surface area of approximately 68,800 km2, Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake by area, the world's largest tropical lake.

17030109575610968214885512.jpg

Five minutes later, we see on our right Lake Kyoga through which the Victoria Nile flows from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert (that was out of sight behind clouds on our left). This is a large shallow lake (average depth of about 4 m only).

17030109580010968214885513.jpg

We fly over the White Nile flowing through narrow Gorges from Lake Kyoga to Lake Albert in a series of powerful waterfalls sometimes juts 10 m in width. Ernest Hemingway crashed a plane in this area in 1954.

17030109572010968214885504.jpg

Visual finale for runway 13 at Juba airport. The city is along the White Nile River that can be seen in the distance. The pyramidal lone hill of Jabal Luliri  (560 m) can be seen on the right.

17030109572610968214885505.jpg

Parked at parking 1, Juba international airport, after a long flight of about 1h40min from Kilimanjaro. It’s a hot 36°C outside and a clear blue sky and we’ve got a full evening and night before leaving for Khartoum tomorrow. A Sudanese bird is parked at its gate.

17030109573010968214885506.jpg

Hi guyz,

The following flight...

Leg 103 completed

HSSJ-HSSS

To Khartoum

Flight route. Green, planned. Red, actual.

17030110055910968214885519.jpg

Sunday February 26th, 2 PM, departing runway 13. View of Juba and the White Nile.

17030110060510968214885520.jpg

Heading north at our cruise altitude (FL350). The White Nile is divided in several branches and in small lakes on this part of its course.

17030110061010968214885521.jpg

View of Malakal and its airport from FL350 on the banks of the White Nile. This South-Sudanese large city is close to both Ethiopia and Sudan.

17030110061710968214885522.jpg

After the descent from teh cruise altitude, we are maintaining 4 000 feet in the base leg for runway 36 at Khartoum that can be seen in the distance at some 20 nm. The road under us is the one that links Khartoum to South Sudan.

17030110054510968214885516.jpg

Finale for runway 36. This ILS approach makes us fly over the city of Khartoum.

17030110055310968214885517.jpg

Parked at gate 29 of Khartoum international airport after a flight of slightly more than 1 h 30 from Juba. The airport is quite busy, a nice change from the previous airports we flew in. A surprising sight is that Ukrainian An-72 of the Antonov Airlines.

17030110055710968214885518.jpg

Khartoum, the city of Gordon Pasha,

Charles Gordon (1833-1885) last stand at Khartoum.

There is a nice scenery for HSSS / Khartoum at IVAO Sudan

http://www.ivao-sd.net/index.php/sceneries-afcads/

~ ~ ~

Unfortunately, I discovered that Aerosoft does not have Tel Aviv / Ben Gurion.

http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/119971-ben-gurion/&do=findComment&comment=800941 )

There is a version at IVAO Israel, however the default terminal covers up the nice new one and terminal and other objects are out of place, littering the runways/taxiways and obstructing flight.

https://ivao.org.il/pilots/sceneries?showall=1

I made a small and simple file to clean up that mess (attached).

(There is also a payware version by FSADDON at Simmarket.)

Although I looked at both of these freeware airports, I did not examine them with satellite photos or compare the approaches to the charts.  So, there is no vouching for their accuracy.

I am embarrassed to confess that I took only a very brief glimpse of that HSSS (seeing many building models from the Sketchup 3D Warehouse).   However, I overlooked the default buildings that remain out of place and the missing texture for the Sudan Airways service truck.

I only discovered this after I arrived, and it is now past midnight (my time), so corrections must wait for a day or two.

Sorry for not seeing this and correcting it earlier.

Hi guys,

Leg 105 OEJN-HESH and 106 HESH-HECA are finished.

A bit of boring flights because of the travel distance above the desert sands, when I approach Cairo things where looking more interesting.

So just some pictures from the approach to Cairo.
