Sorry Tobus. We arrived at KELP with leg 49. So the next set should start with 50 I presume. I think this is a tipical 'Murphey's Law' situation. :)

Maybe better to delete the post and start a new one with the correct numbers. Otherwise we have to carry this anomality all the way to Inuit country.

Thunder Horse is back in business!

That trip in South America did her in. A thorough check revealed worn out brake pads on both main wheels, starter motor replacement needed, oil filter replacement needed, generator replacement, battery replacement. The Mighty Packard Merlin had no issues though, luckily. So after a day or so in the shop, we went on our way again on a sunny flight to KGCN. I'll take a nice tour of the Grand Canyon on my way to San Fransisco on the next flight. This one was nice and sunny, just putting her on high cruise not worried about the fuel on this relatively short leg. Scooting on at 250KIAS with a 30kt tailwind made it only 1h20m.

Glad to be back!

Hi Patrick (Pasterke),

take care that you, instead of being first at Eareckson Air Station, don't end up in jail. :D

I guess the local police department caught an eye on the plane flying at low altitude down the Strip. You better leave the state of Nevada immediately.:)

If I still see your bird on the apron when I will be arriving at KLAS I will check with the local police department.;)

Wish you a happy start from Las Vegas.

Next morning I hired a Cessna to see how grand that canyon really is...

Hmm, quite impressive really, even in default FS world :)

Just for the hell of it I'll fly to Las Vegas next and go sight seeing around the Hoover Dam.

Hi Gernot,

Felt like going crazy yesterday and did a "Microsoft Flight game" - trip to play around and take some screenshots other than departure and arriving shots. :hahaha_s:

felt good back to reality now :cheers_s:

Hello captainz

Here is the report on the Leg 50 just finished.

Leg 50 completed: KELP-KGCN

To the Colorado

Saturday January 23rd, 3 PM, at parking 29, El Paso International airport. It’s time to resume the World Tour flights. We spent these two weeks in El Paso, mostly visiting the regions surrounding the city, taking the Wyler Aerial Tramway up to the summits of the Franklin Mountains for some hiking. We also crossed the border on the Bridge of the Americas to go visit Ciudad Juarez. Meanwhile, for several days, we had our hub at the Los Bandidos of Carlos & Mickey’s, the best restaurant for Mexican food in the city and for their extraordinary Margaritas.

16012510150510968213925035.jpg

Climbing out of El Paso, passing 17,000 feet for FL200 on a west route to join the planned route to KGCN. We see the two big airfields that are side by side, the Biggs Army Airfield (KBIF) north of the KELP airport.

16012510150810968213925036.jpg

Passing FL250, climbing to FL280 just five minutes after takeoff, we are flying over the New Mexico city of Las Cruces following a north-west route almost direct to KGCN. The city is bordered by the Rio Grande. Las Cruces is the headquarters for Virgin Galactic, the world's first company to offer sub-orbital spaceflights.

16012510151310968213925037.jpg

Five minutes after we reached our cruise altitude (FL360). Back us on our left lies the White Sands Missile Range, with its 8,300 km2 it’s the largest military installation in the US. We see the valley of the Rio Grande that runs due north here between the White Sands on right and the Gila National Forest on left. At the extremity of the farther of the two Reservoirs lying on Rio Grande is the spa city of T-O-C (Truth Or Consequences) named after the radio game show of the 50s.

16012510151610968213925038.jpg

Still at FL360, we are heading northwest over the well-named (in this season) White Mountains that progressively raise until the Colorado plateau that can be seen in the distance. In front of us, lies the large wilderness of Fort Apache Indian Reservation.

16012510144410968213925027.jpg

At 19,800 feet, descending to 14,000 feet, we fly over a snow-covered Flagstaff with a nice view of the Flagstaff-Pulliam airport (KFLG). We follow a due west route.

16012510144910968213925030.jpg

At 25 miles south of KGCN, we pass 9,000 feet, descending to 8,200 feet, we are entering in the base leg approach for RWY 03. Behind us, we can see the Humphreys Peak (3,852 m), the highest point in Arizona.

16012510145310968213925031.jpg

On a long finale for RWY 03, we can see the edge of the Grand Canyon nature’s wonder.

16012510145610968213925032.jpg

What a line of vintage Boeing 727s at KGCN!

16012510145910968213925033.jpg

Parked at ramp parking 15 at KGCN after a very pleasant flight from El Paso of just a bit more than one hour. We are parked right in front of the Grand Canyon airport main terminal. It’s 4:30 PM but, outside the plane, it’s a chilly -3°C with a clear blue sky.

Leg 50: KELP to KGCN on Monday, Jan. 25th.

I departed from RWY04 14:552z following the JCOXX1 SID for this 428 Nm flight on 16,000 feet.

I followed the BISOP transition for the ILS approach of RWY03:

... and landed 16:51z. A long taxi to my parking position:

Maybe I make a short hop to KLAS later this week. I've been there before so no need to go there and loose myself in the casino's.

;-)

Hi guys just finished my leg 51 flight from EL paso to Grand Canyon( previous flight stories should be coming soon). This was by far the most stressful leg i had so far on this trip you will see why.

So here we are at El paso. Today we are getting 5.2 tons of fuel, 102 passengers and 2 tons of cargo making a takeoff weight around 58 tons.

Rt6a3AC.jpg?1

Our taxi to runway was a little bit long as we had to taxi to runway 04 for departure. Here we are lined up 50% N1 engines stable and we advance the throttles to flex.

iQkqpYE.jpg?1

As i was watching rotation to take a picture i noticed that the rotation was too long. Went back to the flight deck view and had to set power to TOGA then the rotation slowly started with 15 degrees of pitch( I think we had a tailstrike at this moment)

kAya2xf.jpg?1

Even with TOGA it doesnt want to climb. Setting Flaps 2 to help the A319 to climb then it looks like it start´s to climb. Positive rate Gear up and engines doing an amazing sound (blue sky star simulations sound pack)

3ZvaieA.jpg?1

Affter setting Flaps two at around 5000FT the aircraft stopped to climb again. We tried to put Flaps 3 but it didnt climb at this moment to prevent a crash i had to increase fsx speed to around 160KTS to be able to climb. Now at 7000 feet we still climb with Toga (why you may ask)? We tried to put thrust climb t doesnt climb and speed starts to reduce, same with MCT, retraction of flaps even with TOGA doesnt help. Only way to climb was Toga + flaps 1

5I2D7Lv.jpg?1

Now as we are kind of stable climbing it is time for an exterior shot.

TcrPczS.jpg?1

As we are unable to climb using normal thrust we decide to level off at around FL200 making this our cruise altitude.

F1ueR65.jpg?1

Of course a full toga climb down to FL200 burned us a lot of fuel. So he had to try to reach a higher flight level. We kept trying using thrust climb and if speed was reduced we hited Toga. In the end at some point thrust climb was able to get us to 30000FT

0pQaYmE.jpg?1

Now at flight level 300 and looking at MCDU predictions we start to get worried. MCDU says we can get to Grand canyon with 0.4 tons on board. As it doesnt have wind in consideration we decide to think. In the end we decided to go for grand canyon but use runway 03 for arrival and do a full descent down to ILS G/S altitude( so that Thrust idle can be kept during almost all descend) just in precaution we decided to arrive all traffic on the viciniy of our situation and go squawk 7700( vatsim)

CfQguDZ.jpg?1

We start our descend and hope for the best 40nm to localizer waypoint and 680 kilograms on board

NmB1xLc.jpg?1

Grand canyon in sight that is a good sign.

rzYlBgk.jpg?1

And we managed to get to the localizer and to the glide slope. Trusting on A/P now as we captured the glide gear is coming down and we go straight from flaps 1 to flaps 3

soycZd4.jpg?1

Decided to go manual. Approach is stable and lined on runway and good on vertical path

jhQ2s33.jpg?1

Touchdown with a -151fpm rate. Lined up on centerline using Idle reversers and autobrake medium

svj2uRx.jpg?1

Used single engine taxi to get to parking and we made it! Passengers are now deboarding and we can call the maintenance guys to check what was wrong.

mREL9DQ.jpg?1

As the "maintenance guys" arrive into the flight deck they start searching for "clues" and they notice a brakes hot indication

z5zhuLf.jpg?1

And on fuel page this can be found.

zcoC3JU.jpg?1

So far nothing has been found to be the cause of the issue( iguess low and negative temperatures at el paso -4ºC/-7ºC Dew point and not using the anti ice. Only used turned it on when we were unable to climb) if you can guess based on the pictures i would be apreciated to prevent this to happen on future legs. If you want the flight plan with weights and stuff i can post it here. (Now looking at another topic with this problem and a hifi forum looks like it is the active sky next icing simulation)

Flight information:

Date: 27th of January of 2016

Aircraft: A319-115 F-WTBJ

Route: GREBE J86 INW DCT FLG V291 KACEE V257 GCN

Dep runway: 04

Arrival runway: 03

Helo guyz!

tsssssssssssss Patrick, you're a bad boy ... always running far ahead alone !!

Well, BrunoPt99, it's always the problem with these pannels with so much numeric gauges ... :D ... let's go back to the good old analogic gauges and fly an oldtimer bizjet ... well, like a Learjet no?

At least, if somethign goes wrong, you cannot blame the computer since there is NO computer .. well to say so...

Thanx WFX478, it's always a pleasure to see the big old Connie.
